Some copy protected CDs can only be played on PC by a player with built-in DRM. Often not compatible with Mac OS or with Linux. Ripping MP3s may be a problem, as may the installation of malware.

Wow. I've never heard of them. People would actually buy that?

Probably. But you should be prepared to get some DRM (Digital Right Management) with it. Or isn't it being better termed C.R.A.P. (Content, Restriction, Annulment, and Protection by the courtesy of ZDNet (http://news.zdnet.com/2036-2_22-6035707.html))?

Well, I wouldn't. Didn't you hear about the Sony rootkit? If I discovered that I had bought a disc which was copy-protected in any way, I'd return it to the store and inform them that it was defective. Since it fails to conform to the Red Book standard, it's not even really an audio CD.

Ahh, excellent. That's not the case for all types of copy-protected CDs, as you probably know.

The best way to get around Copy CDs is to just hold shift when you put the CD in your computer. Holding shift prevents autorun from working, so the CD cannot put the DRM Rootkit on your PC. The rootkit basically makes the cd look like it doesnt contain any music, so you cant rip mp3s or put it into your iPod or anything. A good example of this is the Switchfoot cd "Nowhere is sound". The band actually apologized about the rootkit on their cds, saying they didnt want it but Sony put it on there anyway. Then the actual band members told people how to get around it lol. If you dont let the DRM rootkit get installed, then you should be able to rip mp3s just like you would any other cd. The music has to be on the cd somewhere, otherwise it wouldnt work in regular CDs

I can't entirely agree. I will concede that this is one viable method, but there are two things that prevent it from being the "best". First of all, I consider autorun to be an unacceptable security hole, and can only recommend that all users disable it entirely. Second of all, the best way to get around it is to not buy the CD, which sends a financial message to the publisher.
