Hey its been 20 minutes, and no one has made a thread yet?
I'm suprised at the fact they used Zanpaktou (instead of Soul Slayer) and Soul Society (instead of spirit world). The voices actually sounded fitting when I heard them fully through. I dont even remember hollows being able to speak, even so thought they needed to be more gruff. Overall, good job Viz, for once.

Sounded fine to me, the main cast anyway. I love Michelle Ruff as Rukia the most.
Of course, theres also the fact that sometimes it takes a while for the VA's to adjust. I will also have to get used to the voices because it is awkward when your so used to the Japanese voices.
Overall, a pretty good start. I'm very thankful Ocean Group diddn't dub this and use Richard Cox to voice Ichigo....
PS- ANN has Michelle Ruff credited as Yuzu, but I really don't think thats true after all.

I really enjoyed the dub and I was really surprised they kept everything in (Including those you've stated) and it was really cool to see * ~ Asterisk on AS. Also it was really clean and neat next to the fansubs I'm so used too. Overall great so far.
EDIT: I thought Rukia voice was spot on, Not so much Ichigo though. I'll just have to see how he does his famous battle cry.

I was sad about "Zanpaktou" instead of Soul Slayer, and I liked that they kept Soul Society. HOWEVER did anyone notice that they kept on saying "the" Soul Society? That ticked me off.
Rukia's voice = :(
Ichigo's voice = meh
They seem to be keeping all the people's names the same, though, which is gooooood :)
I just realized it's going to take forever (at least 5 months or so) to get to the good Soul Society episodes :(

I'm glad they used "Soul Reaper". I just think it sounds the most cool.

Yeah, that was nice. Its funny they sped through Trinity Blood's OP/ED, and showed Bleach's in its entirety.
Judging by the preview, Kon's voice seems crazy/not good.

I agree with that. Which is why I will still watch it with the Japanese Dialog when I get the DVDs.
I think they did a alright job with the English dub. I liked Ichigo's voice. I will have to get use to Rukia's voice I think Michelle Ruff did a good job though. I didn't like Kon's voice at the very end though.
It is going to take forever for them to catch up to where the Fansubs are now.

I also watched the Bleach Dub earlier. I thought the voices were great. Ichigos voice wasnt exactly right, but I think Johnny Bosch will get it right soon. Rukia's voice was excellent, and Kon's voice sounded crazy but it was ok. Thankfully the voices didnt turn out like Naruto which I am glad.

the dubbing was actually pretty good im shocked and amazed they did it nicely, i was really expecting some crap like what they did wth Naruto. Michelle Ruff sounded pretty close to Fumiko Orikasa's voice give or take a pitch or two but she got the job done . And Johnny Yong Bosch's voice matched Ichigo perfectly in my opinion, well folks it may look like we actually have a very good dub on our hands right now... lets see how long it'll last. my rating for the dub ...... 8.5 / 10

Johnny Bosch is doing Ichigo? Didn't know that. He did a pretty good Ichigo. The VA for his dad got it spot on too.
Anyway, Rukia's voice seemed off to me because it wasn't... angry enough, I guess. She just sounded too nice right off the bat. Either that or I've just gotten used to her sounding like a young boy.:P
Also, there's nothing wrong with Naruto's VAs. They fit pretty well to me.
The one voice which seemed TOTALLY off to me was that ghost girl's voice.:S She looks like she's around 9 or something, but she sounded like a grown woman.O_O That was the major one that got my attention.

Keeping the Zanpaktou instead of Soul Slayer is probably a good a idea because it is a type of sword. It'd be like translating odachi, daito and kodachi which are also types of swords.

I know. I wasn't really paying attencion at that part but when I heard her speak I was like Jesus, how old is she?
I just hope the do Chad and Ishida good. I'll most likely hate Inoue anyway.

