So I was watching Gundam X the other day and in episode ten the MS Bertigo made its first appearance, utilizing remote-controlled bits in the Earths atmosphere. I always had the impression that bits/funnels only had the propulsion capabilities to function in the null-gravity of space, which is why at the end of Gundam SEED Destiny the Legend Gundam with its funnel-like DRAGOON system only used them (i.e. detached them from the MS hull) when they moved the action into space. Is there evidence from the other Gundam series' to support the use of bits/funnels/fin funnels in the atmosphere? If so please state the series and MS. I have never seen the end of Z or any of ZZ, so does the Quebely, for instance, ever use its bits in earths atmosphere, or is the Bertigos use of bits in X a fluke?

Actually the Gundam Rose from G Gundam uses its rose bits on earth all the time. There has been a few other cases but I cant think of them off the top of my head right now.

In ZZ, Puru Tsu used them inside on the surface of a colony.
While not exactly Earth, it was Earthlike conditions.

Piloting a Qubeley Mark II? (I haven't seen ZZ, know anywhere good I could download it for free?)

Haman used funnels in a colony:

Can't really see them but funnels were used.

"Funnels:
This psycommu-controlled remote weapon is a successor to the bits used by the mobile armor MAN-08 Elmeth. The first machine equipped with funnels is the AMX-004 Qubeley, developed by renegade Principality of Zeon soldiers at the asteroid base Axis. Unlike the Elmeth's massive bits, which were powered by built-in thermonuclear reactors, the Qubeley's funnels are tiny devices whose beam guns run on compact E-CAPs. The name "funnel" is derived from the conical shape of these weapons.

Thanks to their smaller size, funnels are hard to spot or shoot down, but their limited operating time means that they must continually return to the mobile suit to replenish their propellant supply and recharge their E-CAPs. As research continues, new types of funnel appear, like the oversized devices used by the NZ-333 Alpha Azieru and the unique fin funnels of the RX-93 Nu Gundam. [Char's Counterattack]"

"Psycommu System:
During the One Year War, the researchers of the Flanagan Institute discover that Newtypes emit powerful thoughtwaves - similar to regular brainwaves, but not electrical in nature - which they call psycho-waves. The Flanagan Institute goes on to develop a mind-machine interface called the psycommu (psycho-communicator) system, which receives these thoughtwaves and translates them into computer commands. Using this interface a Newtype pilot can direct remote weapons, and operate huge mobile armors, by thought alone.

After the One Year War, both the Earth Federation Forces and renegade Principality of Zeon soldiers continue the Flanagan Institute's research. The Principality forces based at the asteroid Axis succeed in miniaturizing the psycommu system, so that it can be installed in regular-sized mobile suits like the AMX-004 Qubeley. The Federation Forces, meanwhile, concentrate on developing artificially enhanced cyber-Newtypes to operate their psycommu weapons."

Funnels arn't limited to space, they are controlled with the mind.

Funnels arn't limited to space, they are controlled with the mind.

That (and all that copypasta,) are irrelevant to the topic. Funnels are not remotely aerodynamic, hence the questioning of their usefulness in the hold of gravity. They're not pyschichally moved around by telekinesis, they burn fuel to generate thrust to move.

Oh yeah, that whole 'b'/'v' thing is as confusing as the 'l'/'r' thing tends to be (e.g. Neo Lornoke/Roanoke)
