View Full Version : Who do you support?

In any sport, name whoever you support in either your favourite sport or every sport. I'll start with my favourite sport and go in declining order of the ones I can watch without getting bored (except with Football when 99,999-100,000 times I get bored).

Hockey (possibly the most exciting sport ever. When they're not scoring they're slamming into each other, and then when they're done with that, they start beating the **** out of each other. Without poncey gloves like Boxers use). NHL. Colorado Avalanche.

Hockey. EIHL. MobilX Vipers.

Basketball NBA Detroit Pistons.

Football (the real kind). While I wouldn't really call myself a fan of this, in this country if you don't watch it you get real bored alot, as it's all that's ever on smeggin T.V. And usually this team isn't as boring as the others Arsenal.

Baseball: Cleveland Indians. Don't watch baseball, but I root for them since my dad does.

College football: Ohio State Buckeyes! We’re going to be undefeated this year! And we lost our entire defensive line.....haha!

Don't really watch any other sports, except NFL football, in which I don't exactly have a "favorite" team.

Joeshie, exactly how is American Football real Football?

Your foot/feet touch the ball for what, 30 seconds per game?

And it was called Football after the real Football was made. I may hate the game, but at least I know that it's the real Football.

It's the real football because Americans said so. Doesn't matter if the ball is kicked maybe half a dozen times, total, (and that's only worth one point, no less,) and the kicker is basically at the bottom of the team heirarchy.

That's what Americans are all about. Carrying a ball around in their hands and insisting that it's the "real" football. If people here liked Football (the actual real one,) they'd probably call it "handball." But that's already a joke of a sport, anyway.

Football (real football, mind you): the Bulgarian national team, when it comes to world championships; Liverpool, when it comes to club championships; and Slavia - a Sofia-based team, when it comes to local championships. Oh, and the Bulgarian team in whatever Olympic sports they qualify for (GO ice-skating and biathlon!). That's pretty much it. Oh, and rationality FTW!

WHAT!?!?!? Manchester!!! (flips the bird as all crazy british soccer fans do :P)
2 years ago, my assistant manager coned me in to watching the Manchester Uninted/Arsenal game. i was sold. that was the craziest thing I have ever seen. Soccer is pretty awesome.

I'm fairly obsessed with motorsports. WRC (World Rally Championship) is my favorite form. Marcus Grondholm, and Peter Solberg are my favorite current drivers. I saw Marcus hold a drift around the apex of like 3 consecutive corners....0_0 Tommi Makinen is my favorite of all time Rally Drivers. My secong favorite is Ari Vattinenn. (sp)

My Second favorite form, is Formula 1. It's the most technicaly advanced form of motorsports in the world. They suck 800 HP out of a N/A 2.5 Litre V8. 'nuff said. Micheal Schumacher is my favorite living driver. Ayrton Senna is my favorite of all time. If you have seen him drive, you know why.

I casualy watch hockey when I can. If I have to root for someone, I guess i would say the TB Lightning. I used to go to lightning games when I was a kid, and I have been in the ice palace more than enough times, so I guess them.

I can't really get in to any more stick and ball sports. the contract BS, the lazy players. Steriods. To dumb. Just play the damn game and earn your 50 million.

When it comes to sports, I've got some rather bizzare loyalties. Since I am originally from Ohio and half of my family is from Michigan, I end up liking a lot of those teams in conjunction with the home teams. Though, I really only like a couple of organized team sports, so it keeps the confusion to a minimum.

American Football: I only like college level; OSU Buckeye, Michigan Wolverines (Yes, I come from a "broken" home) and Georgia Tech Yellowjackets (which earns me the bane of most of my UGA friends).

Baseball - National League: Atlanta Braves, except they did rather poor this year.
Baseball - American League: Usually a Tribe (Cleveland Indians) fan, but since Detroit has been doing so well this year, I find myself rooting for them, too.
Baseball - Japan: Hanshin Tigers. Koushien FTW.

Hockey: NHL only; Detroit Red Wings and Atlanta Thrashers (because their games are cheap and I can see most of the awesome teams play when they come to ATL).

Soccer: I only watch World Cup and I root from a very Nationalistic standpoint; USA, England and Germany mostly.

Good taste. Chivas FTW

However I personally like the Monarcas team. I think we call the mexican leage Futbol de clubes mexicanos or whatever. There isn't a specific name for the mexican soccer clubs.