To each their own with this one. I'm actually kind of suprised with the mostly-positive reviews I'm seeing online. Though a few reviews are panning it, most are giving it average to 'very high / excellent' favors, which is nice to see, considering what I've been witnessing in chats and message boards in the past year (lots of dub-bashing).
As for myself, I've watched my share of anime on TV exclusively and not buying DVDs/VHS. (Some had no home video release whatsoever). There's no comparison to my ears...Bleach...just by its first episode alone, is easily the best made-for-TV aired English dub my ears have heard in my 10 years of anime fandom. Again, I'm only comparing this to "TV-AIRED" anime, not 'straight-to-DVD' material. (Although Bleach will be getting a subsequent DVD issuing soon, ala Naruto )
I had my doubt based off that 30-second teaser, but now that I've gotten a full 23-minute dose of Johnny's 'Ichigo'...he nailed what I had in my mind for the character (based off images and such....never watched the original Japanese)...a slightly 'street tough' guy, but there's also that inner 'softer' side to him that he pulled off well.
Being a fan of Michelle's work (Ai Yori Aoshi/AYA Enishi (as Aoi), Chobits (as Chii) and others), I was pulling for her to give me another good performance here as Rukia. This is a voice style of hers (a bit more low-key and dark....Chii and Aoi were more 'upbeat' styles) I've never heard before, and what I heard, I grew attatched to almost instantly. For me she stole the half-hour.
I missed Kon's voice...so I can't comment there yet. His voice seems to be the only 'downer' people are hinting at, but since he had a minor part in the first ep, it's a moot issue for now, and didn't detract from the other 22 1/2 minutes of greatness.
Even though I know what 'shinigami' means, this wouldn't have made any sense whatsoever to the mainstream anime-veiwing public, and really doesn't portray what Ichigo and Rukia 'really' are. They do not kill all...they only kill the souls possessed by evil. That and the manga author uses 'Soul Reaper' anyways, so this point is moot and should stay that way. Everything else, termnology-wise is good here. I'm not fluent in Japanese, but I know the basic vowel sounds, so to me, what I heard with pronounciations was nearly spot on, if not hitting the bullseye.
Best moment: Rukia's 'crappy drawings'. A 1000-some year old shinigami that draws like a 5 year old. Both real cute, and funny.
That OP is a very stark contrast to the darker themes I know this series will have. Has a '1970s-retro' vibe going, and the music (both OP and ED)...how I wish it could be domestically released. (Geneon, where are you...you guys usually put out soundtrack CDs)
Bleach is a keeper for me, and I'm snatching up the first volume DVD of this when it's released. I'd like to see how the Japanese compares to the otherwise, excellent performances in this dub.
I hope this quality keeps up as the VAs settle into their roles. Can't wait for next Saturday night for more Hollow-slaying action.

Overall, I'm impressed with the dub so far. I think both Ichigo's and Rukia's voices are pretty good. When I saw the promo, I didn't think Ichigo's voice was right at all, but after watching episode 1, I think Johnny will fill the role nicely. I agree that he captures both the "tough" and "soft" aspects of Ichigo rather well, and I'm sure he'll only get better. Liked how they say "Zanpakuto", but I really hate the "Soul Reaper" translation though. That just doesn't sound right. Shinigami = Deathgod, dangit! I guess they'll write "Soul Reaper" in the DVD subs too. Oh well. A minor annoyance I guess. Still, I'm elated to see my favorite anime officially makes its way here in the States. :)

I don't see it as a problem at all. My god, its not a big deal.
I guess it depends if it sounds right in the English language.
Another example:

The dub was fine. Why anime fans hate dubs so intensely, is beyond me. The quality of English VA's has improved dramatically over the past few years. The whole "sub vs. dub" argument needs to die already. Just sit back and enjoy the show....

I know it will be over a year or so before they even get up to 95, and then it will be up to 180 or so depending on how many episodes they are planning on making. Which is why I will still download the fansubs as well.
I'm still buying the DVDs though to show my support. ^_^

I am glad they kept the ED for Bleach. Rie Fu's "Life is Like a boat" is an excellent song, and hopefully Cartoon Network will leave the EDs for the rest of the series.
I don't think the dub is the best I've heard yet, but it has a possibility of being the best. I think by the time we get to the Soul Society arc we will see if the dub holds and maybe....

Great dub. Now Bleach will be loved by everyone.

Assuming they are still awake when it comes on. I really hope Bleach does well, because it really should. There is no reason Bleach shouldn't be popular and successful on Adult Swim. Unless AS screws up by not advertising it and putting it in a crappy timeslot.
Anyhow, I thought the dub was pretty good. Ichigo's voice is good, although it will take a some getting used to. Michelle Ruff is spot on as Rukia. Ichigo's sisters also have good dubs, but I'm iffy on the dad.
So far, this is probably Viz's best dub job to date. I hope they keep up the good work for the rest of the voices.
On a side note, why doesn't AS onscreen text translations (usually)? It happens a lot in Eureka Seven (signs and even episode titles remain untranslated) and Bleach contains translations for most of it (like Rukia's drawings and the stuff at the end) but they didn't translate the stuff on the TV news report.

