I never got around to asking this before. But I heard that FFIII and VI were the same game? Is this true?

The short answer: No, they're not.

Here's how it breaks down, or rather how it used to break down, prior to the launch of FFVII on PS1. Where the games had been localized for the US, I've given the US name.

Final Fantasy I(JPN/Famicom) -> Final Fantasy I(US/NES)
Final Fantasy II(JPN/Famicom)
Final Fantasy III(JPN/Famicom)
Final Fantasy IV(JPN/Super Famicom) -> Final Fantasy II(US/SNES)
Final Fantasy V(JPN/Super Famicom)
Final Fantasy VI(JPN/Super Famicom) -> Final Fantasy III(US/SNES)

Not long after FFVII became a fanboy favourite everywhere in the world, Square released most of the series in America and Europe, complete with the correct numbering scheme, as ports on PS1. So, FFVI is often called FFIII, but there is also a real FFIII which was on the Famicom, but which the US never saw, but which will be out on the DS at some point, if all goes well.

The short of it is: Final Fantasy VI was the third Final Fantasy released in the US originally (II, III and V were skipped), and being the third one out in the US at the time, they called it Final Fantasy III.

Basically, Squaresoft thought it wouldn't sell if they used the actual numbering because we stupid Americans wouldn't be able to figure things out, so they changed it and made things much more confusing than it should be.

The was the real II, abeit a remade one. And FF6 was labeled FFIII in the U.S., not II. FF4 was the one released as FFII
