View Full Version : EVANGELION (animated not live action!) movies on the way

From Cinescape.com -
"According to Variety, Gainax is planing to produce four movies based on the EVANGELION TV series.
The EVANGELION series is about teenagers who pilot huge robot warriors against invading aliens while struggling with the issues of adolescence.
The first three films will borrow some images from the TV show, but with new backgrounds and soundtracks. The stories of the third and fourth will be brand-new, in response to the many fans who were dissatisfied with the ending of the two EVANGELION pics directed by Hideaki Anno and released in 1997.
The first, helmed by Shinji Higuchi, will be released in July, the second in January and the third and fourth on a double bill in June 2008. The films will be distributed by Klockworx."

I feel mixxed about this. I am happy to see more Evangelion and maybe a good endding for Shinji and crew (at long last) but I hope thier making it to continue telling a story and just for the yen/$. Thats my two cents.

Is GAINAX bankrupt again?

Be afraid. Be very afraid. I hate making unilateral statements but this one needs to be made. Any Evangelion movie or TV show NOT overseen by Anno is doomed.
That show became a classic because of Anno's personal conflicts which translated to the screen. If someone else is helming it, Evangelion can only be a pale shadow of itself. Or just a ploy to wring more money out of consumers by usuing the Evangelion name.
I hope this project dies before it starts.

Hideaki Anno will write the scenario for the first movie and will be the general director and manager for the entire project. Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct the movies while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will provide character designs and Ikuto Yamashita will provide mechanical designs. Shinji Higuchi will provide storyboards for the first movie.
Khara, a new studio that shares office space with Gainax, was recently set up and is seeking production staff to work on Anno's new project.
sauce (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=9464)
The main producers and "executive staff" are all GAINAX and all worked on the original Eva animations. Khara is an art studio working with GAINAX on the project, to what extent I don't know. As far as I know, it's a GAINAX project.

He's in charge of the entire project. He's still in charge of the entire ordeal and has been since the TV series came out 10 years ago.
Like I asked, "Is GAINAX bankrupt again?"; new Eva 10th Anniversary releases are on their way and now we have four new films to add to the library. To answer my own question, I am leaning heavily towards "Yes."

No, Gainax is just plotting something...who are they trying to fool? they clearly have been reading "fanfics" for the plot of their movies..but then again they have all the right to use the "fanfics" plot....be very afraid..expect to see a kaworu being turned in to a girl :P literaly.. with Shinji the same thing..

I still think it's valid. While there are plenty of people who are shouting "Yay! More Eva!", there are now some people who enjoyed the original series who are starting to turn to the "Enough is enough" outlook.
Like Desslock, I'll pick them up for a rental but unless the films are a complete change from absolutely everything I despised about the original TV Series and first two films, then I can't imagine putting any more money down on them aside from the rental fees.

Not to speak for Desslock, 'cause he sure doesn't need any help on that account, but saying you aren't interested in a movie says a lot in and of itself. And even if that wasn't the case, there's value in posting to tell people that you don't care what they have to say.

of a worldview steeped in mystery, but this time it looks like those
types of elements will be kept to a minimum.

Yep, because I still hold out hope that there's one marketing person down at ADV or GAINAX that keeps up with the current buzz on their projects. And I don't want that buzz to be composed solely of "YAY!!! MORE EVA!! OMGBBQ!!!1!" I'd like there to be a small but persistent note of "Please let this title rest."
The folks milking this title are shooting themselves in their long-term feet, in my opinion. Titles like Cutey Honey or Gigantor get revived for the kitsch/retro value. Evangelion will never have a revival because they won't retire it. They're just gonna keep pumping out new EVA crap until the fanbase is so sick of the title being pimped that they're gonna walk away from it. And when that happens, it'll be dead to everyone but the fanboys too rabid to know any better.
They need to just completely retire this title and let it sit for 10-15 years. No new releases, no hype, no nothing. Let Anno walk away until he has some fresh ideas, let the public walk away and get some distance on what's been done - THEN come back with a substantial new body of original work on a full budget.
...techniques such as intentionally scattering
difficult to understand phrases to create uncertainty...
Can we sticky this quote in the EVA forum? I think it'd be a nice anchor to reality when people maintain that every single meaning of every single phrase is somehow thematically significant. ^_^

Add in hot/cute stuff like that & I'm sold!
Much like Gundam_Warrior I have mixed feelings about this. I'm sure I'll watch it, I could even like it better than the TV series if they actually make the characters more likable. At the same time it feels like a gimmick to get rich on the Evangelion popularity. I mean Anno already made D&R & EOE to add to the series, wasn't that enough? Now we need more?

