View Full Version : Crime in small towns and areas?!

I just got a call from my aunt this morning. She told me that a local store was robbed early this morning. It's kind of a scary thing to think that small towns like hers or mine even could have a crime situation or a problem. My town here doesn't have much crime. Our most recent was a few months back when someone stole some rare coins. Not a big crime compared to other things that can happen but still those coins were worth a fortune. Most small towns should normally be safe from most crime but that isn't exactly accurate since alot of small town home owners have many expensive items. What are you guys thoughts on this?

I live in a small, safe town. I would gladly trade my situation with someone in a bad neighborhood who isn't stupid enough to actually welcome confrontations like I do.
Instead of violence, we have drug problems, particularly at the high school. What a dumb issue. At least with fighting and shooting, there's exercise.

Crime will happen in the safest of cities. Small towns are no exception. As far as theft and petty vandalism, a lot of things happen in small towns, but that doesn't mean it's unsafe. Chalk it up to desperation or boredom.

Our town has no police watch at all. Any crimes that do occur are handled by neighboring police forces. Lately the cops have been called around this area not for crimes but for emo teenagers on a rampage. One of the teens was actually going after someone else. It got our whole town and the neighboring ones really frustrated for a little while. It was a crazy time that's for sure.

There's a gang in my town. Lmao they live near the rail road tracks.
I live in a suburban neighborhood though...so it's okay. :)
No recorded person in history has lived past 121, buddy. Oldest was like 120 and 4 months.

funny story,
... my friend keeps his Computer (his old one) by his sliding door. It's a POS, like 6 years old, outdated, and no credit card numbers or anything on it. One day someone breaks into his house and steals it. They only steal the PC though. I could never figure it out. He endded up lucking out, insurance covered it and he was able to buy a MUCH better PC. Very odd

You know, I'm not sure why, but I always relate "Small Town" with "Pedophile." Weird, huh?
I guess I understand where you're coming from. Like, you feel like you know everyone/share the same beliefs or whatnot. Still, once John Doe closes his bathroom door, yeah...
Anywho, I think you'd have a blast here, Ember. Like, two or so weeks ago, I guess, some nutjob hijacked a MARTA (Metro Atlanta's public transportation system) bus....AND, my 15-year-old brother was on the bus. From what he told me, the guy was hopped on something other than Goofballs (Hmm, maybe he was insane). I think he was harassing the bus driver, left, jumped on top of the bus, ripped off the Emergency Escape window thingy on the top of the bus, climbed through, somehow got control over the bus, drove around in some kind of crazy circle, and when the cops (or was that MARTA police?) arrived, he somehow sprayed them in the face with their own Mace.
At least, I think that's how it went. Whilst he was telling my dad and I about the incident, he wouldn't stop laughing, so that's all I got, I think. I bet that little douche was peeing his pants when that dude ripped that window thingy off of the bus and jumped inside. He talks big, but he's quite punkish, imo. I'm pretty sure I would've remained cool, because you know... I am ME. :naughty:

I lived in a small town in the FL Panhandle for about 2 years. (population of about 3,500) There has only been 3 murders in about 25 years in the county. The most recent was while I was in highschool. One of my class mates killed his dad. (this kid was messed up....)
The other 2 murders were both domestic as well. Most crime in small towns is far from random. Alot goes on "behind the scenes" as you could say in small towns. It's usually over money, or position (city government is a sham). The reason small town stores and banks get robbed, because the police force is always small, and extremely unequipped to deal with such a crime. They almost always go unsolved, if even investigated.
There was a pretty big meth problem, simply because it was so undeveloped around there, you can get away with it. The county I lived in was the #1 county for trafficing drugs in and out of. The county next to it, is #1 in Marijuana production in the south east.
As for the gang problem.... I now live in southern Delaware. If anyone is from this area, they know it IS the armpit of america. There are a few "gangs" as you could call them. But they are mostly harmless idiots running around, breaking in to houses, and stealing video games, and trading them in at GameStop <_< .
It's usually due to bordem, and economical situations. I could go on for like 100 pages about the people in this town, and how the government supports ignorance. I will refrain, because, I dont think I could do it without offending someone.
Case in point, America is going to hell, and small town are having an influx of crime, but that doesn't mean it's not safe to live there. Just don't piss anyone off, or leave you purse sitting on top of your car, and expect it to be there when you come back.

Heh, I DEFINITE don't live in a small town. My area is technically suburban, but it's still just 5 miles from downtown Mexico City. I sorta view my area as a sort of ghetto where we only leave our little municiple if deemed really necesairy. However, it is still pretty heavily populated. It's probably the most populated area in the west side of the city (the neighboring city of Toluca looks like a petty village to me). I think it's a population of about 1 million people. So no, I'm DEFINITELY not in a little town.
However, there isn't that much violent crime in my area. Mostly auto theft and house theft, minor crimes involving the poor driving of the locals here like passing a red light and the people trying to bribe the cop out of it (oh, the stories I could tell you guys on personal experiences on this matter! I'll never ever in my whole life forget how the blubber on that fat cop's belly moved up and down on the Periférico highway to get his free breakfast. Not any sane human being would dare cross a highway on rush hour traffic for a few tamales and some atole; but he did and seemed happier than a kid in XMAS. ).
There's still lots of problems regarding the city hall not doing much to legalize the "informal" businesses that sell piracy and don't pay back taxes yet they put their shop anywhere they fell like (hospitals, major avenues, you name it). There's also still people trying to build irregular houses in municiple parks which are deemed protected land. They take advantage of floosey laws saying if you manage to complete the cement house before they catch you, they can't evict you. This crime has been going down now that a lot of parks in my area are covered by metal bars. There's still a legal loophole concerning a whole yummy bag of apartment buildings some contractors got liscenses for to build right next to the Lake of Guadalupe. Obviously nobody that lives there wants this. I was there a few weeks ago and I can see why; the lake is beautiful with natural fauna thriving very well and there's just no roads and infrastructure to build homes for 5,000 people. The traffic in the highways in my area are beyond inhumane as they are (and the traffic is only getting worse everyday, you're dead if you get on the Perfiférico highway past 6 am on the dot).
I'd say most of the crime in my area are related to people wanting to get permits for housing when there's just no more space for more cars and homes. Go build pretty buildings over at Benito Juarez and Alvaro Obregón where new and fancy homes are quite welcome.
Obviously not all Mexico is like this; it's like saying everywhere in Japan is like Tokyo. So no, the criminal problems of the little towns in the US are nothing like the local problems where I live.
As for the small town villages, they run by the slogan: "The law of the pueblo". If you're an outsider and mess with a local, everyone else in the village will come after you. You still hear every now and then crook cops getting stoned to death by the entire village because they wanted to kidnap a kid or something like that. There's a reason why the Dry law (no booze on election day) isn't heavily enforced.

