View Full Version : Best Stuff Coming Out In Fall/Winter 2006

Not sure if this is a "repeat" of any threads, but as someone who (1) has a limited budget when it comes to anime (meaning I can only afford to collect 1, 2, 3 series tops! at a time and I've already got my heart set on the upcoming Voltron release), (2) has a hard enough time keeping up with the US releases so might not be as "in the know" about what's hot and what flops before it even gets licensed, and (3) is seeing the series he is currently collecting (VOTOMS, GitS 2nd Gig) wrapping up their US releases shortly and will be ripe for some new stuff - I'm wondering what y'all feel will be the best stuff to check out this fall/winter. I haven't really had any interest in any of the newer longer series (meaning the 6 volume, 26 episode stuff that you really invest your $$ in) coming out over the spring/summer, so like I said, I'm ripe for new shows, new volume 1's, etc. as fall starts. I've been trying to watch the licensing news from the various con reports, but like I said, I'm not always as "in the know" when it comes to what's gonna be good and what's gonna make me wish I'd saved my money and spent it on something else.

So far, the two series that have me most interested are Shakugan no Shana and Ergo Proxy.

Shana's positives - I like the character design of the main character (speaks to my love of Shamanic Princess for some reason) and while I'm not completely sure I "get" the premise of the story, it sounds like it could be a cool supernatural adventure series. Plus Viz will be releasing the manga and the novels, so I like that I could collect the anime and the manga both. What's everyone's opinion on this show? Is it gonna be killer, or is it gonna be really silly? Is it poised to become another Naruto or Zatch Bell "mainstream US hit" since Viz has their hands on the manga ('cause I personally don't dig either of those shows), or will this one stay more "under the radar?" Is this one more comedy or drama?

Ergo Proxy's positives - well, I don't really "do goth" and though the show looks to have a bit of that gothy flare, I love the character designs and I love that it has the same director as Witch Hunter Robin (which I really enjoyed). I also like the techy/android/darkish futuristic element... sorta reminds me of other stuff I love - Texhnolyze, Ghost in the Shell, and Blame! Sounds like this could really be my thing.

Plus Geneon is releasing both of these shows and while I think they tend to have higher prices, I usually tend to enjoy their dubs, marketing, and the overall quality of their product. I know it's silly, but some of us have licensors we trust and ones we've come to steer clear of (I personally think thrice before I purchase anything from ADV but will get on board with Geneon and Media Blasters without much hesitation). So both shows have a lot of positives for me, but I'd like to hear what others think about them before I commit to anything. Granted, I have a few months to see what else is coming out, but maybe y'all think other new titles would be better choices. So please, any feedback (shy on spoilers please) would be welcome. I just don't wanna find myself in the same spot I was with Daphne in the Brilliant Blue, which I was warned would be mediocre but I ended up buying anyway and then regretted it by the time I was halfway through the series. One of those "Why am I buying this?" mistakes that I kept waiting to like more than I really did.

Oh, and just to give a little info about my "tastes" and the stuff I've really loved and don't regret purchasing: Otogi Zoshi, Ghost in the Shell, Witch Hunter Robin, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Shamanic Princess, Geneshaft, Betterman, Mirage of Blaze, Outlaw Star, Loveless, Kannazuki no Miko, Air Master... I'll also add that I tend to like cool female lead characters who aren't b!tches, BL or yuri are a plus but not necessary by any means, too much filler offends me but series that have standalone adventure/case episodes (like GitS and WHR) are great, I prefer drama and action over comedy but strong characterization is most important, and I don't do vampires.

Mainly Hajime no Ippo being fully released by this coming December. You have no idea how glad that makes me feel and just looking at it on my rack brings a smile to my face. All 15 volumes will completely be released by December 19th so everyone better check it out once it's all done. Then all that needs to be released is the Movie and OVA which btw will be on the same disk. Ah... such greatness can't really exist can it? Oh, but it does. Like always, Geneon is the greatest company in the game today.