--

Of international soccer teams I like: Turkey, Greece, this World Cup's Argentina team (though Batistuta will be missed) and this World Cup's Spain team (they have promise, they just need some star attacker players). This World Cup's Portugal team impressed me. Especially when they played the most dirty soccer game I've ever seen in my life against one of those Scandinavian teams (Holland?).
I also liked this World Cup's Australia team. I hate to see their good coach go, they really needed him.
Of the Spanish league, I root for Osasuna, the little team that could. But just because Javier Aguirre (who is no longer their coach) is Basque and he's a cool guy.

--

Of american baseball: Twins!!! They might of lost in today's game, but maybe this time they will win the World Series. *crosses fingers*

--

The only other sport I really watch in figure ice skating and I guess you'd have to root for individual skaters rather than teams.

Of american skaters, I'm rooting for Alissa Czysny (or however you spell her last name; I always misspell it). She has the style and the beauty (and an enviable S-stretch spiral) but her jumps stink. If I were the USFSA, I'd get a top coach to train her and correct her jumps because she's got it; but if you fall on a jump, nothing else matters in this sport (the new system heavily penalizes falls making a fallen Triple Lutz practically worthless). It's such a shame because I highly respect her as a person. She's humble, hardworking and smart. She's currently putting time in her sport and she's studying a university career at the same time (believe me, that's VERY hard). She can even speak french very well.
I like Sasha Cohen despite her brattiness, but I hope she doesn't dare continue being an amateur skater this year. Her back injuries are way too serious and she doesn't have the seriousness to really fix her inconsistant jumps to win the Olympic Gold medal (everyone that follows this sport jokes around about the irony of her winning the Silver because she ALWAYS wins Silver). Heck, I don't even think she has even won a petty World Championship even though she's been around for 8 years. She is a wonderful skater and people would pay thousands of dollars just to see her skate in circles on the ice; she should retire, earn millions on the ice shows doing safe figures that don't damage her back anymore and live it cool. Let the new kids face the Rising Sun from now on.

Of Japanese skaters; well let's face it; Japan is the future of Ladies figure ice skating. They just discovered that they are a nation of little people with the right body for a sport made for the little people. Mao Asada may have only competed three times last year on the Senior level because of a loophole in the rulebook, but she caused such a huge uproar that really helped popularize the sport in Asia. Plus she's freaking talented and uttermost adorable looking. I don't know if she can still do them, but you've gotta respect someone who makes Triple Axels seem as easy as they are (considering there's only like 4 females on the entire planet than can actually do them). Yet despite doing the Triple Axels, she's not a boring jump tank like Yoshi Onda is. mao can do the spins and the artwork of a routine. I'm actually quite hyper waiting anxiously for the figure ice skating season to start in the next 2 weeks. I doubt she will compete in the first event though. She will probably do the NHK and the China Grand Prix events since they favor asian skaters.

I'm also anxious to see Mao's rival from South Korea named Yu-Na Kim. Everyone agress her federation robbed her of free publicity when they denied her the right to participate in the Senior Grand Prix like Mao did. She can do the Triple Axel too so I'm just really, really anxious to see her in action this year.

I think at least in ladies, figure ice skating will be very interesting this year. I think ice Dancing will also be great because of the american team: Belbin/Agosto. I'm hoping the mexican Ice Dancing team: the Muñanas will be better and score high enough in the Grand Prix to be shown on tv. I think they are good skaters and have a lot of talent. I hope they take advantage of the retirement of several strong ice teams this year to move up in the ranks and become more popular. Sadly, Ice Dancing is more of a popularity contest than a serious sport. Since all of the top teams have almost identical skating talent, judges tend to give goody medals to their pampered teams. I hope they will treat the Muñanas and the Delober/Schoenfelder teams with the respect they deserve. The Delober team was robbed last year FTW.

Manly, no. Superbowl couple years back, the one with New England in it. Guy got scraped by some other guy, went down like a sniper shot him, and was crying his eyes out, screaming in agony as if something really bad had just happened (when it so hadn't. Watched the replay several times and it was a pathetic scrape).

Rugby, the game where they don't wear body armor. Guy got shoulder barged to the head and was out cold. The Ref went over to him, bent down and slapped his face off. He jumped (like when you're trying to sleep and you imagine yourself walking and you trip and then your whole body jumps 'cause your heart skipped a beat), stood up and shook his head and then went back in the game.

I've seen videos of "amazing" rugby tackles. Here is the thing I noticed: In rugby, all the "amazing" tackles are exactly the same. One guy running at full speed gets nailed in his chest area by an opposing player. Not to say that these tackles aren't painful and they don't hurt, but footballs most amazing tackles send people flying in the air, getting hit near the shoulders/head area, landing on your head, getting hit in your waist/legs, etc. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHugHubq0JQ)

And just because you have padding on, doesn't mean that the hits don't hurt. There is an average of 40,000 concussions a year in high school football.

