Encyclopedia Dramatica said:
Unless you're academically intelligent, you're basically ****ed and will never amount to anything. Though obviously, this doesn't apply if you're good at sports.
I know ED might not be, well, serious about anything (if you look at that bit about Steve Irwin, you'll know what I mean.)
But SERIOUSLY now.
We've ALL experienced this.
Like, how about my math teacher for instance? I understand the school spirit ****, and the fact that the school would look like losers and be pretty ****ed if we didn't have a team in pretty much every sport.
But if there are kids missing assignments, constantly being late, and failing the first test of the year, and yet STILL being able to play in games, that's not fair to people like me who neither know nor care about sports.
Care to discuss?

Don't think to much about it. The a-typical jocks that think *insert sport of choice* is what makes you popular and who attempt to carry that mentality into the real world had better get used to saying "Would you like fries with that."
Work hard, worry about yourself. You'll succeed, and if they don't, who the hell cares? Somebody has to bring me my coffee.
Thats the real world mentality.

This is real world example of a double standard that your teacher has established due to his/her own bias. Why do you get grilled? You just answered your own question. Besides, who cares if they talk in class? They're not learning a damn thing, and you are. You're the one coming out on top.
Ps. Not trying to be too harsh, but nows a good time to grow up. This neurotic, crying when somebody looks at you funny crap is absurd. If you don't want to be ridiculed, I'd suggest you stop acting like a baby when faced with a tough situation. Believe me, it will get you no where.

I just hate loud noise is all. It makes me...really uppitdy and upset is all. Is it babyish to hate loud noise.
Another thing I notice:
They try to make up for the dumb kids by adding art to subjects that don't have anything to do with art.
Example:
We had to do a planetisimal timeline in science. Most of the grade was how good it looked, how well it was drawn. I would scan the pics in the book to show you how absurd it was that we ALL had to draw it, but putting textbooks in the printer is a *****.
I got an 8/12 on it, in other words, a 66%. D.
Then, we did something that I WAS good at, a line graph displaying sunspot cycles. We had to answer scientific questions, USE OUR BRAINS.
I got a 14/15 on that. A 93. A.
So they're trying to make up for the fail grades on the tests by making it artistic. I was told I was in danger of failing science, yet if you give me a written test, I'd ace it.

I have to agree with neXus, generally speaking people with the hardcore jock additude don't amount to much. 2-3 years after high school's over and a few failed attempts to get a degree in anything in junior college, and knocking up the "cutest girl on the cheerleading team" they usually end up in retail, of fast food places because they weren't good enough to go pro, and life is really starting to hit them.
Sad part is, they never see it comming since they're getting the easy ride from teachers and staff because their on the football team, and high school sports are so impotant (lol).
Fast forward 10 years, their 25 and a college drop out with a D- average (which was good enough to pass them through high school) since either A) the teachers don't care and just pass them because they don't want them around for another year or B) The teacher realizes they won't amount to anything other then a pizza boy, since they have no real skills other than running really fast and throwing a ball, and the additude that their the hottest **** on the planet won't allow them to wake up and see they have no real skills.
But the most honest and helpful advise I can give is, who cares? They get slid through classes that your working hard in and getting decent grades (they're likely not). Sure it sucks to see people slack off and do nothing and still get rewarded with advancing to the next grade just cause they play sports, but thats the way life is sometimes. In the real world people get jobs they don't really have the skills for, but never get replaced just because they "know someone". But if you go through life getting angry everytime something unfair happens, you'll be mad all the time, and it won't get you anywhere. Basically relax, if it bugs you enough do like animematt said and go to the principle, but don't suddenly think that your going to alter the way the school works and suddenly jocks will be shoulder to shoulder in the library studing with everyone else cause they are told they won't get special treatment anymore.

I come from an area in Canada which has one of the highest drop out rates in the country, why, because a high school drop out can get a job on the oil rigs and make around $100,000 a year. places which are hiring are so desperate for employees that they are willing to pey a large some of money to these people, even jobs like fast food will start people at $14/hour, when the minimum wage is set at $7/hour. so people drop out and take these jobs instead of getting an education which will grantee people a more stable career.
As for the jocks, well just know that your smater than them and when you go to your 10 year high school reunin just prove that you made something of yourself and they haven't. also Life is unfair, sometimes it screws you and sometimes you screw it just don't let it get to you.