Alright, I'm going to say this only as a public service to those poor poor people who've yet to see the subbed version of this anime.
I have scars on my ears where I tried to tear them off of my head, and this post will explain why, and then I'll disapear to let you all flame me in peice, cause I know how hard an anime fan takes being wrong.
So basically, you are admitting to trolling and flamebaiting? On the off chance that you actually come back, I'll respond to the rest of your post. And great job on assuming those of us praising the dub haven't seen it subbed.
Voices:
I didn't know thirteen year old boys are farther into puberty than I am at twenty one. And before you say, "It's hard to get kid voices from adult voice actors", watch Pokemon. The voice of Ash (Who's 11), sounds perfect, and it's done from an adult female. Rukia, who is my favorite character, sounds like a man doing a female's voice for Christ sakes.
I'm pretty sure Ichigo is 15, possibly 16. Rukia's voice is spot on. I'm sorry you are to ignorant to appreciate good dubbing.
Translation:
Oh wow, are you all serious? How is "Soul Reaper" a good word for Shinigami (Which DIRECTLY translates to the phrase "Death God". They can show the blood coming from Rukia's shoulder, but they can't say, "Death God"? I'm sick and tired of all these anime's becoming Dragon Ball Z right under people's noses. I'm surprised they didn't use sweat instead of blood!
The Soul Reaper translation is fine for various reasons that I don't feel like going into for someone like you. Oh, and go ahead and ignore all the terms that they left (and pronounced correctly!) in Japanese.
The openning and closing threw me off. I honostly expected to see Barney dancing with a bottle of soda around the corpse of the orriginal voice actors, laughing about how we can trash their material and have people FREAKING PRAISE THE WORK! Someone stop smoking crack long enough to understand the poor quality, VIZ CAN'T DUB! I'm tempted to buy a copy of the dubbed disk just so I can get the drugs YOU MORONS ARE SMOKING!
..... I thought you were talking about the opening and ending but then you go on about the dubbing, so I don't even know what this paragraph is supposed to be about. The left the opening and ending in Japanese and aired them in their entirety with subtitles. I don't know what more you could ask for in that regard.
(No cats were hurt in the making of this post, but by god if one of you ever challenge my godly word I'll smite thee with my ultimate wrath.)
Great, so now you have a god complex in addition to being an ignorant dub-hater. I'm cowering in fear of being "smite[d]" by your "ultimate wrath." Especially since you said you weren't coming back.
Oh and by the way, for those of you who liked Rukia's voice... If you weren't busy touching yourselves and killing kittens, maybe you'd notice how horrid the voice acting really was. Oh but one character was done perfectly... the Holllow! :naughty:
*sigh* and I really have to wonder: Why on earth did I respond to this troll and flame-baiter? The world may never know...

Two episodes into this, and I still can't find much wrong here. Orihime sounded just fine to my ears, nothing annoying about her. Seems like the life of a soul reaper is going to be a rough one for Ichigo....he's going to have to make choices that he may personally not like, or find wrong.
I'll give this another few episodes before deciding on keeping up with this show or dropping it. I'm just glad they didn't shove this towards Toonami (blood edits, more extreme violence edited), or that 4Kids (Major edits, episodes skipped, mismatched or just plain horrible voice acting) snagged it.....either scenario would have meant edits...moreso with the latter possibility. Thank goodness for that.
Remember, this could have turned out MUCH worse. It seems though, as with every popular series in the fansub/downloading world, there's that group of fans speaking out against their little series getting widespread exposure, and thus, being enjoyed by people like myself. Ah well. To each their own.

I finally watched this last night and I liked it. I thought the dub was probaly the best Viz has done for a series...and this is coming from someone who's only seen one episode in Japanese. I thought the voices seemed spot on for the lead characters. At least Johnny Bosch does a better job in this then as Renton. Though Michelle Ruff and Wendee Lee sound alike. Orihime is Eureka I think...

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with the Naruto dub, because, even though Naruto's voice in the first several episodes was rather spotty to my ears, it's otherwise better than what COULD have been done with that dub.
What other voices are in question (besides the obvious Naruto himself)?
Then again, after being only 2 episodes into Bleach, and finding this dub more 'natural' to my ears this soon ,whereas Naruto took me a longer time to like, that tells me that something is being done right with this dub.
Maybe having the blood intact helps too. The edits with Naruto in that regard are a little....odd (though I do understand why they need to do it, and is also not that big a deal to me if there's none).
Ah well, can't have everything the way we want it.

I started watching the sub of Bleach a while ago and although I only got through I think 2 episodes I really liked it. Even though I almost always prefer subs I would choosing watching something laying on the couch or on my bed on tv over sitting in a stiff chair staring at my computer any day. So naturally I got really excited when I heard Bleach was coming on adult swim. So far (3 eps in) I am very impressed with the dub. Like I said I wasn't too attched to the japanese voices since I'd only see two episodes, so the switch to english was virtually painless. What is the most pleasant suprise for me is that they kept the opening (asterisk by orange range) which is one of my favorite songs ^.^ I like Ichigos voice and Rukia's is pretty good. All in all i am very pleased and now I know I'm going to follow the series.

I think the old adage, "First impressions last a lifetime," applies here.
When the main character's voice sucks it's time to move on. I will not put up with hearing it almost every episode.
