At EB games, thwy had a deal on 3 used DVD's for 20. So of course, I bought a crapload of used anime, even though it was used and some of the packeging was messed up. Do anyof you go for these deals, or only buy new?

I go with internet holiday sales, ebay, and amazon.

I only buy new, I refuse to buy used. Still, I don't pay the usual MSRP, I buy them from legitimate online sites typically for $10 less than I would in say Best Buy.

Same goes for me as well. Though if I want something bad enough I don't wait for holiday sales.

I have bought used, but only if it's something that I know I'll have a hard time finding elsewhere. Usually I try to find it cheap but still new. Some stores around here have discount bins where dvds are marked down considerably, but still brand new. I'm a sucker for those.

For the most part I buy new, but I have bought a handful of things used. Never had a problem playing the used discs and besides a few small rips in a couple covers, the packaging is perfect.

I've bought some of the used anime dvds in game stores. I don't mind buying them that way as long as the packaging is decent and it plays well. You can get some very good deals when buying used, so I do it as often as I can.

I buy used sometimes like when stuff is just to hard to pass on.

Like I bought the Ah! My Goddess movie , The three two disc Martian Successor Nadesico Essential Anime sets , and the two disc New Cutey Honey Essential Anime set for $30.00 used a bit back.

Or like another time I bought Lady Death , Yu Yu Hakusho - Poltergeist Report , and Steamboy for $12.00 for all three this was two weeks after Steamboy had be released on DVD here.

I've never found anything wrong with a disc itself some covers may be damaged but' I've gotten new disc with damaged covers before.

There's really no place in my area I'm willing to go to that sells used anime, although Fry's sometimes releases old Bandai DVDs for $7 a pop. This was why I bought all 3 volumes of Saber Marionette J.

Of Course. I scour the web and local places for deals. I have no quams on used if the discs are packaging are still okay.

I always try to find deals, and I have no problem at all buying used, I've even gotten some really awesome deals, like GTO box 1 with vol.1-5 for $25 (which as far as I know the box is OOP). I've never had any problems with the used disks I buy. Often times it looks like they were maybe watched once then sold back (apparently some people never heard of renting, but hey thier loss my gain) I also shop online which is usually a good deal cheaper then places like BB, unless you can find a title that they mislabel at the wrong price :) that's always fun.

I only buy new, and I only buy deals. If I can't find a good price on a box set, I don't buy the series at all. There are several series I do not own because of this, but... oh, well. There are plenty of other things to own and watch.

Man, I love that. I've gotten a couple of titles that way. :)

i've bought a lot used, mainly from ebay, but only if in like new condition w/ everything included and can save a meaningful amount (~$7+). never paid full srp either, and rarely buy new in retail stores except for BB and such when they have those sweet deals. since i'm such a big collector and the hobby is expensive, i don't mind cutting some corners to keep it growing. i would say at least 10% of my collection was bought 2nd hand.

I only buy used DVD's if there's no other choice (like really really rare ones). I'm a bargain hunter and I always know where to find new and cheap DVD's for less than $10, but there are some series where I just can't wait and but them as soon as I see them on the shelves (I don't do that now). I didn't pay much for my collection since about half of my collection (singles, not boxsets) is less than $10 a DVD, and most of my artboxes (w/ volume 1) cost me less than $15.

I buy new anime DVDs most of the time.

The only time I would consider buying used is if the series I wanted was out of production and hard to find.

I buy all my DVDs new. I never trust used items, because taking risks with my money is absurd. I also tend to surf the web for sales and such.

I buy either used or new, always looking for the best deals.

I know buying used or on ebay means the licensers(sp?) dont see any $, but when you go to a Movie store and see Genshiken Vol 1 new for $24.99 or used (no scratches) for $6.99, the choice seems kinda obvious, and since im replacing DVD-R's, they wouldnt see any $ anyways.

Unless if it is really old and it can only be found used, I get it new

Originally I would only buy new dvds. In the beginning it was Suncoast then it was several online stores that we all know about that have very good deals (ahem). Anyways nowadays I seem to focus on ebay. Now at this point many of you are thinking "oh ebay, bootlegs" first I want to clear out that I HAVE NEVER got a bootleg off ebay because I know how to spot them etc (its not that hard no idea why people always make a big deal about it). Anyways the next question is "oh used discs, they got scratches" I want to say I have got a **** load of dvds off eBay and you know only ONE dvd has scratches because I took the risk and got it cheap so i dont care. THe main important thing is I always buy "MINT" discs meaning the dvds I have gotten (other then that one) are all scratch free which makes no difference from buying brand new. The only difference is you dont have the satisfaction of ripping the plastic off (sorry but ill give this up to save money). Not to mention that sometimes its BETTER thats right BETTER to buy mint discs verses brand new because occasionally you will buy brand new discs and you know when you open the packaging of the box and shake the dvd before opening? Nothing beats the sound of a rattingling disc you just paid brand new price for (yea gotta love it right)? So I am sorry but I rather pay A) Less money then brand new B) still be provided a "new" condition items C) Be able to buy more.

