Have you ever looked at the AN banner and thought to yourself, "I wish they'd put Gunbuster up there" or "I bet I could make a sweet Dirty Pair banner"? Well now's your chance!

We're posting a PSD (Photoshop) template for you to work with. Once you're done, post your banner in this thread. Occasionally we'll come in, grab the one we like the most, and use it on the site!

Here are a few tips if you're looking to make a banner we'll use:


Use a series that we carry, so we can link the banner to a product or category on the store.
Fan art may only be used with the consent of the original artist.
Keep it acceptable for all ages (no hentai).
When saving, choose "Save for Web" and change setting to "JPEG High".
List the name of the series and characters pictured in your post.

So I was browisng the IMPORT BOOK section and I found out that AN has a book about Shin-Getter's NEXT AMAZING FANSUB PROJECT! So I figured I'd make a banner you guys wont use because you hate classic mech anime.

Couldn't resist. I know the picture looks a little uneven, but that's mostly as a result of the way it was painted. The glossy-esque cell style. Noriko and Gunbuster are from the same image (http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/6733/maybemoreds4.jpg) though.
I also have a cleaner version, with no "Aim for the top!" on the Animenation sign, and no black hole.... vapors?^^;

Nu Gundam from Char's Counterattack. I would have done Ideon (who wouldn't?) or Gunbuster, but I didn't have any images from them that really worked with the AN banner (they're both all about verticality, so that leads to conflict with a horizontal canvas.)

I was looking for a Ideon/Gunbuster pics so I could do a banner for Prons and that's the same problem I had, Either the pics were too long or just plain ugly.

Wow! I have to say, this is going to make picking banners very easy on one hand, and very hard on the others deciding which to choose.

Seeing some great stuff. Looking forwarding to starting to use them next week. Remember, just because we don't use yours doesn't mean it's not good, or we don't like it. It may also be in the list of upcoming ones, which I dont' know if we'll disclose or not. There are a lot of choices and they can't all be used, or at least used right away. Also, art is often subjective and given different pieces, different people would choose differently. Some unconventional things may catch our eye, or we may just be going for a certain thing.

That said (not to be a downer) I'm really impressed with the response! Of course, I expected nothing less from our talented members.. ;)

Instead of making a whole bunch of banners that would end up being average, I put some time into making one that I really cared about. I did try a few different backgrounds with this one, but in the end, I just went back to the AN default. It worked well with what I wanted. So here you go, Maison Ikkoku.

Well, I think that giving AN's members a chance to create banners themselves is an excellent way to jump start the creative process around here! Allowing the members of this forum to show off their skills, to let them make a banner of what they personally would like to see showcased, and to display their love for a certain anime series really makes AN seem dedicated to maintaining the friendly, almost 'family atmosphere' they have here. I love this idea! ^_^

Maybe after awhile, the mods can tell us what series they would specifically like to be used for that week/month--but for now, it is up to us (and doesn’t everyone like creative freedom?) ! =) Sure, having another mod do the work would help with the 'communication' aspect of the banner-making process, but allowing the members to help out instead shows AN's trust in us--and I think that is very important. It is fun, and quite easy, so....more people (some of which aren’t even into art and whatnot) are taking the time to help out! This is great!!

Well, what is so wrong with the members continuing to contribute every once and awhile? Miyakarayne did some AWESOME banners during her reign, but I'm sure she is busy just like everyone else is. I'm not saying anything is wrong with Members making banners. If I did, I wouldn't have made the amount I did. I'm just saying, I'm hoping this wont turn into a giant ego thread, because after a while, I have a feeling either some argument will start, or people will act high and mighty over getting their banner up on the top. Just saying from expirience.

But I do like your banner Shiro, if anything, you would fit best as the head banner maker. Although can we change the link colors and such? I did it once to see what it would look like, but don't they like the Blue and Green?

Haha, yeah I don't know actually. I took creative license in my banners, but....I might have to resort to changing them back to the original colors if someone has a problem :P. It would be good for the mods to address this question--I think you and I are the only ones who has changed the color pallet..but....I'm sure others would if they knew it was okay to do.

I think I asked before about it--along with how to 'save for web' and still get the file to upload somewhere--but I don't think that my question was answered...

