Trailer is up (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/trailer1/large.html), based off of Frank Miller's retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae and it looks to be very good. In between this Apacalypto it should be a very good winter and spring movie season.

The movie trailer looks awesome.
Casting Gerard Butler as the Spartan King was definitely a good choice; I think it will work in the movie's favor.
 Zack Snyder directed Dawn of the Dead.

There was no Spartan king. They had a oligarchic.
This is the battle which Leonidas sent out 300 of his best spartans to fend off the persians at this little pass right?
I guess what Mel meant is Gerard Butler as Leonidas.

Sorry to point something so obvious, but the atmosphere makes the trailer look more like a graphic novel than a movie, I like that and I will look forward to it.

How many? Herodotus' 3.4 million, or 1 million, or 250,000 or so Persian soldiers in this one?

Haven't read much of the comic, but I learned about the Battle of Thermopylae in my Ancient/Medieval World History class, and it was very interesting. Can't wait to see it on screen.

That looks awesome! I wonder how historically accurate it is though? I would go see it just for the special effects in any case.

Well, as far I know, Leonidas (Gerard Butler) was a King of Sparta.
Anyway, look what I came up with:

Yeah, I know that we aren't supposed to fully trust whatever we read on the intrawebz, but come on, all 65,800 search results (most) refer to Leonidas as a Spartan King.

Saw this trailer at the theatre today.
WOW is the only word I could come up with. Comes out in March and I've already set a date for it.
Hope this one is good as it is gorgeous to the eye.

Sparta had two kings technically. It was more egalitarian than any other society in the ancient world. Plutarch says that young Spartans were taken from their mothers, placed into barracks, and told to steal for food to breed comraderie among the troops. This was because hoplite warfare relied on the crush of men pushing forward in a unified line for full effectiveness (it was a stimulus for democracy as there was no place for rank in the line). On a side note, that scene with all the arrows is kind of interesting, the rear ranks of the phalanx held their spears upright to deflect arrows.
End of my Classical Studies rant (I'm a major).
Anyway the movie looks interesting; I really only want to see how the barbarian horde is portrayed. And I never knew that Frank Miller had a version of the battle. No matter what though, it will be better than Troy.

The Spartans were the first oppresive totaletarian society in western civilization. They were at direct odds with the liberal Atheneans and their entire society was based off the subjegation and opression of the Helots.

Well the Spartans themselves were equal, it was impossible for their state to exist without the manpower of the Helots. They enslaved them, but back then slavery was a norm.
