Ok. So I am on the last disc of Gundam Seed...about to finish it! :P YAY! But there is one thing that isn't clear to me. Why does Flay have a change of heart about Kira after her father is killed and she finds out that Kira is friends with the pilot of the Aegis (Athrun)?! At first I thought she just went crazy...but now when I re-watch it I wonder if she had any other motives?
And when she starts hitting on him, preferring Kira over Sai...is she serious?! And then later she admits to not ever having feelings for Kira in the first place...so wtf?! She is so insane and worthless...She confuses the crap out of me!
Anybody with input/explanations/opinions? I would greatly appreciate it! If any of these questions are answered in the last disc or in Gundam Seed Destiny though...don't tell me! I'll find out soon! ;) Haha. Thanks!

Well, it isn't a spoiler for you, but I'll put the tags in just in case.
The reason Fllay pretty went crazy because ZAFT destroyed the ship her father was in. And ZAFT is made up of Coordinators, Kira is a first-generation Coordinator; see where that adds up? And finding out that he was best friends with an active soldier of ZAFT would definately piss her off. I think she knew that Kira was crushing on her and decided to mess with his head and controlling him by acting like she returned his affections. That's why Fllay is so hated throughout the Gundam SEED fandom.

Flay's feelings drastically changed for the worse because in that twisted mind of hers, she undoubtedly held Kira (instead of ZAFT) responsible for her father's untimely demise.

No, she never harbored any good intentions to begin with. She hated coordinators, plain and simple.

Thanks for the input! I am re-watching the entire show and right now I'm watching Ep. 15 when Flay is nursing Kira back to health and she just said to herself : "Kira. You're to fight, and fight, and fight until you die. It's the only way I will forgive you." HMMM. And now she's smiling while Kira is breaking down and sobbing...So that combined with your input definitely clears up my confusion! She is such a bitch though. I hate her so much!!! I haven't seen GSDestiny yet and have only read alittle bit about it, but I'm getting the feeling that she'll join with the Blue Cosmo's? Just a hunch. ;)

She sort of explains it to Kira at the very end, that she was wrong or something. You should just watch it all before asking questions.

She wanted to use Kira. Ya, she was pretty ****ed up. Her character is cynical.

There was a time when I hated Fllay. Somewhere along the line, she became one of my new favorites though. I like characters who aren't really evil, just emotionally screwed up. Fllay had psychotic thoughts indeed, but did eventually reedeem herself. She did somehow devleop genuine feelings for Kira. I'm not really sure myself how that came to be because I didn't study her character or anything, but I just except it as the truth.
Fllay bashers (or any bashers at all) drive me crazy. I say that if someone wants to hate a character, they can feel free to do so. They should just be quiet about it or be willing to back it up.

Flay is hot(I don't blame Kira) & she made the show more interesting because she went crazy. And in the second half of the show she changed & even admitted how wrong she was. So I forgave her.

Meh don't hate Flay, sure she was an annoying bitch during the 2nd quarter of the series but she definately changed at the end.

I wouldn't really agree that Flay jumping off the deep end made the show more interesting, but I think it gave her character a lot more depth, which most of the characters in the Gundam SEED cast were severely lacking. Now, what really pissed me off about Flay didn't come until the very end when they tried to make her a Lalah Sun type of character.
As far as people going completely bat-**** in SEED, the girl who damn near knifed Dearka (whose name I obviously cannot remember) was certainly my favorite. So few scenes in Gundam SEED had me excited and I think that was definately the number one scene.

Mirailla Haww. She's one of the few characters in SEED that I loved and was one of the few who the creators bothered to have a really good character depth.

Which is a shame because they could have transferred probably 20% of that depth from either Flay or Mirailla to either of the main characters and the series might have been a lot more enjoyable.

Fllay is the bitchiest character in the entire show. She's a psycho. She's emotionally unstable. She has no clue what she wants, and her weakness is disgusting. Her use of Kira was just evil, as are her feelings about coordinators. Her change of heart doesn't matter, she did more harm than can be instantly forgiven. On top of it all, she was the most worthless member of the crew, and all she did was sit in her room and cry, and complain. How's that for backing up my reasons.
She's a rich bitch. I know exactly her type in real life. All she cares about is herself.

