What's the difference between an 'avatar' and a 'profile picture'? You can choose to edit either, but I've never heard of a profile picture! >_<

Your avatar is the little icon that appears with every post you make on the forum. Your profile pic is a picture (often of yourself) that you stick in your profile if you really want people to know what you look like.

Here's Bernard's profile: http://www.animenation.net/forums/member.php?u=9156

His avatar is on the left, while his profile pic on on the right.

Your avatar is what people see next to your user name in the forums. Your profile picture is, well, a picture that appears in your profile - a picture that other users see when they look at your profile. If someone has a profile picture (which not everyone does), it appears in the top right corner of their profile, next to the text blurb that says "[user name] is viewing/replying to [name of thread] at [time]."