Glad to see I'm not alone. The only thing I really want is the character Shinji to be happy for once. I want him to recognize that he doesn’t have to care about other people opinions to make him important.
Another minor gripe I had about End of Eva is that we really never got a solid ending on the other kids: Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari. It may be just important to me but I think they were shown enough in the series to show what happened to them.
As a fanboy I would prey for the return of Misato. :P And another fanboy note: I would love to see Unit 4 put into the films somehow. I look at the figure everyday in my action figure collection and say "What would it be like if this Unit was in the series?".
Sorry this was a very random post.

According to those Roman numerals, that would make her/it the 20th angel (I wonder what is the 19th). And that would make her related to Kaworu Nagisa: The Angel of Yaoi Bishouneness.
I seriously say that Evangelion needs no more telling outside of fanfiction...

I think you missed the point. He isn't depressed because he's reliant on other people's opinions of him it's the other way around. His lack of emotional development due to absent parents is why he is depressed and he tries to combat this by seeking praise from others.

If the cast of Evangelion was happy, well adjusted and comfortable with their places in the world, wouldn't that pretty much wreck the theme of the show?
Ahab could say, "Don't worry about that white whale, boys; we're bound to run into him again sometime..." but then Moby **** wouldn't have made a lot of sense, would it?

Actualy XX symbolizes The X chromossome "X2" for short...Angel evil female chromossome whatever Gainax put it....
When this statues appeared last year "I think" everbody was praying for an evangelion sequal..it didnt turn out..now we have 4 movies....makes you wonder if this isnt a marketing technique...Gainax are "pros" in that.. you know :P "Forbiden fusion" they said. To me, the sounds like a 4-part OVA side story to the series. Kind of a, “this is the stuff that went on while you were watching the series” kind of deal, (or to quote Reichu, “the Eva you don’t see”).
I like the fact that Gainax is doing something that is the antithesis to current anime just to see something a little different.

We all know Kaworu wanted to have some good ol' fun with Shinji. ^_- The question will be .. where? I vote for the public bath. WARNING, MY REPLY IS FILLED WITH SPOILERS
The first three films will borrow some images from the TV show, but with new backgrounds and soundtracks.
I don't know what this means? Is this like the recap thing that came with Death & Rebirth? Ehh, i've no interests in that.
The stories of the third and fourth will be brand-new, in response to the many fans who were dissatisfied with the ending of the two EVANGELION pics directed by Hideaki Anno and released in 1997.
Woo hoo. I don't mind getting new Eva stuff... but is this yet another alternate ending? I hope not. Well, thats not true. I'm buying those two regardless. But still, ehhh... i'd prefer a director commentary track for the last two episodes and End of Eva over yet another alternate ending. The first ending was Rei acting like Komami Chidori from Full Metal Panic and had me feeling overall positive. Fans were upset for Anno came back and killed off everyone and left Shinji choking out Asuka on a desserted planet... how is he gonna react now?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebuild_of_Evangelion
I just went there and got a kinda different description of this project. I'm actually happy about it. I always thought it would be cool if they kinda re-envisioned the Evangelion show. Like maybe change up certain characters/personalities/events and leave others the same. Like if Shinji had the personality of Asuka (this is purely an example), how would he have reacted to the events that took place in the show. That'd be cool to me. You don't rehash anything, but at the same time its very familiar and cozy.

was always unhappy with the ending of the movie, and he has finaly decided. He also said that GG may be used.
WHY MAKING NEW EVANGELION?
the reason for this new eva movie was aparently caused, has the New type Magazine said, that Hideaki Anno cried with emotion when he reviewed Evangelion again, this may be one of the reasons.
About the new character....there is nothing more about "IT"....I have no idea.
The rest, is old news....

So, Anno was always unhappy with the ending, eh?... I could have sworn that... er...
I'd actually really like to see the Arka ending. I'd still like to be able to choose which one I consider canon, but if this involves the original pitched ending, I'm definitely going to be interested.

