Do you guys notice how a lot of things come back to you in the weirdest way? Like when you've listened to certain song you haven't listened to in a while, or read something from a long time ago - past memories sort of hit you when you somehow least expect them to?

For instance, smells are probably the most powerful in triggering memory. I've smelt things like perfume, certain foods, and people's houses, and they all seem to vividly take me back to a previous encounter with the same aroma.

Of course, that's just one example of something that might trigger memory. I'm not sure if any of you notice things like this, or if I am too sensitive about the past... ^_^

I'm not even joking, this thread just reminded me of this one "psychologist" dude that always used to be in here asking the same stuff like you are right now.

It's really weird, there's two songs: Maaya Sakamoto's "Bokura No Rekishi" (for Clamp School Detectives that reminds me of the 1934 film The Thin Man (I was listening to it non-stop when I was in Futurshop buying the complete collection of The Thin Man for CAN$60+!!!); and Do As Infinity's "For The Future" that reminds me of the 1936 film My Man Godfrey (first songs I listened to after seeing the film... and wondered, "What if they remaked this film, this would make a great ending song?")...

And I'm a very visual guy so I actually think of images of photographs I've seen or scenes from the film every single time I hear these songs...

Okay, you're thread's officially trolled by me... :D

Really? Maybe this psychologist guy should drop by here and give us a few pointers on the topic. :)

I'm old and grey...

Therefore, I have NO memory of anything, anymore.

There you go.

Next subject.

(And..what the heck were you talking about, again?)

I want a memory problem too! :O The happiest people in the world I've seen were old folks at a nursing home who got excited over deciding whether or not they wanted vanilla or chocolate pudding. One of them was like "Oooooh, I GOT to try the chocolate, I haven't tasted it yet!!"

Yes, I do this purposely, when I'm playing a certain game or on a holiday I'll have a soundtrack of music to listen to so When I listen to that it helps me remember.

I was serious about the psycologist. He brought up threads that got you thinking. Never really laid out how it worked, but got the noggin going.

As for the topic at hand:
Sometimes, I listen to music as a sort of schedule. It reminds me I have stuff to do. lol. Not that I actually get down to doing it.

There's a DDR song (butterfly?) that brings back memories of going to Carowinds (eastern theme park) with my friends. It's kind of weird.

Most of DDR songs have that effect on me too; I remember the times I used to hang out in arcades with my friends back in high school. (geez, I'm getting old)

Smells trigger memories in me too, but in my case I only have blurry flashbacks and I am not able to remember when or where I smelled that in the first place.

The number 19 almost always reminds me of an ex-girlfriend of mine. Her birthday was on the 19th of a month, and she obsesses over the number 19. In a way I see the number 19 as bad luck for me.

They say that method is good to help you study, too. You listen to some music while you're studying, and then the day of the test, you listen to that same music to help you remember.

Eating pistachios reminds me of mario kart 64, because my sister and I would pig out on 'em while playing that game. That, and Abe's Exoddus.

Yeah, I have them all, smells, music and all sorts of triggers, even blowing of wind and sounds of rain. And then I have dejavus for no apparent reason, just doing something and have this feeling that once before I was doing the same thing in the same atmosphere, I am not sure how to describe that.

yeah, walking on a side walk covered in snow brings back memories.. the song "lean on me" brings back memories... playing soccer brings back plenty of memories..

but my memory might be a little impaired right now, as i was wrecked in the face with a soccer ball today..

OMG!! That was classic right there, Kiyomi!

Anyways yes I have had memory triggers. I was going thru some old letters over the weekend and came across some I didn't even know I had kept. Lots and lots of memories came flooding back for sure.

Right. The phenomenon is known as a retrieval cue. Sometimes, they can induce flashbulb memories as well. Experiencing the stimulus can bring back the memory through spontaneous recovery. It's not unusual at all and this is precisely how multiple-choice questions in examinations work.
