View Full Version : Is Anyone Else Reading BROKEN ANGELS? It's Yuri, Afterall!

I haven't seen anyone on this forum mention BROKEN ANGELS, the Tokyopop series about the girl who can control water and who likes to wear boy's clothes. I've read the first two volumes and I am enjoying this series, though I agree with one criticism I read on animeondvd.com - it's sort of hard to figure out who's talking and keep track of what's happening.
But I dig the main character, Sunao, and Kureha, her somewhat unhinged girlfriend. There's one funny scene in the second volume when the school nurse is scolding them with the hilarious remark, "No homosexual relations in the school clinic!"
The main focus of the series isn't their romance, and it seems everyone falls in love with Sunao as things move along, but I'm diggin' it. Sunao is sort of a strange magical girl with powers to control water and incredible empathy for animals and other people and so forth. I'm recommending this one to anyone who may have overlooked it. And if you have read it, what's your opinion?

Just saw it at the bookstore. Didnt get it cause i am swamped by manga. The story sounds interesting, but the art didn't sit to well with me.

Thanks for the info, Milky! I hadn't heard a thing about it. When time and financial status allow, that will be an assured acquisition!

I was thinking about reading it. Does anybody know how many volumes it is total?

That's the link for the Tokyopop page. Volumes 1 and 2 are already out. Volume 3 comes out in October, and it looks like there might be 5 volumes total...? The series isn't hardcore yuri... like I said, it's not really about their love affair and Kureha is barely even in the second volume (though another girl develops feeling for Sunao when she thinks Sunao is an angel), but I thought the title would be of interest to yuri fans. I'm really liking it!

I read the first volume and it was kind of interesting although the writing and flow could have used some work. It was confusing at times, and not in a good way. I'll probably buy the series at some point, but I have better things to buy right now.

That was a cool little review, thanks for sharing.
I actually wasn't sure I was going to get this series until I read a review in Newtype (of all places... usually I find the actual content of that overpriced magazine to be a bit short, but the review made the book sound interesting - iirc, described the heroine as a "superhero, but not the typical kind"). I'd say the review Starcross linked is pretty fair, though I do disagree with the remark that the main character has all of the sexual attraction of a throwrug. She's beautiful, mysterious, and brooding... sort of like an androgynous James Dean who can control water.

I finally managed to remember the name when I was at the bookstore.
...Actually, no. I forgot the name but saw a cover similar to the picture posted in the reviews. -_-; I feel like I've seen fifty or so titles with "angel" in the name, though.
Thanks for the recommendation, Milky. I really liked it, though not so much for the yuri as the fact that it was simply a good manga. (Well, the fact that I've never before seen a female character like Sunao is also a plus.)
I'm really anxious to see if Sunao and Ikushima develop... something... or if Sunao really does just have the sexuality of a throwrug.

I was at the bookstore, and I forgot the name. There ARE too many "Angel" titles out there. So instead I just picked up Kamikaze Girls Instead. Which I LOVE.

Zohar, no problem, I'm glad you dug it! Like I said, I got interested after reading the review in Newtype, partly because I was looking for something new and partly I think because they referred to Sunao as a "superhero, but not the traditional kind" - talking about how she can control water, how she tries to save those fish, how she dressed like a boy, etc. It just sounded different. The yuri was just a surprising bonus!
And you guys are SO right about there being way too many titles with the word "angel" in them. We could make a list...
BROKEN ANGELS (we'll put it at the top so people DON'T forget the name)
Dark Angel
DNAngel
Angel Sanctuary
Angel Dust
Earthain (well... okay... but it's about angels!)
there's also a series called Glass Wings, also by Tokyopop that came out about the same time as Broken Angels... I got them mixed up when I was first looking for Broken Angels... I guess 'cause glass can be broken and angels have wings...? um... ok... heh... anyone got any other "angel" titles?