A Promised Land and 12 Angels descending from the Moon? Is that even compatible with the final scenario? (Although they arguably make a reference back to the idea of multiple Angels attacking at once, if one accepts the premise that Armisael attempts to resurrect the dead in #23'.)
I'll have to do good translations of the original final episode synopses later for the hell of it... (The current ones blow.)
I can almost see a more down-to-earth version of EoE (or Magokoro, anyway...), with less emphasis on convoluted mumbo-jumbo and more on the harder sci-fi aspects, like the FAR*, their nifty technology, uber-beings, artificial evolution, alternate realms of existence [LCL Sea, e.g.], and so on.
* And it could possibly be said that two of their people are still with us.

Now..."grins" the first 3 movies will use old scenes from eva.....a slight change aproximately 1\3 in the characters and backgound...not counting new scenes, A NEW CHARACTER and some REVELATION OF THE MYSTERIES.. the plotline will ocur between episode 1 and 24..and it WONT BE A REMAKE but a "new" evangelion...
the reason for this new eva movie was aparently caused, has the New type Magazine said, that Hideaki Anno cried with emotion when he reviewed Evangelion again, this may be one of the reasons.
I'm excited. I cried with emotion when I saw EoE too. I thought it was really beautiful. I hope he doesn't change his style too much, it was absolutely amazing. I'll be very sad if the characters are revised too much. I always thought that they fit together incredibly, and you could see how one related to the other and back across the board. Even down to Kensuke.
Hopefully, this is being done both as a mechanism to make the events and characters of Evangelion more accessible to people who don't spend their lives on forums. It certainly could use some remedial work. For example... The Lance of Longinus, Ritsuko's dad and the complex or lack thereof she had about her mother ( I think she had a "father" complex like Misato>>> Gendo), fleshing the development of Rei's emotions and her interactions with NERV staff... Like I said, I'm excited.

For example... Ritsuko's dad
Shin-seiki once suggested that Ritchan's dad might have just been a syringe. (He commented that Sadamoto's scenario for Asuka seemed more appropro for Ritsuko.)
Alright, I blazed through the last batch of episode synopses, just for fun. Not particularly refined, but whatever.
Episode #23: "The Human Instrumentality Project"
The secrets of Eva and the Human Instrumentality Project unveiled, along with the truth behind Ritsuko and [Shinji's] father's goals.
Episode #24: "Now, the Promised Time"
Rei breaks down. Her secrets are revealed. Finally awakened, the 12 strongest Apostolos descend from the Moon. Both Eva Unit 06 and the American continent vanish completely. Humans acknowledge their helplessness in the face of the Apostolos' crushing power. The promised time, when people will return to nothing, approaches. A human drama in the depths of despair.
["Rei breaks down": "breaks down" can also be "collapses" or "be defeated". "Vanish": "evaporate" or "disappear without explanation".]
Episode #25: "Arka, the Promised Land"
The laboratory holds the ancient ruins of Arka, which have become key. In order to stop the 12 Apostolos, the United Nations' head members annul the Human Instrumentality Project and decide upon the Apostolos' destruction. [Shinji's] father objects. Shinji and the others stay at the laboratory for Rei. A drama of people conflicting over incongruous objectives.
Final Episode: "The Only Neat Thing to Do"
On the stage of the destroyed laboratory, all mysteries and drama are concluded. The denouement.
Somebody needs to translate the whole Proposal. (Preferably not me.)

Out of cuiousity, is "Eva-06 and the American continent vanish" what eventually became the Eva-04 Nevada incident, or are they two seperate things? If it is, it might be interesting to find out what roles Evas 04 and 05 had (if any) in the proposal.
Also interesting how the setup for the end of the series is completely different (mass Angel attack instead of Instrumentality), but it's still a "people drama" as they describe it.

I think they're supposed to be two separate things. I have the old (bad) translation and Eva-04 isn't mentioned in it.
Eva-03 seems to have a similar fate to the one of the tv series itself, though it mentions something about "Shinji's decision". Could he have decided to fight against Eva-03 in the original storyline?
The Dummy plug isn't mentioned. In fact, in the description of episode 02, it says that "Shinji's will defeated the apostolo". So, maybe, initially, the Evas weren't supposed to have a real conscience, and it was all due to the pilot.
If it is, it might be interesting to find out what roles Evas 04 and 05 had (if any) in the proposal.
In episode 20, Eva-05 is sent from Germany to Nerv, but that's it. Nothing about a pilot is mentioned, though Asuka was heavily wounded in the previous battle, so it might be Unit-02's replacement for her.

