For some reason my comp has recently gotten messed up. I can't play MOV or MPEG4 video files, I can't convert video to my iPod, I can't watch anything online, animated online banners have ceased to work, and I can't play some of the browser-based games I did before. Could anyone possibly tell me what is wrong and how I might fix it? I'm pretty sure it's a problem with QuickTime, since the QuickTime logo pops up with a question mark over it, but I can't figure out how to fix it.

Have you tried reinstalling quicktime? It might be a codec problem as well. If you've installed a codec pack, try reinstalling them as well.

Tried that, didn't work.

The only thing I can think of that's changed recently is that I installed Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. I would also add that this game doesn't work.

If games aren't working, try reinstalling your video card drivers

uninstall that game and reinstall your video card drivers(like Lord Dagoth said.)

Video card drivers dont effect Codecs.
Try grabing the KM lite Codec Pack and installing that. For Oblivion tell me what your rig has inside of it. Normally it doesnt work due to lower than system reqs.

Did oblivion stop working the same time as everything else? Or did it never work? Also what are your system specs? and how long have you had it?

I have found using the Omega Drivers is better than using the actual drivers from ATI or Nividia. For all your codec needs just install the CCCP. Here's the webpage for it: http://www.cccp-project.net/, http://www.omegadrivers.net.

I made sure to check all of my specs before installing the game, and my PC met all of them.

Oblivion never worked. Fortunately for me this is a friend's copy, which he let me borrow to try it out before I shelled out the cash to buy. Since it doesn't work I know not to waste the money.

As for my system, here is what I know.

PC: Dell Dimension 2350
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.00 GHz
Memory: 640 MB RAM
System: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Video Card: ATI Radeon 7500

I've had this PC for several years, although I cannot remember exactly when I got it. I think either three or four years ago.

Get this:

It may help.

You sure it wasn't another elder scrolls game that you checked the specs for?

A 2 ghz celeron is not equivalent to a 2G Pentium 4.
Also, I do not see the R7500 in the list and according to ATI, your card only has 64mb memory (128 is minimum).

Anyways, try reinstalling DirectX. It seems you're problem started after you installed Oblivion, and that automatically installs DX9.0 (try an older version).

Ah, my apologies for my ignorance. I thought 2 Ghz was 2 Ghz no matter what the actual name.

Looks me like some problems with registry. It can be hijacking. I'd recommend full reinstall. With windows you have to do it every half a year if you use it intensively. At least you will have a few interesting days and the system will be faster in the end.

Well it always means the same thing, which is the number of processor cycles per second. However, not all processor cycles are created equal. Different processors can do different things with a single cycle, and Celerons are kind of stripped-down. They're cheap, why would you expect them to be as good as the more expensive option?

I think the main difference is the cache memory size
