View Full Version : Offical Phantasy Star Universe thread!

The Japanese version is scheduled for February 2006. It was originally supposed to be December, and the US version was for February, but oh well. It'll be worth the wait. This is probably my most anticipated game, ever. I logged well over 1000 hours with Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and Gamecube (and yes, I had a life...I've been playing since 2000). Any fellow warriors on here that I can look forward to fighting with online once the game is out?

Ah you pansies =P One last bump before I let this thread go. I figured this game would be more popular here.

According to rumor, but for now it's only confirmed for PC and PS2. That'd be pretty sweet if they could all play with each other.

I've been wanting a good online rpg game, I got interested in PSO kind of too late to be able to really try it out (at least the online part).
Although I am not sure I like the idea of them saving characters server side since if you dont have a subscription for X days your char is deleted, the same B.S. you face in mmos. But still something I might get.

most mmos keep you character for about six months after you have cancelled your subscribtion. and the only character sega will be saving is the online character. unlike the other versions, psu will have an entirly seperate offline mode. so the character will be saved on your memory card/hard drive.

I'm assuming there will be an online fee like the last one?
Siendra

Well, yeah. Only it will make sense this time, as they will be running multiple 150+ player games and 1000+ player events.

I know, but thats not what I meant.
It has a full offline standalone RPG where you play a pre-existing char.
Then it has an online mode where you make your own custom character. Things I've looked up say things like no subscription for 80 days or so and that char is gone. I would prefer it be kept client side is all, where even if I dont play for a year I would still have my character. But I can see why they don't do that, but I think they should keep characters alive for 1 year before deletion, I know an mmo that basically never deletes the chars, they should all do that, I seriously doubt it costs them anything to keep those characters on.

Please, go play PSO online right now. See all the hacking? That's why you don't store characters client side.
Seriously, if I see one more person with an unsealed J-sword, I will kill something.

I'll probably get this for the offline part.

I admit that my character was far from legit-at least, later on. It's boring when everyone is completely destroying the monsters and you're the weakest one on the whole ship. I would FAR prefer it if everyone was legit, though, which is why I'm looking forward to Phantasy Star Universe. But back on the Dreamcast, where players were killing others in the lobbies, erasing others' characters, and stealing weapons, you pretty much HAD to use Gameshark to enjoy yourself (since it had anti player-kill codes and the like).

The Japanese version is scheduled for February 2006.
Heh, how wrong I was.
Are you going to get it for PC, PS2, or 360 now?
Siendra
June 2nd, 2006, 11:58 PM
Depends. My PC does stand a chance of being more capable then a 360 due to user created quests and what not. However, the control advantage goes to the 360 (Unless the 360 controler will work without any of the usual hiccups, in which case my PC wins regardless.).

June 3rd, 2006, 07:37 PM
PSO was on the first XBOX so its not surprising if this one's gonna be on the 360, cant say I care much for that system though. I had it for gamecube and I've never played online lol. I might do PSU online if i get around to it, but PSO just playing/competing with friends (getting levels and rare items) was really fun and we are all looking forward to this one (PS2 version).
Reidar.

You do know that PSU has no offline-multiplayer, however, right?
Shanks
June 4th, 2006, 03:26 PM

I checked Game Crazy today, and they're not getting it until the 27th. I'm just going to purchase it on the weekend. They had Phantasy Star Online right on its release date six years ago. Those pansies have gotten soft.
Have you played online yet? How is the single-player, in comparison? Is Ethan a wuss?
Warabit
October 25th, 2006, 08:54 PM
all I played was online, havent even tried offline yet. Its missing some things which im sure they will add within the month(rares, expert classes, and some other things) the lobys are more like towns now. And there arent rooms, just missions you go on. And there are 3 planets and the spaceship, each with different missions.

I got it today.
I tried to play story mode. I really did. Ethan is one of the worst characters I've ever had the mispleasure of playing as. He's whiny and annoying enough to melt IQ levels, yet competent enough in hand to hand combat so that you can't get the satisfaction of outright despising him. Bah.
Online is awesome, but I'm still green. I'm level 4.

Boy that was a sloppy thread merge. I must alarm everyone that PSU is now out on all major platforms (PS2, PC, and 360, PC and PS2 share a server, but 360 gets to hang with Japan).

Nope, offline is a story mode now, so you're stuck playing as Ethan Waber. They didn't make it so you could bring Ethan online, because a few hundred people named Ethan Waber would be pretty awkward.
There's an "extra mode" where you can apparenlty create a character, and play the online game offline, but who'd want to do that?

Well the "dragon bug" is basically abandoning the Plains Overlord Mission as soon as you get your EXP and items from DE Ragan. That was you can fight him without doing the first mission over again. It'll warp you back to the previous lobby but you'll still get credit for the mission.