As for everything else. Well... I'm not nearly as exicted about anything else. Lots of good stuff coming out though like Paradise Kiss, Fantastic Children and so on.

All I'm waiting for is the rest of GitS: 2nd Gig to come out and the release of Paradise Kiss in December. It would be nice if we got a release of PK like the LE release in Japan. At least I want the box as long as it isn't the pink one.

Not to hijack my own thread back, but I was sort of asking if anyone had seen Shana or Ergo Proxy and if opinions on these shows were favorable... If they're only mediocre, what didn't you like about them and what upcoming shows would you suggest in their place?

It seems like Ergo Proxy has been getting some favorable remarks, but what about Shana? Is this series worth the $?

Oh yeah, Shana. I am looking forward to that one too. My thoughts on it? I didnt watch the whole series. I started too, and I liked most of what I saw. I saw that they seemed to be going in a direction I like, but it also seemed to be going in a weird/strange alternate route to get to that destination.

Combined with other stuff I was watching at the time, I decided to put Shana on hold, and wait for the DVD release.

I really love all the character designs, and the animation was rpetty darn good, from what I saw of it.

I havent made the decision to rent or buy yet, but usually by this time i would have already decided to rent. So the fact that I'm still thinking of blind buying it means that something about it holds a certain charm in my eye. Maybe I'll rent it first, and then wait for a thinpak for buying?

I've only seen the first episode (the second episode is already downloaded) and Shakugan no Shanatan (episode 1), but I really like it. It's been a while since I've seen an anime that might become one of my top favorites. I'm looking forward to the combo pack.

I'm also looking forward to Digimon Savers volume 1 (R2) and Kaleido Star: New Wings DVD's. My Saiyuki Reload boxset will be shipped, too.

The pink one? What do you mean? I have all of the R2 PK releases, which are nothing short of amazing, and I would love to see something similar in the US (we can do without the frame and jewelry box, though). But what info is there on the R1 releases so far? Only thing I'm worried about is that I was pretty upset with some of Geneons half-season releases (like Hundred Stories), but I hope they've stopped that.

edit: oh crap.... I just envisioned trouble getting the Franz Ferdinand song rights in the US ala Speed Grapher. I really hope that doesnt happen.

To the topic creator:

Are you only looking for stuff thats going to just be released soon? You might want to look back to previous releases.

Yes, specifically in this case I am just looking at the stuff that is going to be released soon (fall/winter) to see what new series might appeal to me and whether or not the consensus is that they are worth investing in.

We kind of covered that in his mirror thread: http://animenation.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194991

Well no one was answering this thread so I went to the Ask John section... heh. Now all the activity is here. Basically I was trying to see what new titles were getting released this fall and which ones would probably appeal to me most. Shana and Ergo Proxy looked cool, but as I don't DL or watch fansubs, I don't have the "inside scoop" on stuff. Just wondered what folks thought of these series and if they didn't like them, what they'd recommend in their place. I even included a little section about shows I have really enjoyed and the things I tend to not wanna watch (like vampire stuff) as a "guide." I agree that there are probably some cool shows out there that have already hit the US and might even be cheaper releases and maybe I haven't discovered them yet, but in this particular instance I was just trying to get an evaluation of the upcoming shows I had eyed... whether they would be worth checking out or if they go downhill after the 4th episode or if they are more juvenile or what... yknow, just to get a feel for them. I was interested in Daphne in the Brilliant Blue before it came out even though a lot of people said it wasn't worth buying... I bought it and realized they were right... so just thought I'd see what folks thought were going to be breakout, quality releases in the next few months.

I was flipping through the latest Newtype USA at Borders today (I don't think the magazine is worth buying, waaay too expensive for what's inside, so I usually wait til someone else tears open the polybag at the bookstore and leaves a "reader's copy" behind) and there was a 2 page feature on Shana, with a little bit more about the storyline. Sounds kinda cool, I'll probably give this one a shot. I noticed the first volume comes with or without a cd, but is an artbox included?
