I am pretty sure there are deaf people in Japan. Six years ago at Gallaudet University, there was a deaf Japanese who must be about 40 years old in my ASL class. But I didn't talk with him much except when it's part of our seatwork, and I could barely understand what he was signing because his sign language is apparently different from mine.

I always wonder how the Deaf Japanese manage their activities and lead their lives in the society.

I also wonder how the Hearing Japanese people perceives the deaf.

Are there also any institutes or schools for the deaf in Japan?

Because Japan doesn't have an equivalent to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) which protects and guarantees the rights of Deaf Americans?

Neither does Philippines. I really wish all countries including Philippines would have laws favoring disabled people's rights similar to ADA.

Sign language is prohibited in the deaf school, They learn the method of the pronunciation. and student become only Japanese speaker, not listener.

Sign language all over the world is different like this.

Don't assume that, there are Deaf people all over the world. There are deaf people in Japan.
Anyways, I'm from Canada and I am deaf myself as well. My school in Ontario (a province in Canada) played host to a several deaf Japanese people observing my school educational system last April/May. I haven't heard the full story yet but from what my best friend (the one who was responsible for the guests) told me that they were thinking about setting up a deaf school in Japan that enables the deaf students to learn JSL and Japanese language as like I learn English and ASL (American Sign Language) in my school. I can't be too sure of it but it's a high possibility of a new Deaf school in Japan.

I think ablo tried to be sarcastic, but apparently failed rather miserably.
There are deaf people among all walks of life. One of the nuances of deafness is it is not a visible handicap such as other handicaps. You could walk by someone on the street and never realize they are deaf.

When I went to Tsukuba Daigaku for a year I found out that there is a very largely populated deaf school in the area - Special Needs Education School for the Deaf,University of Tsukuba

At the time, there were many arrangements made for deaf people in the area. Every sidewalk had a path of raised bumps on it so people would always know where the sidewalk ends. Also, every pedestrian light would beep to indicate which way was green. I have seen such things occasionally in American cities, but these were found throughout the whole area.

I fail to see how this would help a deaf person ;).

Because pornography is more visual in nature than auditory...although you do miss out on the super sweet 70's funk soundtracks.

Schuldich, i see. thank you for the link and information.

GreatNeko, Yes I know there may be a Deaf community in Japan but I was asking how the deaf people live in the Japanese society and what kinds of perceptions/attitudes the hearing Japanese people hold towards the Deaf. I mean whether they are prejudiced or not towards the Deaf.

I would like to know about Japan's attitudes towards the Deaf before I think of planning a trip to Japan.