NOTE: (This of course isn't counting the deals that certain store has ever year and of course the amazing deals like animeigo had with KoR. Those of course you take advatnage of. What I am saying basically is how you shop is your business but the one who has more money to spend in anime is always the victor in my book ^_^ )

Had to re-edit my post. Mentioned the licenser thing twice.

Just found a nice deal going on at a certain chain of stores, trade 4 used dvds and get 1 new (up to $26.99 value) for free. Gonna grab a bunch of $1 dvds from Walmart and see how it goes. Wish me luck!

*edit*

Bah, didnt work, said they had to be worth at least a penny trade in value. Luckily they have a website with trade in values so i can see whether random bargain bin stuff works.

I never really looked at used anime in stores before seeing this thread. I found Spirited Away for $6 in good condition at Gamestop today. I'll be keeping an eye out for deals like that from now on.

So what do you guys mostly do when buying?? I've been buying monthly but only 1-2 dvds or boxsets. Really depends on the prices but I see alot of people with so much. They must pour more than least 200 a month or so on this stuff unless they find it cheap some place.

I like going on ebay and getting all 26 episodes of an anime and all the ova's in one convenient pack of three DVDs and paying 99 cents BO plus a sneaky 20$ shipping charge. The ones with Japanese and Chinese subtitles of course. :naughty:

I buy used anime dvd's IF they are in perfect condition...
like when I got the Eva thin pack (in perfect condition looked like they didn't even watch them) for $14 or when I got the Haibane Renmei art box with dvd 1 and all of the extras (pencil boards) for $10

I've never bought any used anime yet but at the one Dollar Store near me sells Bandai anime for $3 per DVD of somewhat older anime. I go for those deals and pick up ones I've never seen before to get an idea what they are like.

Got one of my best deals from Animenation today. Boogiepop Phantom Complete Series w/ OST brick for $5.99. 4 Dvds & a cd for $5.99 is not bad at all. The box is a bit beat up but all the dvds are completely scratchless.

They're not just "imports," but they're bootlegs!!!! It might be a little more expensive, but support the anime companies! Not only that, but you get good quality cases that last longer, higher quality video, and DVD extras (sometimes you get "physical extras" too, like pins or jigsaw puzzles).

I only buy new DVD's for a couple of reasons. First, I don't want to take a chance on getting a scratched up or damaged disc. I also don't want a DVD in a damaged and shoddy looking case. I know it seems shallow, but I like for my things to look nice. Second, I want to make sure that I am supporting the industry directly with my money. I have a couple of friends who work in the industry and know how hard they work and the money that goes into bringing anime over here. I want to make sure that I am supporting them.

Having said that, I do shop around and try to find the best deals I can. I wind up buying most of my DVD's at Fry's Electronics, because they have a great selection of both old and new anime and re generally the cheapest. If you have a Fry's in your area, go check out their anime, you'll be happy.

I buy new or used, doesn't matter to me. I always look for the best deal. The packaging is the only thing that would prevent me from buying used anime, that and scratches on the disc. And I've seen some people say they won't buy used because they don't want to take risks with their money. Thats what you have receipts for, new or used.

Most of my collecton was purchased new, but I've gotten alot of my anime from game stores used. Thats where I've found the cheapest anime. I do understand supporting the industry and I try to do that as well. I'll never buy bootleg because of that but also because I've seen a couple and some things (from the ones I've seen) just don't match up. Like someone saying "darn" instead of "damn" and other small things like that. Its not a huge deal, but it bothers me.

I've bought used before, but will only buy new now. I got a defective disc buying used, and if I hunt for deals, I can often find new dvds for near/at/below the price of used dvds.

I basically just buy thin packs and box sets. That's how I save my money. And certain sites which have some killer sales.

It sure beat the old days, $29.95 for 1 volume VHS vs. $24 for a complete series in both SUB and DUB.

MightyDustLoop

I don't mind used. Some good deals can sometimes be found on Ebay if noone gives a rat's arse about the series. And just like there's crap series that are popular, there's some pretty good series that go under the radar every now and then.

Still, there's some mighty good deals that can be found for even new shows, especially with all the random clearance sales that go on. It works for me, because my taste is fairly broad, and getting things that are deals helps me slim things out a tad. If you're fairly open minded and not set on getting a certain thing as soon as possible no matter what version it is, there's really no good reason to buy bootlegs. A lot of real ones can be found cheaper, and you're taking a probably loss in quality. Not to mention it's, well, illegal copyright infringement on the part of the people you're purchasing from.

But goodness yes I remember the old days. Choose a language. Get anywhere from 1-4 episodes, usually on the lower end of that spectrum. Pay full MSRP because there simply wasn't a lot of choices and dealer competition going on. Truly, it sucked.
