I remember reading it's one of the most expensive places to live in...Tokyo is at least.
I'm sure it's very crowded. In Tokyo at least.

what constitutes a "pro" varies from person to person, also japan in general has so many great things about it (as do most countries), that asking for a list would be almost impossible
i suggest you just do some research and make a list of what you consider to be "pros"

THE PLACE IS TOTALLY CLEAN!
Even though you'd have to walk like two or more blocks to find a trash can, the streets are surprisingly VERY clean.

I agree with Yoshio. One man's pro may be another man's con. A friend of mine, recently back from living there for a year, and I had the same discussion before he left. NHI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_welfare_in_Japan#Social_Insurance ) was a huge detractor for me, yet he liked the idea.

Uh... there's a lot of prostitution.
The bad news, is they only allow Japanese men into the *****-houses. Sorry.

They allow anybody into most ***** houses in Okinawa. Where there are people there is money to be earned.

Ahh, Dusty, you've seen the Red light District. I remember it well.
(And NO, I did NOT work there!)
Pro's of Japan..hmm..
Anime. Manga. J-Pop. Sumo. Short people. Great department stores. Great resturants.
You can dress up as Elvis and not get "The finger" thrown at you as you boogie in the middle of the street.
And I can "blend in" with the population and get ignored.
Oh..and you can also scream "Ninja!" and about a billion Japanese people will turn around and say.."O-su!" and not kill you.

Why are people getting so technical, just asking for some pro's.
Regardless if it's one mans pro.

Did I get technical? If so, I apologize.
My humour lacks what it used to be.

That's the thing, it really is a completely personal thing. Are we talking about just visiting Japan? Or are we talking about long term stay, jobs, permanent residency, or possibly trying to get citizenship?
Several pros for me going are its history and culture - both of which have interested me since I was young. Another is, as geeky as it sounds, is my interest in anime and manga; so spending a couple of days carousing around Akihabara would be in order. Just going for a vacation, because it's always a conversation starter, would be nice. After seeing it portrayed in so many different ways through various media, I'd like to see what it's really like. I can probably do all of that in about 3 weeks.
However, staying in Japan longer, outside of a job in/with the US Air Force or working on location for an American company in Japan, are a no-go for me. I like Japan's work ethic, but getting down to the nitty gritty about jobs, salaries, cost of living, and taxation - the whole deal becomes a negative for me. I've visited the UK, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany - I loved my vacations there, but for the same reasons as Japan, I wouldn't live there. I also plan on going back to all of those places sometime. I like Japan enough that its on the list for my next overseas vacation, but I don't like it enough to take the plunge and live and work thier full time for my career.

A career in japan, sounds like an episode of fear factor.

Why do you think J-pop is a con?
This supports my opinion in the beginning of this thread.
C'mon guys, there are no "pros" and "cons". I love j-pop, so it's a huge pro. But some Korn-fan otaku may not like it, so it's a con.
If you're really interested about Japan, then get a book and learn, don't trust the wapanese on an anime board.

I will never understand people that say American pop is bad then go listen to J Pop which mind you most people do not even understand. J Pop is just as bad if not worse then American pop. Just as shallow

Why do you think Jpop is shallow?
Ok, if you are talking about stuff like Morning Musume, Ayumi Hamasaki or even any kind of multiple girl/boy group, then you are right. Some J-pop is just as shallow as any type of American pop.
I don't listen to most of the popular stuff, but I listen to stuff like Sheena Ringo, and Bonnie Pink. Sheena can be compared to Alanis Morissette because of her high vocals and bad attitude. Bonnie Pink is well.....well she is kind of unique and Folk artsy, but is pop sounding as well.
My point is this. Listen to much less mainstream Jpop artists, then form an opinion on J-pop. Jpop can be shallow depending on what kind of artists you are listening to.

Shallow is relative, guys.
I hate it when people say something is shallow because it wasn't written with some emo lyrics in a garage in the ghetto.
Listen to what you like, don't let anyone tell you it's not good. Artists aren't popular because people are idiots and like crappy music; they're popular because people like their music.
Anyway... this is off-topic...

Actually most of the great songs are not written in a garage. Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Elvis, Billy Holiday, Joy Division, Hank Williams Sr all wrote or had their songs written professionally. They were not some band who plays off key writeing poetry a 4th grader would be ashamed of. Nor are they fluff bunnies who set random disorginized lyrics to a happy beat and look cute so they get a pass from fans.

Explain Vanilla Ice, Britanny Spears, Wing, Ect.

^ Catchy songs come out in terms of beat, and they're popular. Not that the lyrics are any good. People just like music that makes them comfortable, and don't usually like stuff that challenges them to think.

well maybe thats why non japanese anime fans like to listen to jpop. they like the different style and they more then likly cant understand it so they dont have to focus on how stupid they lyrics may sound translated
but since ive never been to japan i cant realy say what the pros are but if i had to i would say the high availability of video games and anime.

1)Having access to amazingly good food and excellent sake. Eating fresh fish whenever I want.
2)Going to a shiatsu clinic and being able to choose from a full menu of options depending on my needs at the time.
3)Indulging in the traditional bath/o-furo. Letting the hot water soak my tired body until I'm completely relaxed.
4)The efficiency of the transportation system. Knowing that 99 percent of the time, trains/buses, etc. will be on time to get me to where I need to go.
5)Excellent customer service. Most establishments excel at this art form.