Ok guys we've moved the ball 2 inches, huddle. Ok and it's moved back another 1 cm, huddle. TIME OUT! Huddle, ok, it's an 80 minute game and we've already had it lasting 5 hours, one more huddle me thinks. GAME OVER NEW ENGLAND WIN, huddle.

Yes, because kicking a ball around a field is so much better. They rarely get in range of the goal and a majority of the time the ball is spent in the middle of the field. How fun is that to watch.

Yes and Chess involves much more strategy than your Football could ever hope to achieve, so by that logic we should all be watching Chess.

Yes and Chess involves much more strategy than your Football could ever hope to achieve, so by that logic we should all be watching Chess.

What logic? I said that since it incorporates more strategy than soccer, it makes it more interesting to watch. It's a physical sport that places a large amount of emphasis on strategy. Don't assume that just because I enjoy a decent amount of strategy in my game that I want as much strategy as possible.

Listen, I hate both versions of Football. But Soccer is the real Football. You use your feet and it was invented first and called Football first.

Who says that the foot in football has to be a reference to using your feet in the game. A theory has been suggested that football is called football not because you use your feet, but because you play on your feet.

It’s just another case of the U.S stealing our names. York, Chelsea, England, Washington etc…

You should be honored that the most powerful country in the world is using your names. ;)

What you are doing is trying to pull a strawman arguement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawman_argument), which is a logical fallacy.

Let me give you an example:

Me: I prefer sweet corn because it is sweeter than regular corn.
You: Then according to your logic, ice cream must be the best food in the world.

You will have to forgive me and the Dictionary, we both were under the idea that being a third-world country had nothing to do with how one single citizen feels about the entire country.

I was wondering if anyone supports NASCAR in here?!? I haven't watched much especially this past year but I mainly support Bobby LaBonte and Bill Elliot( I think he still races since..like I said I haven't watched much this past year.)

American Football > Soccer

Manly, no. Superbowl couple years back, the one with New England in it. Guy got scraped by some other guy, went down like a sniper shot him, and was crying his eyes out, screaming in agony as if something really bad had just happened (when it so hadn't. Watched the replay several times and it was a pathetic scrape).

Pfft, soccer is even worse. One dude trips and OMG! REF! REF! FOUL! THAT WAS FOUL! REF! ALLALLALLALLALLAH!!!

and in NASCAR...GO RICKY BOBBY!!!

I think soccer would be so much better if all of the leagues were nothing but people who act like Zidane.

Yep, someone needs to tell these people that diving is a seperate sport.

You will have to forgive me and the Dictionary, we both were under the idea that being a third-world country had nothing to do with how one single citizen feels about the entire country.

He means because education is so bad in the states and there's that many poor people on the streets. Plus other things like that. I see exactly where he's coming from.

Education is bad in the states?
Wow...I must have missed something when I lived over seas.
Its been pointed out a million times that the results are skewed. Everyone looks at the final numbers and makes a conclusion.
For once cant someone question the document they read.

Yup, despite the fact that we have a large majority of the best universities in the world, we are clearly lacking in education.

Yes your Uni's are good. But normal schools suck. He says in his alone he was the only one who knew what city was on there border, and where Canada/Mexico and the U.K were.

Some of em pointed to like Asia for the U.K. ASIA!

So either it's his area or most High Schools/(er, what do you guys call the school that kids age 4-11 goto?) are poor on educational standards.

by football i hope to dear god that you mean soccer, because that american "football" does not belong in the same dictionary as the word elegant.

Of course! There is no other football, just cheap imitations of rugby with shoulder pads and spandex tights. ^_^

Sure there are some stupid people in high school, but this is really the fault of both the school system and the student. Surely you have kids in your educational system that are rather stupid.

Allot of people who come to the US or have a friend in the US tend to take their word or what they see too literaly. The fact is even I as a Cuban/American does not know all about america. And I have lived here for a good 14 years. The reason is with 300Million+ people I can never know what the entire population is like.
Our education system isnt some shipwreck I find it has pros and cons and it is largely effected by region and not South = Dumb North = Smart like most people think.

Had something I was going to post, but couldn't check it properly as it stopped DL-ing halfway through. It's a clip of R.Williams' stand up where he rips into Bush for being dumb and for recieving greatness as a graduation gift, lol.
