MPAA Lobbying for Home Theater Regulations
By Scott Small
Los Angeles , CA - The MPAA is lobbying congress to push through a new bill that would make unauthorized home theaters illegal. The group feels that all theaters should be sanctioned, whether they be commercial settings or at home.
MPAA head Dan Glickman says this needs to be regulated before things start getting too far out of control, "We didn't act early enough with the online sharing of our copyrighted content. This time we're not making the same mistake. We have a right to know what's showing in a theater."
The bill would require that any hardware manufactured in the future contain technology that tells the MPAA directly of what is being shown and specific details on the audience. The data would be gathered using various motion sensors and biometric technology.
The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29" with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon. Anyone with a home theater would need to pay a $50 registration fee with the MPAA or face fines up to $500,000 per movie shown.
"Just because you buy a DVD to watch at home doesn't give you the right to invite friends over to watch it too. That's a violation of copyright and denies us the revenue that would be generated from DVD sales to your friends," said Glickman. "Ideally we expect each viewer to have their own copy of the DVD, but we realize that isn't always feasible. The registration fee is a fair compromise.
The bill also stipulates that any existing home theaters be retrofitted with the technology or else the owner is responsible for directly informing the MPAA and receiving approval before each viewing.
God Bless America.....?

That's... just... unbe-f***ing-lievable!!!!
Is it really a violation of copyright to show your DVD movies to a friend? I know it's a violation to lend them to a friend, but I thought you could view them together, as long as admission was not charged.
The term "home theater" was coined because it gives you a theater quality experience at home, not because it is actually equivalent to a movie theater.
If you're not allowed to invite friends over to watch a DVD movie, then what about family members living in the same house? Are they allowed to watch with you, or should they be purchasing a copy as well? After all the MPAA claims that each viewer should have their own copy of the DVD.
After reading this article, I didn't feel like buying any MPAA movies. I just don't like the way of doing business the article is talking about.

Is the "N-word" what I think it is? Because as offensive as it may be, they shouldn't ban the word. Although you should never use it anyway.

I know, it's not that I want to use the word or anything, it's a terrible word and very offensive, but it's the principle of the thing. Banning the use of the word. We'll be no better than Socialist Germany :( Banning the use of the Swastika and Gears of War...Just because they offend people

Isn't it the Democrats that want to push for "Happy Holidays" even though over half the US population is christian?
---
Home theater my butt. What are they gonna do even a person buys 1 sofa one day, then a big plasma tv another day and perhaps a few weeks later a sound system. They can't say it's to make a "home theater"; they just purchased a series of EEEEVIL things that combined together they.. are illegal???
Sometimes I will never understand America. I doubt the bill will pass though considering it's not in the interest of tv companies of losing money cuse of the greed of some idiots. So I can't watch a DVD with a friend at home??!!! Come on!
I beat your booty out of my home you doofus.
Even if this "law" were passed, it wouldn't be possible to enforce it. TV companies would change the name of "home theater" to the designated eeeevil product to something else like "home entertainment system" or something.
I would like them to define "comfortable chair".

That's... just... unbe-f***ing-lievable!!!!
Even as outrageous as it sounds, with permitted encraochments on property rights and many folks in control of the patent office ignoring some needed copyright reform, I can believe that they're pushing for it and, even though I hate scaremongering and conspiracy theories, there is a chance this might pass, though I can't really say when.
We'll be no better than Socialist Germany Banning the use of the Swastika and Gears of War...Just because they offend people
They're not banned because of the same reason; they're banned because of very different reasons.
(Oh, BTW - Germany's not controlled by the Socialists anymore, they're split between the CDU and SDP)

I'm sure if the MPAA had their way, we'd be buying dvds, then paying a fee everytime we watch them. Oh and we'd have unskippable trailers/previews at beginning of each one.