I haven't seen the very end of the show yet but I don't even need to see Flay's change of heart and hear her apology. I already know it won't compensate for what she said and did to Kira. And how detrimental and worthless she was to the entire crew of the Archangel. I've already given valid reasons why I hate her and think she's crazy, but even if I didn't...I still think people are entitled to voice their opinions whenever they want.

What you said actually didn't bother me so much. I've just seen so many rabid Fllay bashers that I was driven to react. I apologize.

I think that Athrun or Kira had alot of character depth, it's just that SEED fail to execute a good story along with it. That's why I get so pissed that I wasted a weekend to watch it all. You have all these great characters and fail to use them properly or at least use cliched storylines that been done to death. SEED is a strong case good characters but bad storyline. If it wasn't for the cool characters, SEED would've been a sunken ship already...

I think Kira and Athrun were good foils against each other and their relationship played well throughout the series but individually, most of the characterizations were as flat and unoriginal as the animation and Hirai Hisashi's designs.
I won't necesasrily say the story itself is bad, but more that it was incredibly poorly executed. It tried to use the formula from the original Mobile Suit Gundam but there were many nuances from the original series that failed to be captured in the remake, one of them being how characters like Bright went from the duty-bound, inexpereinced officer to struggling with the weight of being a senior officer while trying to maintain some sort of humanity, or how many of the other pilots like Kai went from a snivelling coward to doing what it takes to be dependable or how Hayato, like many of the others of the White Base crew, had to grow up right there on the battlefield to make it out alive. These are all background and support characters whose counterparts in SEED never grew over the story, save for maybe a couple of singular instances. The story focuses on Athrun, Kira, Flay, and Lux (Lachs, or however Bandai wants her name spelled) and leaves a lot of characters that make it through the series pretty static in the background, where as in the original, Tomino did have the background characters change marginally.
If SEED's sole intention was to introduce Gundam to a brand new fanbase who hadn't grown up with it in some form or fashion, then I'll admit, it was a complete and total success; however, I don't think the people who were at the helm of the project, such as Fukuda, are purely only the martketing types. I may not agree with Fukuda's vision or message within SEED but that doesn't necessarily mean he is simply a marketing tool.

Lux (Lachs, or however Bandai wants her name spelled)
It's "Lacus" in the Bandai dub and subs.

I agree that there could be some improvements made to SEED's character and story development, and I would've liked to see more focus on background characters...But overall I think the writers did a great job keeping you entertained and interested enough to want to know what happens next.

It was supposed to be "the Gundam series of the 21st Century" and they admit of taking plotlines from all the more popular Gundam series in the show, whereas they should've done something different. True that they should've focused more on the secondary characters and the background of the war though. I remeber posting over a year ago about Gundam SEED vs Gundam Wing and many people said that Gundam SEED was better because it killed characters, but they failed to realize that the only notable character who was killed was Tolle. Nicol doesn't count because although he piloted one of the Gundams, he wasn't more than Random Pilot #5 in terms of characterization and that whole epsiode about him was pretty predictable that he was going to die.
And no one could argue that Gundam SEED Destiny was a purely marketing tool. It was like to the Gundam SEED fans as FF7: Advent Children was to FF7 fans: more of our favorite characters, but a more crappier story. I guess Fukuda was trying to send a message, but he could've planned out the SEED saga more. It was trying to be too much like the original Gundam and it failed.

It was more like "To see what will happen next will be what I predicted.." to me. Me and my sis spent most of the episodes predicting what will happen next, and 8 out 10 times, we were right. Truthfully, I was hoping it would get better as it went on, but it never did. Sure it had it's moments but it's not worth the hype.

Ok. So I FINALLY finished the series last night :) and I saw Flay's message. So now actually hearing her apology/admitting that she had been wrong...I still stick by what I said before. She never did one positive thing during the entire series! She did add depth...I will give her that, but always in a negetive way! So it's really hard for me to forget all the terrible things she did and accept her change of heart at the end.
It also annoyed me when Kira was looking at Lacus and Flay's face kept flashing instead. Grrr! How dare he...!
Overall, I am glad that Flay admitted she was wrong. The ending was better and more complete with her realizing how crazy she was acting the whole time. I guess a late apology is better than none at all!

O rly? What about Rau, Flay, and Patrick Zala? Also Natarle and Azeral.

Doesn't really get any better with Destiny. Especially when Kira and Lacus don't kiss FRICKEN ONCE! during the entirty of the 50 episodes...
