I am writing an editorial for my college newspaper and was wondering if anyone can photoshop or link a really good anime picture that would look good to go along with the article. Since its a college newspaper, it just has to follow what you'd think acceptable in a regular newspaper, so no nudity or drugs, but other than that, it would probably be acceptable, even if the cloths are skimpy.

I think formal publications such as a newspaper require written permission to use an anime image. You might want to contact Geneon or ADVfilms for permission to use an image.

Contacting the companies is a good idea, since they can often give you promotional images that are better than what you could find on the net anyway.
Although if you give us an idea of some of the points you make in your article, we could point you toward some series that would be good ones to look for.

Other then getting permission from real companies I suggest you re-post this in the Fanart forum. Here at AN There are quite a few individuals who are very good at drawing and I am sure you can find someone who would be willing to draw you something if you ask.

^Careful, it can be construed as infringement as well.
At best, a find a picture you have in mind and contact the licensors with an e-mail requesting use of the image, a link or copy of the article, and explaination of the situation. I've found in the past most companies in the US are very good about it as it is good publicity and are very receptive because you actually took the time to ask, rather than just pirate something from a "public" website or other source.

 infringement? Where in my post did I tell him to go and rip pictures and pose as his own?? I told him to re-post in the fanart section and see if someone would draw for him. You know, an original piece? Perhaps you either didn't understand my post or I am confused by your post.

You know Eternity, that is an EXCELLENT idea! If Lankard got someone to make an original anime-style picture for his college editorial (and credited them after they went to the trouble to fill his request--not just 'rip the drawing off' and whatnot), not only would he get a picture he could use for his paper--but that said artist could get EXPOSURE! That alone would be worth the 'volunteer work' required for this particular project.
Lankard--you really should repost this request in the Fanart sub-forum. ^_^.

You know, my college paper features a lot of cartoons in which every individual who isn't George W. Bush looks almost exactly like Goku. I know that doesn't help, but I think it's hilarious.
Sorry.

The way I read it, it doesn't explicitly say 'an original piece'. I remember once I trolled into the subforum and saw this excellent drawing of Ed from FMA - wonderful technique, great composition, all that jazz - which isn't what I would consider original. After all, the rights for the use of FMA for, well, lack of a better word, professional use belong to plenty of people and a fan using their drawing of such for professional credentials or exposure would violate the fair use clause.
In short, I read one thing, you intended anoter, and confusion ensues.

Well, one must realize that any 'fanart' from another fandom wouldn't be considered original in any sense of the word. Yes, you could make Ed in your own style, and give him an original pose--but it would still be 'fanart', and thus not appropriate for distribution purposes.
What I (and Eternity) was talking about was an ORIGINAL character, in an original pose/setting that could be used for his editorial. Not fanart. Lankard would have to find someone willing to do an original piece (not fanart, again) that could be used for what he needs to do. That wouldn't be infringement on anything, if he got the artist's permission and credited them accordingly.
Not all artists on this site do fanart alone---some of us have original styles, original characters, and original ideas that are not based off another already made fandom. I think if Lankard still needed an original piece (if he didn't want to contact the various companies to get permission to use an actual fandom's artwork) he could find more than a few willing, capable artists on this site that could help him out ^_^.

Can someone tell me who produces: Hellsing, Inuyasha, and Samurai Deeper Kyo? Or if you have any info on a site that has a full listing of anime/manga, with a synopsis of the story, or corporate info.
I'm gonna contact the companies directly and ask then about use of their picture, as well as if they have any special image that they would like to have posted as a way to indicate more than one anime/manga series, like a group photo of characters from different series

You wouldn't necessarily contact the producer; you'd contact the regional license holder for the series whose characters you wish to display.
If your article isn't about any series in particular, it would be infinitely simpler if you just had an artist draw you an original character image in a style recognized as "anime/manga-ish". I wouldn't go with a licensed image unless it somehow added some kind of meannig to your editorial. If it's a specific editorial rant about Narutards or InuYasha fangirls, then contacting Viz for promotional images makes sense. If it's an editorial about anime in general, then a piece of original art in the appropriate style should suffice, I'd think.
It's up to you, obviously. ^_^
