I think the reason Man-Faye, aside from regular cosplayer/crossplayers, garners so much more attention is the controversey surrounding him. He was barred from AX a year or two back from playing the role that gave him (Internet) fame. I think part of what gave him fame was the character he was portraying, too - a character who wears incredibly skimpy clothing, while he himself isn't exactly androgenous.

His interview with Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/columns/sunday.php?id=48) also garnered more support and his got to be a mouthpiece for his cause.

He also auditioned for "Who wants to be a superheor" (which is stupid, since Faye is a copyrighted character and would never be allowed to win).

May I ask just one question? What if there was a "man-Faye" who had a similar body type, and was a more faithful rendition of the character who would appear to be just as pretty as the original? You know: someone in his late teens/early 20's who didn't quite a muscular build, etc.

I have a feeling it would be half of the controversey with twice the disgusting factor. Some fanboy will be all like "She's hot" then find out its a guy. At least with our current, real Man-Faye, there's not exactly the same sort of surprise as you would get "reaching down for a slice of butter and coming up with the entire stick".

In all honesty, I don't think 99% of the women out there could successfully cosplay Faye. Both her body and her attire defy physics. There aren't many women out there with the right proportions, and it'd be a slim percentage of them that:

a) were interested in anime
b) had seen the show, and
c) could pull off the right 'attitude' for the character

There are better characters to cosplay, I think. Faye is a cool character, but a poor costume choice.

I agree that a truly androgenous man-Faye, perhaps even androgenous enough to be disturbingly attractive would present a greater threat to the sexuality of the average fanboy than our current hairy specimen does, but when you put it in those words...