Hmm....maybe I need to PM a mod....

I'm glad to see everyone becoming so involved with this great idea. It's wonderful to know that AN is going to have some awesome banners in the future. I agree with 12String, they're going to have a hard time choosing every time they change the banner.

My "reign" (as Shiroiyuki put it ^_^) was fun, but I'm happy to leave the task to the AN forum members. Keep up the great work! As much as I adore Lum, I can't wait for the banner to change!

Do you use Photoshop to do your work? If so, Go To File > Save For Web, and then just save it to where you want. As to upload, go to Imageshack. And then if the Mod wants it, they can just save the picture. Is that what you wanted to know?

No prob, although you dont need to edit the past posts, I can see them fine, And Im sure the mdos can too. Imageshack takes JPEG files fine, so after you save for web, the file type should be in either GIF which Imageshack takes, or JPEG. You can choose which with the window that pops up after you click Save For Web.

Instead of making a whole bunch of banners that would end up being average, I put some time into making one that I really cared about. I did try a few different backgrounds with this one, but in the end, I just went back to the AN default. It worked well with what I wanted. So here you go, Maison Ikkoku.

I guess I suppose so. Although now seeing your guy's work...little discouraging. I'll go ahead and make a few more tonight, although I'm trying to find a decent Air Gear pic to use. I made a Peacemaker one and a Read Or Die. My computer is sorta dieing on me, so I'll post them all when I'm done. At most though, I'll try to keep it to like 3 or less a day. I'm gonna be way to busy this week with getting ready for college to do any more. Unless I can't sleep.

EDIT: As far as graphic designing goes, I've done a lot of it. I mean, that's what Im gonna get into for college. I have a problem of overthinking pics though. I do like a lot of my banners, it's just I have a lot to live up to it seems. I'll do my best and wont quit though.

Thing is, they can't use it until the DVD's come out. They could do it for the manga I suppose, but they might be waiting until the Dub is at least shown on TV, that's why there arent that many Bleach ones.

Does anyone know how I can copy an image directly from GIMP onto this template? The only programs I seem to be able to cut from are Corel Painter 2 Essentials (don't laugh) and Paint, and if I do that not only does the image quality suffer but I also have to deal with the white box around the image. Or maybe someone knows a different free program that I can use? Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for saying the banners were good, I'm quite proud of them. To Be honest, I dont care if AN doesnt stock it. I really liked making these. Now this is more of a test of my skill, rather than saying "I hope these are good enough to make it to the top!" I made them cause it was fun. I don't care if they don't get picked, just knowing I can make something that cool is good enough for me.

We need to come up with a better way to handle submissions next week. Obviously one thread ain't gonna cut it. We still want to keep it all on the forums for everyone to see, but I'm thinking we need a way to seperate banner submitted for possible use, banners made just for fun, banner requests, and talk on techniques and such.

RE4 is a videogame. AN sells anime.

AN also sells game music, merchandise, and collectable figures, which feature videogames such as Final Fantasy VII (well, in the Game Music section at least).

Those banners (if re-done to feature official artwork) could be used to push any number of different things. I don't think the banners have to be just for the upcoming anime/manga sales.


Or, am I wrong? Hmm...*looks back to first page*...I really don't know. Nothing was mentioned that these banners HAD to represent anime/manga. I think it was for anything Animenation sold in general.

everyone keeps mentioning using official art. how the hell do i tell the diff between official and not? i know what fanart is but there are people out there that do awesome work and its hard to tell. do i have to go to official websites or somthing and download image packs or what? and yes that was the PSM Magazine Summer Swimsuit RE4 pic lol. i have them downloaded from one of the PSM DVDs i have. never expected it to actually make the cut (just like the FFVII i did with tifa and aerith). those where the first i ever did, by the way, because i never really use photoshop for anything else except messing with my regular digital cam photos. once i start getting offical images though ill start getting serious about what i make. but for now im just having fun. i DO think the FLCL one i made is good enough for AN standards though, eh?

not sure if this one will be appropriate for AN due to the fact that it was never really a game or anime in the first place and that i got it from a PSM magazine DVD. its the main character from the april fools joke game Valkyrie Wilde. ill only post the link to it:
