I want some Japanese music with lyric writing with depth/cleverness/whatever comparable to that of say.. Bob Dylan, Conor Oberst (I'm sure someone's going to have my head for mentioning him among these other names.. but the truth is despite his unstellar moments I think Conor's still a pretty damned good lyricist), Elliott Smith, Paul Simon, etc.

What might you recommend?

And just to clarify genre is not an issue here for me.. so it doesn't HAVE to be folksy stuff or whatever. :x

Rurutia writes all her own lyrics and songs, and they're all very poetic and moving. My favorite Rurutia song is Selenite. Here's a video of the credits of Karas, which plays the song and even has karaoke and subs ^___^

From those artists that you mentioned, I'd recommend on the JPop circuit: Rie Fu, Garnet Crow, Saori Atsumi and Yui (Sony Music artist).

Chris Mosdell's lyrics for "Dreams In A Pie," "The End Of All You'll Know," "The Garden Of Everything," "Butterfly," and "Psychedelic Soul"... I admire people like him with a knack for witty lyrics that almost like poetry...

Tim Jensen's lyrics for "Gotta Knock A Little Harder" (somewhat folksy--but not), "No Reply," and "Is It Real?"......

Very good list. I especially love YUI out of that list, but know all of them well enough :)
