Juri Ueno, who will play the part of Nodame in the drama "Nodame Cantabile."

"Nodame Cantabile," a popular manga by Tomoko Ninomiya that follows the fictional lives of a group of classical music students, is set to be made into a TV drama, it was learned Thursday.

The story, published by Kodansha, will be aired on Fuji Television Network from Oct. 16, with Juri Ueno of "Swing Girls" playing the main character Megumi Noda, otherwise known as "Nodame."

She will be joined by Hiroshi Tamaki playing Noda's lover Shinichi Chiaki. An animated version of the story is also set to be broadcast from January 2007.

"Nodame Cantabile" humorously tells the story of Nodame, a brilliant pianist whose everyday life is a mess, and Shinichi, who is learning classical music. Shinichi's father is a famous musician.

The 15-volume manga series has been hugely successful, with a total of about 11 million copies published.

The screenplay for the drama was written by Rin Eto, who is known for "Tokyo Friends" and "Slow Dance." Auditions were held for the orchestra performing in the drama, and the orchestra musicians are set to release a debut CD.

Fuji TV producer Hiroki Wakamatsu said he wanted characters in the drama to show off their individuality.

"I want to take on the world view of the original work in which conflict between each of the characters beautifully weaves a harmony, while depicting a cast with individuality," he said. (Mainichi)

I'll try to catch this. I loved Slow Dance, so I imagine the adaptation of Nodame Cantabile will be fun (but Slow Dance was an original story, so I can't speak for the author's accuracy in adaptation...)

Looking forward to it.

Really?! This is great! I can't imagine what a real live Nodame would be like. or Mutsumi. I can't wait to see it.

They didn't say if the animated show was going to be a tv series or an OVA?

It'll be so great if they picked it up stateside, then I'd finally have an anime other than a Miyazaki film that my grandfather would like.

Huh, well, at least I know I'll have two sure fire series to watch this fall, anyway. Haven't yet gotten around to reading beyond volume 1 of this series, but it's the kind of story that seems suited to drama adaptation.

The anime is a TV series and will start airing in January. Superficially, it sounds like a sure-fire hit.

They got JC Staff doign the production and its airing in the only-for-good-anime Noitamina slot.

The manga is ace too. One of my favourites at the moment.

Wow! I have been anticipating for this day ever since I fell in love with Nodame Cantabile. I was imagining how the anime would enhance its story when presented with actual music. The idea of Nodame TV drama never came to my mind but now that its become a reality, I must say that its a perfect idea! Im pretty confident that Tamaki Hirosi will do a nice job as Shinichi. Playing Nodame will be a bit trickier, though. =P

And I am curious if they are allowed to use the actual music compositions mentioned in the manga such as Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, etc, as part of its soundtrack. If so, the soundtrack will be truly off-the-hook.

I can't wait! ><

All that music is in the public domain - i.e. anyone can use it. In fact Nodame CDs of the compositions depicted in the manga are a regular feature.

This is the starring attraction for me for January 2007.

Thank you so much for this information. I have always wondered why so many movies, anime, manga, etc, used classical music so freely, I began to wonder (lol). I don't know much about classical music but those mentioned in the manga are big names, that is why am I quite excited about the music. Plus, it will be very interesting to hear it cantabile style, especially of Nodame.
