Invader Zim is probably my favorite American cartoon, and coincidentally the only American TV show (to my knowledge, and I've looked abroad; not counting the movie One Hour Photo) that has ever referenced Neon Genesis Evangelion (camera angles in Hamstergeddon, "umbilical cable" concept in Megadoomer, though both are more along the lines of indirect references as opposed to outright spoof or mention), and I was really excited when I found out that in The Most Horrible X-mas Ever, according to Wikipedia and other sources: "Dib's defeat of the Santa suit and Zim's subsequent escape parody the destruction of Lilith in the film The End of Evangelion."
But... uh... I didn't really see any similarities. I had also read that Zim being taken into Santa was a parody of Shinji being taken into Shogouki... that seemed kinda similar, but not enough to really be a direct parody. And I'm pretty sure Unit 01 popped out of Lilith's eye, not midriff. So what exactly was the parody?
Nonetheless, I have to say The Most Horrible X-Mas Ever was an absolutely fantastic episode of a fantastic series, and the best Christmas special I have ever seen.