There is absolutly no reason to do that mission unless your marginally retarded or if your trying to synthesis the De ragon figure.
Sleeping warriors gives twice as much money and experience.
Also from doing the sleeping warriors mission about 400 times its finally paid off when I killed the final boss I got a level 11 long sword the same as what the boss uses. :$%&#!: :ssj: :$%&#!:

Well, both my characters are around level 10, I can handle Sleeping Warriors and De Ragan around this point.
There's several things I've noted. Like harassing people around the Unsafe Passage entrance in Universe 1 is gut busting funny. Especially when there's a "woman" who has a bunch of INTERNET BODY GAURDS "protecting them."
Second of all, I wish there were some missions that weren't based in units of 5. I notice the mission level rate goes from 1 to 5 to 10 to 15 etc. etc. etc., I'd like to see some tweener missions, like Level Seven missions.

I've logged that much time on one character. level 20/4 Hunter, and I'm tired of doing the same runs again and again. I'm also not liking that the crazy level 50 players keep saying "For gods sake, I have the exact same equipment as players 20 levels lower because there's nothing after that...."
I paid $50 for the game, and then another $12 to get online for 45 days. I would assume after paying $62, I'd get something that could keep me busy for longer before I'm left feeling ripped off.

For one I am expensive and no level 20 could have nearly as much money as me. second of all A and B rank missions drop completly different things and if you compare what rare in a C rank mission to and A rank you would see that.

You can switch to that class from any class you want, as long as you meet the class point requirements. In the case of Fortefighter, you must be a level 10 Hunter.

Well they opened Moatobb, and it's pretty disapointing because the monsters are just re-skins of the monsters we've been fighting in Parum and Neudiaz, and they have a different element (Fire breath instead of ice attacks). Of course that was last update, this update is different. Although the updates seem to be pretty hefty, they're taking way to long to put 'em up and the game still feels kind of empty.
Honestly, I think the game isn't very good, I really liked it for a little while, but now I can hardly sit through a single mission on it. I cancled my account and got FFXI and WoW instead.

FFXI and WoW? Good luck with that, sir!
To get anywhere in FFXI, it's going to suck up any and all free time you have.
WoW can be pretty laid back though. In the end you'll get to the point where it's the same problem you have with PSO, running the same thing over and over again. Except you'll probably spend 4 hours with your guild progressing to a certain point, calling it a night, and then doing more of it the next day, and the next day, etc. All in 4-5 different places! Woo!

True but it is much more rewarding and engaging. I played it for over 2 years on and off. And it remains one of my favorite games.
I don't regret the time I spent with the game, and it definitely has a spot as one of my favorite MMO experiences. However, so much has changed since the game first launched. It's nothing what it used to be, and steadily falling further and further. It had it's time, and that time is over, unless you're already 75 with the jobs you want, or have a guaranteed static to level new jobs with.
FFXI has been the only MMO I've played, in a long list of MMOs, that I could log in to and accomplish absolutely nothing that I wanted to accomplish for the day. I've come to respect my time more. :p
WoW is great for pickup and play. If I want to do something within reason on WoW, all I have to do is log in and go. If I want to make money, I don't have to out-camp RMT. If I want to kill people, I don't have to wait for a battleground schedule, or try to form a group of pvp people to bring to a diorama. If I want to level a new character, I don't have to find 4 other people to do it with.
EQ I spent the longest time with. That was also a game where I wasn't almost absolutely restricted to grouping. While it does have more competitive camping for items and money, it was no where near as bad as FFXI. EQ had more common courtesy. Named mobs were first come, first serve, or on a list. Every server had a guild rotation for what would be the equivalent of HNM.
The largest downside of EQ was the simplicity of the combat. Not that playing a Rogue in WoW is rocket science, or anywhere near the amount of micromanagement of playing a Ninja, but the ONLY thing I did during combat as a monk in EQ was spam one key. Flying Kick. Spam flying kick until the mob died. Pull another mob by running into it, FD if I get an add, return to group/safe solo spot, spam Flying Kick.
FFXI was great when you were in a group, and a waste of money outside one. It's a pain to actually manage a static, something I was only able to accomplish on my first main job, dragoon, from like 40-60.

I have to agree with you there, you had to commit your life and soul to progress. Honestly My main job (BLM) I only got up to 42 or something like that. But I lvled a bunch of other jobs too somewhat. PLD35, PUP28ish, and so on. It was alot of fun, but the higher level you get the harder it is to fint partys, thats what take forever. Finding a decent party, and actually leveling with it.
Good times in dunes, but man I hated it there. lol

Like i said, I started playing In september. And yes, it is great pick up and play, like PSU. But WoW's world seems way more full in comparison. And it costs the same. It's hard to describe but PSU just feels like a upscaled PSO mod. Where as WoW feels more like some epic tale, with your character as the protagonist.
Michael

Games like PSO are amazing for filler games. I can't stand to honestly play them as much as I do "true" MMOs, but I can always fall back on them to entertain me when I'm bored of the game I am playing.

I gladly would if my account were active, but it's not. I played for a week back in September, then quit again. I only really activated it then because I hate the idea of losing everything I've accomplished in the game due to an inactivity purge. Then again, I hate the idea of wanting to play the game again. It's a serious dilemma!

PSO had item collection going for it, though. From the get go, there were thousands of items in PSO. And some really awesome rare items. And then Ep. 2 added some neat team based mechanics.
PSU is like the basic gameplay of PSO, with a new engine, and none of the stuff that made PSO addicting as sin.