I live in a suburb of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul), and I'm not sure if my area would be considered a small town or not. There are around 50,000 people in the three towns that make up the area. Anyway, I work at Pizza Hut, and there have been drug deals going on behind it and stuff. One of the other people that worked there was sprayed in the face with pepper spray once.

Well they caught the person who robbed the store. I guess he had hit 13 places within the past fews weeks in other parts of our county. No one around here had no idea about it..at all. At the place he robbed he thought there was just the one girl who usually is there was alone. Here her boss was in the back he heard and saw everything so he was able to give the police a FULL description.

You know that thing on the national news lately with that baby (Amber I think he name was) being kidnapped? It was in our area.
Some guy went into a bank about one minute from our house and said he had a bomb in his briefcase.
Also, we planted some pompous grass in our driveway and someone dug them up and stole them all. Talk about a low-life loser.
That's all I can think of. Nothing much really happens here.

Actually, in the area where I live, I consider it to be kinda small-town-ish but I've been amazed as of late with the type of stuff in the area. Actually, all of these involve the local Univeristy, too, which I think may be a factor...
There was one girl (she lived off campus) who let her ex-boyfriend into her apartment one night and he raped her and beat her to death, then shot himself. All of this happened a few days before classes were scheduled to begin. Turns out, I was supposed to have a class with her this term but I never knew her (and on a campus of ~20,000, she didn't stick out much). A few weeks ago there was a girl (another off-campus person) who OD'ed on something and found in the trunk of her car. And last week, there was an attempted daylight abduction on campus of a freshmen on her way back to her dorm. Thankfully, she punched the SOB in the face and ran to safety and reported him.
Before this, the city as a whole doesn't have a serious crime problem, and even then, what crime was committed was merely petty theft and such like that. I personally think that people are attempting to commit crimes on campus because it is the only portion of the town where firearms are, for the most part, prohibited. I believe there was a larger crime problem 25 or 30 years ago (I don't know exactly as I only moved here 4 years ago) and the city council passed some very liberal* gun laws, such as mandating every household within the city limits be in possession of at least one firearm. In short, an armed society is a polite society. But as the University has grown so much in the past decade and a half, one has a large target of reletively unarmed potential victims, unless they decide to fight back, which I presume most would.
*liberal - traditional meaning of the word referring to liberty and freedom, not American political meaning.

I live in a town of 5,000 people, and there's quite a bit of crime for the population. It has a somewhat large drug problem, and a murder ocurred a couple years ago because of a bad drug deal. What's interesting is how when it happens in a small town you usually tend to know the people involved in some way or another. Example, the place I used to work at was broken into after close by someone I hung out with in high school. It was really bad because it almost looked like I had left the door unlocked that night because I had been the one to close, but he broke the lock instead of picking it so my reputation stayed clean, thankfully.
There's a few more examples, the most recent being my mom knew the sister of the janitor who took the shotgun away from the kid in the recent school shooting in Wisconsin.

Crime can unfortunely happen anywhere. Look at what happened in Paradise PA.
As for myself, my old city had no crime at first; it's only been the last couple of years that crime has started to come to my town. At my apartment complex, we've had shootings, fights, drug deals, attempted kidnappings...so I moved to a smaller town.
So far, I don't think anything's happened. Everyone's been nice so far.

I used to live in a small town within Wisconsin, we called our local Stop 'n Go by the name of 'Stop 'n Rob' just because of how many times people robbed the store. Also, I was always sure to take extra caution with making sure possessions on my property were locked up well, because property theft was commonplace too.
Crime is present in small towns, but may be a little different than in areas with a high population.
Clearwater is a large city--much larger than I'm used to living in. Even though, I never worry about leaving my car unlocked while parked on my property or accidently forgetting to shut the garage door. Why? Property theft isn't as commonplace. I suspect people don't try to steal from homeowners because it is much easier to purchase a handgun in Florida; and the law seems to take more of the side of the person being victimized.
Just a sign of the times, is all.

Nothing has happened around here since the robbery. It's nice to have things calm again. My dad's friend who lives up the street had money stolen off him time and time again a few months back..it was kinda his fault. He put his money in a metal box and put it in the back of his toilet then he told his teenage friends where it was. O_o; Drr if you tell them where it is it's not exactly secret.

On the news this morning, I heard that there was a home invasion about 3 blocks from where I live, and the guy in the house was shot dead. Don't know all the details yet, because they're still investigating it.

It happened RIGHT across the street from where I work. many small areas are suffering form crime as there is nothing to do in these areas and most and many of the small cities are having crystal meth problems, which will cause some users to commit other crimes, such as robbery to feed their addiction. it's really sad.
