This episode always struck me as being odd. It's like several different eps put together. Any explanations for this? Wild-eyed guesses?....

Its somewhat of a comic relief episode to take a break from the serious tone it was at I guess. It was an enjoyable episode. Much like some episodes of Bleach where there would be a silly filler about Kon durring the mostly serious Soul Society arc.

Well, this would be the only true "filler" episode of the series (its nice when a series has only 1 filler ep, not a whole filler arc *cough* Naruto *cough*). My guess is they didnt finish the storyboards for the next episode, so they animated one of Arakawa's Gaiden stories (like the Fullmetal vs. Flame episode, though that one sorta had something to do with the story).

Are you talking about the episodes with the warehouse and the report on Roy? If so I believe those were novels created by Arakawa's staff or probably employees of Square Enix like the story about the city woth the red water.

Episode 37 "The Flame Alchemist, The Bachelor Lieutenant, and The Mystery of Warehouse 13." This episode is most definately a filler episode. It does have a few serious moments (I think) but still a filler. I do love this episode tho since it's rather humourous at parts.

I thought it was one of the funniest episodes in FMA. It's filler, but good filler.

Their where a couple of other ones that had barely any relevance to the plot, the visit to the guy who stole people's souls in an attempt to bring back his girlfriend who actually never died, the Psiren episode, the guy who wanted to wear Al. Alot of these had one scene that was relevant to the plot(and these scenes could have been added to previous episodes.)
As some people previous mentioned that episode was created based on a Gaiden Arakawa made, and a story that was included in the Land of Sand novels. The episode where Black Hayate was introduced was similairy made. The Fullmetal vs. Flame Alchemist is a gaiden Arakawa made, as is the Dog of the military.

I mainly ment it as "true" filler as the main 2 characters (ed & al) werent in it along with not adding anything to the storyline. The episodes you mentioned were pretty much filler, but they tended to add minor details to the series, while 37 was mainly a comedy break (though i crack up everytime with the Armstrong's sister part)

Oh yeah the part with Armstrong's sister is a hoot!! I like the Warehouse 13 part the best tho. Esp when Mustang's crew goes there!! I laugh everytime. Dang Black Hayate! Hehe!

That episode was funny, but I' m not too much into filler episodes... I' m glad FMA only have a few compared to other animes that has more than needed.