Double standards are a prt of this world, live, learn, and look forward to...life, reagardless. Maybe pointing out your teacher's hypocrisy if it infringes upon your ability to learn (lawl) might set things straight. Any sort of action really. Of course, done politly may help ya so they'll put their obvious bias off of you and make them think your "good" or something. =P But then, I've hailed from Catholic shool for all except for kindergarten of my education, and teachers (not a single nun in my school currently o.o) are used to getting their ***** kissed, even if they aren't "good."
Why? School's always in danger of losing them to the better wages of public schools. Even if said public schools aren't as good acdemically.
I just hate loud noise is all. It makes me...really uppitdy and upset is all. Is it babyish to hate loud noise.
Eh, don't worry about it, those sort of emotions and fears tend to get put into perspective as you mature(which is why it's important to actually.,..eh, mature.), and you realize what's important, what's truly fearful in this world, what isn't, ect.
I'm certainly different now then when I as 13 (hated loud teachers as well), and didn't really need anyone telling me to "shape up" really.
Everyone's different.

I guess I'm still not used to this double standard **** because I left public school at the beginning of 6th grade, before we went to JH, and I went to a VERY small Catholic school of around 200 kids and
A) We didn't have real sports teams (everyone played Optimist)
B) It's easier to control 200 kids rather than 800 in a hallway.
C) The standards are way higher
D) My dad would have whipped my sorry white *** if I failed
E) Everyone was friends with everyone
F) Or maybe I didn't notice a double standard as I had become obsessed with an 8th grader last year
Takumi Fujiwara
September 26th, 2006, 05:07 PM
But here's the thing.
It's either A) They're making things easier for the athlete's while failing the smart kids. or B) I'm no longer challenged in school.
Well, this may sound like I'm being an ***, but as for "A" if the kids really are "smart" then they shouldn't be failing the material regardless of anyone elses grades, unless but smart you mean people that read the books and do the homework (studying and being smart are not nessisarily the same thing). that is as long as the teachers aren't giving the athlete's addition and subtraction homework and the "smart" kids are forced to study Calculus, and are getting graded on the same scale :P.
As for "B" that's possible, I don't know you, or what kind of ablities you have academically speaking, but as was suggested before, take AP classes (if your school offers them), read about and do things that interest you outside of class, go to college, etc.
Holy Knight
September 26th, 2006, 06:04 PM
Then here's what, and it's also pretty much what I now realise I should have done as a smart kid: uphold and surpass those smarts.
If they aren't teaching you what you want to know, tell them and push them to push you. See that history book that you have to go through in one year? Read it in three days, memorize it for the next four and get yourself tested. Basically, if you study up 3 to 4 hours every night, you'll end up jumping at least one or two grades, which will give you status as a "little genius", bragging rights against all the others who don't study and general feelings of superiority over your classmates (unless your personality tends otherwise).
Sadly, I slogged through high school and spent my time on video games instead of studying. I could have been in university by the age of more or less 16, but I simply didn't know or realise my own potential.
Basically, let those with their physical smarts excell in sports and let the other whither. If they want sports, that's their thing. Let them lose or win, it won't affect you. Become good at using your body and mind and be aware of it. Surpassing yourself is the single best thing you could do and you better start young.
Hot damn, if I could have gone back in time and said this to myself when I was 13, I'd do it. But I can't. So I'm telling you. You don't have to follow what I said so long as you use what you got and don't let it die off like 95% of the population.
And now I feel old. :(

