I was used for centuries as a fibre crop, the native variety not being very rich in mind altering chemicals. They did not get the stronger versions until around 130 years ago. End of story.

It is all you will find, Japan's drug of choice was Opium, they were major brokers dureing the Meji era until the end of WWII. Anyone smokeing dope before the Meji would have been a peasent so not worthy of mention in their histories. There are a few references to peasents smokeing extra hemp but they are few and far between and usually after 1870.

Actually cannabis was mainly used for cooking. The seeds could have been used to make spices. The idea to smoke it came from the west. I hear there are places in Japan that still us it for cooking but you have to have a permit and harvest it before it becomes a narcotic.

No opium had been in Chiina and Japan since prehistoric times. The idea of peddleing it for profit was a Western idea though.

No it was used the same way eveyone else used it. For hemp, any other valuw would have been frugality and incedental. The only thing I can think of right off foodwise is a form of Seven Spice powder.
