Throughout the series, the Evangelions are constantly launched from within the Geofront (I assume) into Tokyo-3. Recently, I have been trying to figure out exactly how that process works. I have always thought that the launching bays were located somewhere below the NERV Headquarters building, and it seems that the elevators, except for a few slight diagonal movements here and there, go straight up. The problem with this theory is the fact that there is an open space of about a kilometer from the H.Q. Building to the ground surface.
After thinking on this for a moment, I came up with the idea that the launching bays could be at one of the extreme ends of the Geofront, and they might follow the Geofront's curve up towards the surface. However, I encountered several problems with this theory as well. First, when the progress of the launch elevators as they move towards the surface is shown on the NERV computer screens, they move almost straight up, with not enough sideways or diagonal movement to account for them following the curve of the Geofront. Secondly, when Eva-01 uses the launch bay to eject itself as well as Zeruel from NERV H.Q, the elevator shoots it out relatively close to the H.Q. Building. Therefore, it would seem to me that the elevator system is located very close to the middle of the Geofront, underneath the H.Q. Building itself.
Another idea that I came up with was that the launch bays might be located above the Geofront but below Tokyo-3. Unfortunatly, this theory does not work for numerous reasons. First, the Evangelions are sometimes launched directly into the Geofront, and unless they were to follow the Geofront curve all the way down, and then to pass through the Geofront shell and into the ground beneath NERV H.Q. before popping up, the Evangelions would have to be dropped from the top of the Geofront to the ground below, which we never see happen. It also seems to me that the elevator shafts would be much shorter if they were located directly under Tokyo-3 and above the Geofront.
If anyone could provide insight to this problem, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
