View Full Version : Kaworu's fate in the manga: discussion & speculation.

In the most recent chapter of Eva, the battle between Shinji and Kaworu unfolded very similar to how it did in the anime, except Shinji doesn't have Kaworu grasped in the hands of Unit 01.

So, the question is "how will this end?". Will Kaworu lose his head like in the anime, or will Shinji spare him? If the latter, then what do think Sadamoto might have in store for Kaworu's character?

Kaworu's portrayal in the manga, despite being rather twisted in nature, was suprosingly deep compared to his sweet-and-innocent act in the anime. Despite his cold harshness towards people, he seemed like he really started to care for Shinji. Shortly before he left to go invade Terminal Dogma, Kaworu really seemed hell-bent on getting Shinji to call him his friend. If Sadamoto decides to have Kaworu spared, then this could possibly see a whole new dynamic added to the Shinji/Kaworu relationship.

This perks my interests...let's wait and see what'll become of him.
I still think I'll be killed in some way....unless Sadamoto's mechanics within his Eva universe have changed somewhat in ways the manga hasn't yet shown. (different angel amounts, ect)

No, I'm pretty sure he meant AMVH2.

(For those of you who haven't seen it, throughout the video they show the shot of Eva-01 holding Kaworu, occasionally with funny background noises- in the third or fourth there're crickets chirping, and in the next one Kaworu is singing "Somebody kill me please, kill me, I want to die...". In the final shot after the credits roll, the screen blacks, you hear the "sploosh" sound, and you see Eva-01's head falling into the LCL. I guess Kaworu got tired of waiting for Shinji to make up his mind ;) )

If Shinji doesn't squish him, won't Kaworu unite with Lilith and start 3I? So unless Sadamoto plans to omit the raid on Nerv and the Harpy battle and skip straight to Instrumentality, I doubt if he would make such a change.

*SPOILER ALERT: Don't read if you haven't read the latest chapter.*

Well, it seems like Sadamoto had Shinji go ahead a go through with it. While they never actually show Shinji kill Kaworu, it's pretty clear from the subsequent scenes that he did so. However, it wasn't quite as depressing as it was in the anime, as Shinji and Kaworu seem to have parted on good terms. I was hoping that Sadamoto would try something different here, but that was not to be had.

Though he wasn't as popular as in the anime, the manga iteration of Kaworu had a surprising amount of depth and development. He starts off as an amoral, callous, misanthropic prick — far from the sweet and charming act of anime Kaworu. Especially after his fight with Armisael, he really started to change as time went on. He started to show genuine concern for Shinji and seemed to desire nothing more than to be his friend. Overall, I liked Kaworu's portrayal in the manga. His motives and feelings were far less ambiguous and he showed surpring growth during his time, and I'd argue that he was less "evil" that others might admit. Perhaps Shinji and Kaworu will meet again in 3I.

Speaking of 3I, the next big question is how will Sadamoto handle Instrumentality. Shinji, who is a much more stable and emotionally strong person the the manga, seems in fairly good shape. Definitely a far cry from the distraught, nervous wreck, shell of a man he was by this point in the anime. How will he deal with Instrumentality? Will Sadamoto write the 3I sequences in a majorly different way than in EoE? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Despite being a tad lackluster, and having a rather "expected" demise, I will agree that EMK was a least a dynamic character, his overall demeanor seemed to change into something...tolarable (for a anime Kaworu fan in the least :P )
A fitting end, for him, nontheless.
Won't bring back the emaciated kitten though. ;_;

Since I haven't read all of the manga that's been released (only up to Vol.8), refresh my memory: what happened to him?

See latest manga stage. (http://www.evamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=54925#54925) Sadamoto is getting Emo Boy primed.

He's a kitten killer:crybaby:

Yeah but I can forgive him cause he's just so cute... *huggles Kaworu*

I kind of hope that they don't kill him, but I know that's probably where it's going. I'll cry when they do. I will. But he'll live on - immortalized in endless yaoi fanfics.

**SPOILERS**
He was kind of a jerk in the manga though - I can't believe he told Rei he thought she'd be "A heftier girl" - I'd be slapping him if I were Rei. Then I'd bend him over my knee and spank him. :shifty:

I can't read Japanese too well (I can't read Kanji at all) so I kind of had to put together Vol. 10 by the pictures and from what we saw in the anime. I hope it'll be out in English soon (or even German cause I can understand that better than Japanese).
