Sorry, I know I'm in the Gundam forum but I thought you guys would know this. I watched the first few DVDs of Robotech Macross Saga about 2 years ago and stopped watching b/c it was so old and cheesy. I liked the story line, but couldn't get past the "Super friends" animation. I have seen that new DVD's are coming out called "Macross". Is this just a rerelease, or is it totally reanimating the old saga? I am confused on all the sagas, the Macross/Robotech stuff? Can anyone clarify for me or point me to a good website that can explain?

Macross was a Japanese anime, which existed prior to the creation of Robotech. When Robotech was made, it combined footage from Macross and two other anime, to provide the desired number of episodes. Macross is the original, Robotech is the somewhat different American version.

Did you watch the old Robotech DVDs? Because the quality on those REALLY sucks, you can watch it remastered now.
Just go with SDF Macross TV which ADV has been releasing.

Since you are complaining about how old the animation looks, I don't think you will enjoy Macross no matter which version you see.
Its a pity, Macross is a very good series. A shame you can't enjoy it

What I meant was, it looked more american than japanese. So Robotech is from the US, and Macross is from Japan? I like old anime a lot, but like I said before this was like watching Super Friends or He-man. Old anime like Vampire Hunter D is great, but this was different.

So did you watch the old Robotech DVDs?
Robotech is 3 anime shows edited into one & renamed "Robotech". SDF Macross was the first part of Robotech. Its the same animation. Robotech has edits & a really chessy dub & replaced music that makes it seem even more like a kids Saturday cartoon than it already did.
It doesn't look like Super Friends or He-man.
PS- Vampire Hunter D animation is really bad, its a movie & its animation is worse than a TV series animation that came out at the same time.

Could it be that the saturday-morning-cartoon-esque voice acting and music, combined with the faded video quality, are making the animation seem more like that of a saturday morning cartoon to you?
Either Robotech Remastered or the Macross Uncut DVDs will look infinitely better, but if it's the voice acting and music that's getting to you, then Macross is the way to go. Seems that the Robotech version never really worked for you.