Well in my HS, the kids in the sports teams had it pretty difficult. They had to maintain something like a 75 average in each class or get kicked off whatever team they were on. Oh and they couldn't cut class either. The coaches were always on their a**es if they messed up academically. Needless to say the people on the teams in my school were pretty smart. I however was pretty much the opposite. I missed class a lot and did pretty good in class. I was in orchestra so I guess the teachers assumed I was in practice or something. It also helped that I once in a while used the "I have audition coming up soon" excuse or the answer "yeah guess I did miss class yesterday", and after awhile teachers just stopped caring about my attendance. (That did screw me up cause I couldn't get into any AP classes due to my constant class cutting.)
Alice Catherine
September 27th, 2006, 03:43 AM
^But the coaches are never reported to until the very last minute. If a kid is struggling even at the beginning of a quarter, they let the kid play until the next quarter. Yes, I sit on this computer talking to strangers, and I play video ganes, and I watch anime till I die, but I can maintain my school work as well.
...and I doubt that my principal will listen anyways. My dad claims he's going to school and getting this "Art in Science" crap sorted out. I might actually have a chance since my teacher is 5'0 and 100 lbs and my dad's like 6'1 and 200 lbs. It's not that he'll hit her, he's just very intimidating. Plus, if the teachers don't believe in my discrimination, at least I have proof against my science teacher... :P

You don't have to be academically intelligent (I think that's how it was put) to be making bank. Look at our Head of State for example. You just have to be able to know how to make money, and then allocate all work to underlings.

I think your issue is that you were in public (Government) schools before, went to a private school, and have thusly come back to Government schools. You were taken out of the system, thus you don't know how the system "works".
Does it suck that people are able to sluff off becuase they're atheletes? Yeah, in an emotional sense it does. I felt the same way. Does it matter all that much in the long run? No, not really.
If you're concerned about people being treated fairly, I'd like to say college will be better, but to be honest, that illusion dies after sophmore year or so, once you're not in classes with 150 other people and have to be because of ******** "General Education" requirements. At that point, your teachers know you well enough for you to walk into class the first day or two and ask them if they prefer heckling from the front or the back of the room.
And I'm in the camp that one doesn't have to be "academically intelligent" to be successful, either. I know plenty of people who are academic folks and free market failures - I usually call them "Professor"; I also who have friends with strong 3.8-4.0 GPAs in ******** degrees who cannot find jobs in thier fields. What Industries want are experience, not just great grades. The ones who have great grades and good experience out of college are the ones who usually get the best jobs.

And another thing: THE DRESS CODE.
Seriously, I saw a girl get picked on by a teacher today because she had a short skirt on. I went up to her and asked her if she played a sport.
She said no.
Meanwhile, the cheerleaders are prancing around in skirts that don't even reach their HAND. (skirts must be longer than fingers when hands are at sides)

...that's not fair to people like me who neither know nor care about sports...
This is kind of an amusing topic. I think the reason a joke like that ended up in something called the Encyclopedia Dramatica is because the author of that article realized something important: None of that stupid high chool drama actually matters. At all. Ever. Anywhere. Outside of a chuckle over the embarassing highlights at the class reunion, it'll never be mentioned. And even then, you'll be more apt to blush from the thought that you actually cared about such incidents than you are from the embarassment of the incidents themselves.
I'm gonna back HK on this one. It's your life, and your education. If you want it to be effective, make it effective. So what if it's not fair? Fairness is irrelevant. If other kids want to short-change their own education for the short-term pleasure of tossing a ball around, let them. The only thing that should matter to you is whether or not you are getting the education you need.

^BUT I'M NOT.
If I have to go around being pissed/jealous about everything because of the mental 'issues' on anger management/hyperactivity, it doesn't help that the cheerleaders/athletes get special privlages.
And if I fail Science, I can't be in the honors course. Which is really the only place in this school I'll be challenged.
I don't know what's worse, being called a retard at private school for not understanding enough, or being called a smart-*** for understanding too much.

If I have to go around being pissed/jealous about everything...
Ah! Stop yourself. You don't have to go around ebing pissed. That's a choice you make - whether to let it get to you or not. If you look at what's happening in terms of "What they do doesn't matter to me", then it can't get to you, can it?
...it doesn't help that the cheerleaders/athletes get special privlages.
Let's assume for a minute that the moment a girl becomes a cheerleader in your school, they get an automatic A+ on everything for the school year, extra helpings of healthy food at lunch, and ... I dunno, general accolades and suchlike. Maybe a stipend.
How does that affect your ability to study the material and pass a test?
Answer: It doesn't. What CAN affect your ability to study the material and take a test is if you say, "Well, THEY don't have to study, so I shouldn't have to!" That can cause you to fail, but if you do, it's not their fault - it's the natural consequence of the choice you made regarding your education. Period.
To put it another way - if you train yourself to give up every time life seems unfair, you've pretty much doomed yourself to fail at life. NOW is the time to rise above that. Or not; your choice.
And if I fail Science...
If you work hard, you study, your know the material, you hand in your assignments correctly and you put the correct answers down on the test - you CANNOT fail. Or if you DO fail, then you'll have all the evidence you need to haul your Science teacher before the school board for playing favorites.
It's a simple game to win; all you have to do is decide to play it to win. Your education is entirely yours to throw away if you make that choice, however.