Like Siendra said, the item collecting was downright addicting. And there were some awesome unique looking rares, demoliton comet, or the double cannon, the choa on a stick, umbrella, hildebear/hildeblu cane, L&K14 Combat, Rianov, Yasminkov , chain sawd...

It's also amusing how you paraphrase "issues", as if you're isolating the term with ridicule in itself from the actual concept behind the word. The Million Dollar Prons

P.S. Prons, FFXI is lamer then PSU.
Let's run it down:
FFXI is bigger.
FFXI updates more often.
FFXI has actual party communication.
FFXI has more interesting jobs.
FFXI has funner skills and combat that actually seems involved.
FFXI has quests and missions.
FFXI has PvP and end game content.
FFXI has no De Ragan.
FFXI has more population, by the time I stopped playing PSU there was a drastic drop in online players that I noticed.
FFXI updates happen world wide, America is not four months behind Japan.
FFXI actually has more interesting party roles than "the guy who hits the monster and the guy who heals people."
PSU does have some advantages over FFXI, it's extremely easy to get into a party (although the partying isn't nearly as interactive), combat is very easy (though FFXI's combat is better because the skills make it more interesting), and it's probably the least demanding MMO I've ever seen.
Did I mention after the 50th time De Ragan gets really boring? Even when they added that entire new planet it still seemed like I was fighting De Ragan a lot.
I didn't want to be one of those people you see on the official PSU forum all the time talking about how much the game sucks, and how they're canceling their account, but damn the game sure is disapointing and has a lot of problems.
Seriously, if the levels are going to be ALL INSTANCED there is absolutely no reason not to have lots of missions, and then they already have an expansion pack announced already?! They failed at releasing a complete game and now they're failing so much they're releasing an expansion pack that probably also will have way too little content.
Maybe it'd be good if they fixed the gameplay, made it so all the monsters aren't just reskins of eachother, added more levels, and well, changed everything. At least the character customization was top notch

I stated that Sega has acknowledged these issues, and then provided a link to allegations of Xbox Live fraud, with no implied correlation whatsoever. You see, I assumed it was common sense for one to conclude from 172 posts of complaints in a topic idential to one on PSU's official boards (http://boards2.sega.com/psu_board/viewtopic.php?t=13236&highlight=cheaters ) that, at the very least, there is an issue at hand (which you did not do, but instead, outright stated that all aforementioned problems have been corrected), and that you simply wanted reference of a convincing quantity, not proof behind them. 1. 360 players seem to enjoy their PSU more than PC/PS2 players, but that's due mainly to a difference in security (if you can sift through the fanboys/girls that can't see logic beyond the tip of their noses). The safety of hacking on the 360 is, however, in question... in contrast, the hacking is confirmed on the PC/PS2 servers, but beyond meseta duping, stolen room decorations, and PM zeroing, there's nothing dangerous that could technically happen to your character (meaning no one has lost levels or had their character tampered with).

It's decent. I'm thinking about quitting, however. I like the game very much, but $10.00 a month is hard to accept with lag and glitches.

I believe there are only two S rank weapons so far. That would the Crea Doubles and the Halarod.

I'd say there is about 50% more people on than when first released and The S ranks are pretty challenging.

Are you on the 360? 'Cause Universes 1-7 were full in the PC version when the game was released. And 8-17 had at least two full stars each. When I quite a month ago, Universe 1 was full, universe 2 was half full, and none of the others had any people in them.
The Ult. Otaku
January 29th, 2007, 05:30 AM
Well thats because of all the crap going on in those servers 360 is up and running. especially with the demo that was released.

What crap? I highly doubt 75% of the population left because of a 1/1000000 chance they could get their **** stolen. The game is just ridiculously flawed.

To understand just how messed up the PC and PS2 versions are, look up PSU on Ebay. $5 for 10 million meseta equals broken.

First I have to ask if you ever even played the original PSO back in the day. Second, if you didn't then what made you decide to even buy the game?

Heck yeah, I spent countless hours with the Original PSO. And then even more countless hours on the GC version. I love PSO. Absolutely Love it. PSU on the other hand... not impressed. Guess I was just expecting a little more... You know, at least a little less hacking and duping as DCPSO? Sega just disappointed me. I used to love playing and finding rares and everything. I dont like the whole "rare mats" stuff. I want to kill a boss a bunch of times in hopes of it dropping something cool. Not some rare mats to make a statue.
And just a small gripe. what ever happened to vehicles and such sega talked about? I always envisioned an overworld like in other MMOs where you used vehicles to get around. Had me really hyped for PSU. Now several month later there are a couple dinky rare weapon drops thats I've heard of. Peoples accounts getting ripped off. Duping. ugh. No thanks sega, keep your game I'll look elsewhere.

Yeah, I definitely understand what you are saying. I too wish the game had an overworld where you actually had to move to the next destination. Although I personally don't mind the synthesis aspect, I do agree with you that this game just doesn't fee like Phantasy Star should. I am still playing none the less. But hey, when Halo 3 drops, goodbye PSU.
