Study Kendo?
I'm not trying to be flippant. I just think that if a person isn't trained in how to properly wield a sword, they shouldn't be drawing it and attempting to look 'cool' with it. A sword is a tool, not a toy.
Watch Ranma 1/2. Learn from Tatewaki Kuno, the Blue Thunder of Furinkan High. He can defeat a watermelon like no other swordsman.
Oh - DRAW! ;)

I see Perhaps I should have been more specific (though i thought posting this this thread in the fan art forum counted for something)
I meant draw as in with a pencil. On paper.

I'll check and see what books are out there for Swords, Chef. Then get back to you on this.
My son can draw some really mean looking swords..he's good with things like weapons and things that cause mass destruction.
So, I'll ask him what books to recommend.

It helps if you've studied - or know someone who has studied - some type of swordcraft. It's kind of hard to draw a character posed with a certain weapon if you're not familiar with that weapon yourself. But just knowing how to properly hold and/or swing a sword might be sufficient enough to give you an idea of how to draw characters holding swords. After that, the only thing you can do is practice. :)
For katana in particular, here's my advice: closely study pictures of actual katana (if you don't have access to a real katana) - just Google "katana images" and you'll find something. Study each detail carefully - the blade, the hilt, the guard, everything. Then practice drawing different parts of the katana.
There's got to be at least one book out there on how to draw swords from different angles. (I'm sure there's a Complete Idiot's Guide to Drawing Swords or a Drawing Swords for Dummies; they seem to make a book for just about everything.)

Katanas are nice and all that, but it also helps to be well familiarized with other sword designs.