Here's a question: Did you ask the teacher to explain the grading rationale behind the assignment? Did you ask what you'd be graded on, how it would be assessed, and what was the educational value of each aspect of the assignment?
My guess is No, but assuming you did, then what did your teacher explain was the rationale behind the 'artistic' aspect of the assignment. Was it truly artistic expression that was being judged or merely 'clarity of expression' - the latter of which is QUITE important to someone pursuing science, by the way.
And here's another big one: WORK WITH A PARTNER.
Dude, srsly, that should have stopped at like, 5th grade.
It doesn't stop when you leave school, so why should it stop in thye 5th grade of your education.
Most scientists do not work by themselves in their own private laboratories. They work together. It's something you need to learn how to do, and something it appears your teacher is stressing as part of his lesson plan.
Trust me, when you grow up - 'chatting while working with your friends' is more of a best case scneario. Try working with people halfway around the world who barely speak your language, have no appreciable knowledge of the project you're both responsible for, and aren't held accountable (to you, as the project manager) for their actions. Working to get a decent grade with a slightly disinterested classmate is EASY.

I'm not being a ****, but maybe all the teachers assume you're anti-social because you exhibit anti-social behaviors in their classes. And from the previous posts it doesn't seem like you have actually tried talking to any of them.
Also back in high school I would've fit your definition of a jock. I agree to a point that some of them weren't sharpest knives in the drawers (sorry cliché metaphor), but quite few of them actually worked hard both on the field and the classrooms. 1st Paragraph: No, because I would have been reprimanded for being a smart-***.
Depends how you ask. Here's a handy example:
Good Way: Excuse me, teacher. I'm concerned about my grades and was wondering if you could tell me how the assignment will be graded. I'd like to know how much emphasis will be placed on different aspects of the project, and how this fits into the science unit as a whole, so I know how to tie it into the rest of what we're studying. Is there some day you could spare a few minutes after class to go over it with me?
Bad Way: Geez! What the heck does THIS have to do with anything? They actually PAY you to teach? Did you have to go to school for that, or do you win it in a lottery. This is SO lame.
Catching the difference, there? It doesn't matter whether you care about the assignment or respect your teacher or the establishment. If you're as intelligent as you think you are, you should be able to choose your words to manipulate the outcome a bit.
2nd: That's not what I asked. I asked why I had to be deemed anti-social because I like working by myself.
That's called "telling you the answer you need to hear, rather than the answer you wanted." I could clarify that, if you like.

Or you can always try to change the median used for the projects that want creativity. Example- The teacher wants a poster of... let's say modern Japan's culture. Everyone get's out their markers to work. I can't draw to save my life, but I adore photograpy. So, I make a collage from my trip to there (I've never actually been there, but this is just an example.) Not only does it look much better than if I had drawn it, but I get points for creativity. (Teachers dig that.) Just make sure you get your ideas okayed before you start. (Occasionally a teacher can be stubborn.) You just have to find what works for you.
Seriously though, yes it can seem like the world is out to get you. But the second you use that negative/upsetting energy to motivate yourself, the better your future will be. :)

It's called a generic example.
This is why I won't volunteer somewhere for my practicum.

You may not be able to, but they are all over the Internet. Sketch a layout design while everyone else is drawing in class and then complete it when at home using some BS photo editor like Paint or MS Photo-editor. Granted, if it is an in-class assignment then you're still boned but this may be an option for a project that is take-home.

She has strict guidelines.
SRSLY.
One of the requirements is "Follow all Directions on Sheet"

^Ask her if photocollage is out of the options then, unless the sheet says "must be hand-drawn". At that point, start drawing some circles, color them, give a few of them rings, turn it in and forget about it.
