I'm finally planning on sitting down and watching EoE. However, I was pissed off over the English series dub's treatment of Ritsuko and the general integrity of the plot. Also, "sempai" is way cuter than "ma'am".

Thus, is EoE available in the original Japanese with English subtitles? Additionally, is there a particularly interesting or enlightening version in French or German? I remember Shinji seeming like a real stick in the mud in the German version of a series ep. It was hilarious.

The entirety of Neon Genesis Evangelion, including the series and the theatrical features is available as dual-language DVDs in both English and Japanese with English subtitles. I can't tell you anything about other dubs, because I don't understand those languages, and have not troubled myself to watch whatever dubs in those languages exist. I can tell you, however, that such languages are not available on the DVDs commercially available in America.

What, exactly, does Maya scream when Ritsuko/Lillith imbraces her in the English dub?

She screams "Ritsuko! Ritsuko! Ritsuko!". Like shes having an orgasm....

Its the same as the sub line.

Odd. There's quite a difference between "teacher" and "informal first name".

I actually find it annoying when in English characters call people "teacher", I never called any of my teachers "teacher". I also hate it when characters call their brother "brother" instead of their name, I never called my brother "brother" unless I'm referring to him of course. It just feels so abnormal in English, it might just be me. This annoyed me in FMA.

I'd prefer in dubs that they call them by their names because thats how we speak to people in English most of the time. Oddly enough in dubs, characters saying sensei or sempai doesn't bug me. Sometimes its for the better, like in the new Macross dub from ADV the translator explained that it was better that Hikaru called Roy sempai rather than saying something annoying like "big brother". They could have just made it so he always said Roy, but they wanted a really accurate translation for Macross since in the past all we got was Robotech....

That makes sense. It seemed to me that "sempai" would have been in the dubbed version as well, as there is clearly a formality gap there. "Dr. Akagi" or "ma'am" could have been passable, albeit strange. Using "Ritsuko" implies that the scene is in Maya's mind as it is more of a personal, unlikely choice, rather than the tangible events surrounding her that using "sempai" ,a more logical term, would imply. Another discontinuity *sigh*. Every time I think about the dub I piss myself off more.

Would anyone happen to have access to a clip with Maya screaming "Ritsuko"? It's be interesting to see how they timed that to the movements to make it work.

Senpai = person of same social grade but with more seniority
Sensei = teacher (or in some contexts, medical doctor)

English really doesn't have the same spectrum of social niceties that Japanese does - that sort of stuff is really hardwired into the language.

In such contexts, you either have to leave the original form of address untranslated, or completely replace it with what an English speaker would say in the same circumstances, so "Senpai!" or "Ritsuko!", but not the literal "Senior!"