@NeonZ: There are some notes about the other Evas in the rest of the Proposal (the episode synopses are a small part). Indeed, nothing about Dummy Plugs/Systems. The Berserk phenomenon gets its own page, so I take that as meaning, yes, the Evas were sentient "back then", too.

Does it say anything about Unit-05 that isn't mentioned in the episode summary?

Ok... I vaguely recall recall reading something about how Eva-01's arm was supposed to move in the first episode because of Shinji, not by its own will. I guess that was just a rumor. That "Shinji's will defeated the Apostolo" comment also seemed to go in a similar direction as that vague recollection.
The Berserker state is mentioned in the translation of the summary, "Eva's true power", but it is then followed by the "Shinji's will" comment, which really doesn't fit with the final version of the berserker state.
In any case, are there any scans of the untranslated proposal online?
Where was it published? ( I've asked this before- but I forgot the answer...)

I'm not going to put much stock into rumors or the dodgy translations; I must see the truth with my own eyes. ;)

It was published in Newtype 100% Collection -- REALLY tiny-like. (In some cases the kanji are so hard to make out I actually do Google searches for phrases in the hopes that Japanese fan pages cite them. It seems to work.) You can probably get a full-size version on Yahoo! JP Auctions for some abominable amount of money that I don't have, but I don't feel like looking right now. As for scans, there is a full scan of the German version of Newtype 100% floating around, but they are completely unusable in the case of the Proposal. I do uber-high res scans from my own thoroughly-molested copy of the book.
I spent this morning poking at a page about Evas, with brief descriptions of the units at the bottom. Didn't get to that part yet, but, for your amusement, here's the top half.
"Evangelion's Features"
Because of its flexible artificial musculature composed of metal, human-like movement is rendered possible. Its actional response time may also be manipulated at will.
The main unit is the basic body, manufactured from a skeletal framework and artificial muscles. Various versatile armor suits, special equipment, etc., can be equipped onto this, enabling Eva's multi-purpose utilization. Put simply, they are giant robots, wearing helmets and equipped with gloves.
Usually they operate by means of an electric energy supply provided via cable. However, in the event of emergency, they switch to an internal supply. At the same time, this has a weakness in that, due to a problem with storage capacity, Eva can only operate for approximately 1 minute on internal power.
They are improved after EVA-01 and installed with a Positron Engine, but all sorts of problems remain, as this system is also unstable.
Unfortunately, unaided flight is impossible.
About the only thing that got through essentially unchanged is the stuff on cable power vs. internal power. The Eva under the armor really did look quite different at this point in the game (there's an Anno/Sadamoto illustration you may have seen). Since the Evas here don't seem to be living scions of Adam like they are in the final, it makes me kinda wonder.

Although I know practically no Japanese whatsoever except for a few titles that I recognize ("ボボボーボ・ボーボボ") and phrases I picked up from hearing them said in anime over and over ("Gomen nasai"), I did notice the number 2016 (I'm assuming it's the year) mentioned at the bottom of the page of the Proposal's "Features of Evangelion" page. Does that part refer to the realization of the Instrumentality Project?
Also, about the Eva's features: though it does appear to be different from what they turned out to really be in the anime, it may be that those specs are simply the non-classified information, or lies supplied by NERV to hide what they really are. Or Anno might have changed his mind half-way and didn't want them to be robots anymore.

No. :P
Furthermore, within the show there are multiple Evangelion homotypes.
(As per the above at points after episode #01.)
Unit 00 Prototype -- Partially damaged in its first combat. The unit is kept on freeze.
Unit 01 Test Type -- Successfully activated for the first time in Episode #01, upon which it was immediately used in actual combat.
Unit 02 Experimental Type -- Currently being transported from Sasebo via aircraft carrier in the care of the U.N. Army. The final adjustments have been taken care of.
Unit 03 Experimental Type -- Currently being constructed at an unspecified site in America.
Unit 04 Test Type -- Missing number. As it disappeared in an explosion incident, its construction has been discontinued.
Unit 05 Experimental Type -- Currently being constructed at an unspecified site in Germany.
Unit 06 Mass Production Model -- Construction is scheduled to begin in 2016, also in Germany.
Nevermind, that really doesn't help very much.
