But here you are, in the ninth, two men out and three men on. Nowhere to look, but inside where we all respond to PRESSURE!
Who's up for the challenge?

Yeah, I thought so. Blame it on my school.
(Actually, people should donate gobs and gobs of money to Shin-Getter so I can quit my job and translate for them full time.)
Now, let's see if it works, Prons.

How about working for good ol' Hisoka? I'm aiming to having a project going sometime next year.
Yo Prons, have any idea what your next project is going to be? It's hard to believe that Ideon is already near complete.

Same deal as Prons - I'll translate for you full time if you can pay my current salary so I can quit my job and just go to school (essentially, I'm just quitting one full time job for another)

I could take a bunch of guesses, but you don't want to make me do that, right? Throw me a bone at least - is it a fansub? A scanlation?

Maybe he had an incredibly rich uncle die and he licensed Touch and isn't telling anyone?

XD! Aww man, that would be incredible. It's clearly the time for sports anime to succeed in the US. I must say, I've often wondered why we don't hear these stories of how some geek won the lottery and licensed the entire Go Nagai back catalogue. You'd think it would happen sooner or later.

My vision is to have a very consistant group, pay a translator to do something most groups wouldn't even think about and to be fully prepared before I get started. I don't want any surprises along the way. The name will be something along the lines of Old School Goodness so it's pretty obvious what the theme will be. The only thing I don't want to work on is Mecha mainly because I have faith that most of them will eventually be picked up by groups like Shin-Getter and so on.
Long term goal is Ashita no Joe (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=456). I've wanted to see this series more then ANYTHING for such a long time now. Many groups have talked about doing it, but no one every steps up the plate and gotten past episode 3. Saizen (a group dedicated to sports anime) talked about working on it back around Christmas, but seem to be having trouble finding staff to work on it. Maybe I'll hook up with them. No idea...

My uncle is loaded so maybe one of these days. ;)

You know how to get a hold of me, should you either
A - start a fansub group and will actually pay the translator
B - in case of your uncle's untimely death.

My vision is to have a very consistant group, pay a translator to do something most groups wouldn't even think about and to be fully prepared before I get started.Paying a translator is one way to ensure that you'll complete the project. Finding someone who adores the anime in question as much as Quiddity does Ideon is another way. Both work, but you're likely to encounter some hostility in the world of fansubbing for paying translators. I don't see why there should be anything wrong with it myself. I hope you've looked into what translators are asking, though. Prons has had contact with some work-for-pay translators, and their rates came as rather a shock to me.
I don't want any surprises along the way. The name will be something along the lines of Old School Goodness so it's pretty obvious what the theme will be.I for one welcome our Old School overlords. It's good to hear that you've got plans to work on older anime, since it does get overlooked by the majority of groups. I'm sure that there will be a few surprises along the way no matter how well you plan things out in advance, but I'm equally sure that you can overcome those difficulties as long as you have at least one regular, reliable translator. That's where most groups fall down, as you've clearly noted. By choosing to pay someone, you've sidestepped the biggest problem most groups encounter. The rest of the job can be handled as a one-man-show if need be.
I'd like to be the first to wish you the best of luck. Please keep us posted on any further developments.

The translator prices will indeed shock a good amount of people. It's something I'm more then willing to do however. As for the hostility, I remember that thread on AnimeSuki back when Prons was looking to pay someone. What it really came down to was that others were jealous of the idea. Paying a translator to work on an older show like Ashita no Joe won't effact the community in the slightest bit. Now if I were to work on something like Naruto with this idea of paying something then that's a major problem. This is how fansubs started in the first place. Central Anime (one of the best groups ever) still pays for their translator work as does Anime-Classic often times.
You pretty much summed up all the reasons why I want to take this approach Soluzar. I'm a huge basketball fan so I always compare the translator to as important a point guard is. You can have tons of good players, but you can't run the show with out the guy dishing the ball.

Central are indeed worthy of much love. If paying a translator is good enough fro them, it should be good enough for anyone. I don't see what's wrong with it myself, as long as you're not asking those who download your fansubs for a "compulsory donation" a la Tazmo.
Ashita no Joe seems unlikely to be licensed after all these years, so yes, I agree that it is a different proposition than if you were soliciting translators to work on a current anime for pay. Fansubs of current anime are intended to be a transitory thing. We discard them in favour of the DVD release as soon as possible. Fansubs of an older series may be the only chance we will ever get to see that anime. It's worth paying a little, if you can afford it, to bring such anime to a larger audience. Not to mention that your subs can be used with legitimately purchased R2 DVDs for the more hardcore fans.

So when do I start getting my checks for the 33 episodes (and 2 more not yet released) I've done? Just kidding :P
Put me in the 'paying for a translator is a good thing' crowd.

I am working on Grendizer, maybe a third to half way through episode 2. One of my conditions was to do a show I wanted with them. My goal would be to get the group onto Endless Orbit SSX.

You're working on the Grendizer anime? I noticed the scans were being worked on, but was unaware of the anime. If that's true then I'm one happy super robot fan.

Hisoka, please don't use this thread to advertise your classic fansub group, especially considering how much we've asked for your help over the year and a half or so and you havn't given it.

He's advertising a group that won't exist until next year, surely you're not worried about him as competiton?

 You call randomly IMing me saying "TIME IDEON!" asking for help?
What is this thread anyway? Until it has a clear identity the discussion can go any which way. It has... deal with it. I'm just letting people know that I have something cooking.

And asking you to do so on the forums, both this one and our own, and PMing you asking if you would ever get back into timing, but simplify it any way you must to make it fit your argument.
