Children's books are a good answer. I have a couple, fun easy to read characters, easy story. I got mine at a Japanese store in Salt Lake City, dunno where you can find yours but children's books are probably better for you then manga. The earliest age manga I know of are works like Ribon which is for 10-14 year old girls. Perhaps there is manga for 5 year olds but I can't think of what in blazes they'd be.

A start perhaps? http://www.google.com/search?q=japanese+children%27s+books&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

What's Michael and Detective Conan may be of interest. Manga such as One Piece and Naruto, or even high school themed series such as Koi Koi, are also series you may wish to look into. For slightly more advanced material, Hanaukyo Maid-tai and Fruits Basket are fun reads. Children's books such as Hanataro are good material for beginners. As for magazines, Hiragana Times seems to be a popular one. All of the material listed above is either in kana or have furigana.

If you are unsure on where to purchase such material, Anime Nation has a limited selection of untranslated manga and books. Unfortunately, they appear to not have any of the series above, save the 12th volume of Fruits Basket. For that reason I direct you to sasugabooks.com, or amazon.co.jp. Both are good sources for what cannot be found here, but Sasuga Books is slightly cheaper than Amazon since, if I remember correctly, their shipments are not sent from overseas.

I think he's looking for kiddy books because he's trying to learn the written language and he needs something thats very very basic. You have some books that are meant to be read to kids and others that are meant to be read by kids. The "read by" books are kind of educational in the sense that they let kids practice on the basics while increasing their vocabulary and sentence structure proficiency.

I think thats what he's going for. Manga aimed @ 10+ year olds and translated Harry Potter books might be a bit too advanced.

I find some books like that at my Half-Price Books all the time (Cincinnati, OH).

Just like what you were talking about, except it was a panda, not a dog.

My local bookstore has a Japanese book section and I found kiddy books helpful when I was just starting to learn Japanese. For instance I read 'Ari to kirigirisu'(The ant and the grasshopper-Aesop Fables) -_-; at the beginning.

Maybe it's hard to find those kinds of books in the States?

I love Japanese Children's text books. My Japanese tutor brings them quite often for my friends and I to work through. The lack of kanji and pictures make it pretty easy to learn a ton of new vocabulary in a quick amount of time.

Unfortunately I dont know where she gets them from. They're actually Japanese books, so she either brought them from Japan or imported them.

^ Is it an online site? I've been trying to find some really beginner books written in katakana or hiragama. If you find a site or a national store with them, post a link in this thread.
