So, Pretty soon, I'm going to buy more box sets. I'm looking for some new ones to get. I was thinking something along the lines of Chrono Crusade, and maybe Abenobashi. Any ideas? I like a wide vierity. Stuff like Slayers, Rune Soldier, Peacemaker, the actiony and serious type are always cool.

Also, if they could be a little cheap, that would be good too.

Hmm....maybe Kino's Journey? It's a very serious anime with some action. It is also quite thought-provoking at some parts.

I just bought the Box Set of Kino's Journey. I love that series. I saw it a long time ago, and bought it last week.

Excel Saga became a thinpak a couple of days ago.

Does the thinpack have the ADVidnotes? If not, then just get the regular box set. It has lots of other extra stuff as well.

And for Abenobashi, I highly recommend it, but I recommend the thinpack. Abenobashi is definitely worth the money for the extras which include Vid Notes, scripted outtakes (which are hilarious, IMO) and booklets with each volume.

Yeah, I usually try and get thinpacks. The box sets I have except for Lain are all thin.

I was thinking abut getting Gravion - Complete Collection, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - Complete Collection, Steam Detectives - Complete Collection, and Zone of the Enders - Complete Collection. Sound good?

Make sure you get the 4 disc Abenobashi thinpak, the 3 disc one has a lot less stuff IIRC. Though if you only care about the series itself, the 3 disc should be fine.

There is no 4-disc thinpack. The single DVDs are spread across 4 discs, but there is only one thinpack and it is stripped of all the extras.

Well, the only extras I really care about are the Noir ones. I usually don't watch dubs or interviews, so I would be okay without them on the Thinpack set. Cheaper too.

There is still the vidnotes though. That helps point out a lot of the stuff that is being parodied. And sometimes the vidnotes are jokes themselves.

And the outtakes are still worth it. Same with the booklets which have nothing to do with the dub, just the show in general.

What were the Noir extras you are talking about?

Well, then i mean the one that had 4 discs in one box and the cases were really thin...

That's what a thinpack is. And there is only one.

I can't find out how many discs it is, but it should be 3. And it seems like it does have the vidnotes (according to another online retailer description) but it won't have anything else beyond the typical clean OP & ED and previews (which isn't an extra).

Hmm, you may be right. Heres the details i got from searching the UPC code:

Region 1
3-DVD Box Set (Thinpak)
Keep Case
Audio:
Dolby Digital 2.0 - Japanese
Dolby Digital 5.1 - English
Subtitles - English - Optional
Additional Release Material:
Trailers - ADV Previews
DVD 1: MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBASHI - VOL. 1
DVD 2: MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBASHI - VOL. 2: IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD ALTERNATE WORLD
DVD 3: MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBASHI - VOL. 3: IMPRACTICAL MAGIC
DVD 4: MAGICAL SHOPPING ARCADE ABENOBASHI - VOL. 4: THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Kinda wierd, says 4 dvds, but 3 disc... Ive checked a whole buncha legit sites, most say 4, some say 3. Both seem to range from $28-$30, its $30 on Animenation's site.

The thing is, ADV always reduces the volume count for their thinpacks. If a series had 7 single DVDs, it gets 5 discs in the thinpack. The only ones that keep the same disc count are the original three thinpacks (Noir, FMP, and Rahxephon) and Gantz (probably because it was the same as the regular release and contained the extras). And the thinpacks usually don't have the volume titles except in the aforementioned cases.

Either it contains all the extras and the original disc count (unlikely as there is nothing mentioned on the case) or its just a mistake on some of the websites.

Lets talk about Gungrave shall we? Yeah, it might be a bit more expensive then most thinpaks are going for now, but it's one of the greatest shows to come out within recent years. Do yourself a favor Videl and pick this bad boy up.

But if you're looking for chea then I'll suggest something cool like Astro Boy. The 80's version thinpak is dirt cheap and includes about 50 episodes of goodness.

I've heard good things about Gungrave. I might just take your word for that. Astro Boy...that can wait. It's cool, but there's other anime I want more. Your list has been quite a help to me so far though, so I know if you say it's good, it's good.

Although I think Battle Athletes Victory needs to be considered a "masterpiece."

 I love Battle Athletes. The way my list works is maybe a bit different from most people. If it's got a "very good" next to it then you damn well better believe I think the series is quality stuff. Very good being the start of my favorite series. It might suffers a bit with the last disk of episodes. *shrugs* I've seen the show twice, but now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen it since 2002. :O Since I'm a rewatch maniac that's just not acceptable and maybe a third viewing will boost it up to "excellent". We shall see!

The Astro Boy recommendation was totally random. It's really not a show for everyone and there are probably tons of series you would like more. Just check the list. ;)

I've added a lot of the anime from your list to my wish list on DVD Aficionado. City Hunter is on there. I want to see that bad. I need to watch BAV again. I mean, I have three BAV art books, all the DVD's, and all the manga of the series. Yeah, I ned to see it again.

You want to watch City Hunter!?!?! You'll have to excuse me for being a bit shocked... Well damn that's an amazing choice if I may say so myself. Here's the deal. City Hunter is broken up in a few shows (while all it does is continue) just like Sailor Moon for example. City Hunter is now long out of print. City Hunter 1 (2 boxsets/51 episodes) is very easy to find. Your best bet is ebay actually as you can get it for very cheap on any given day. City Hunter 2 is also pretty easy to find. (2 boxsets/63 episodes). City Hunter 3 is were it gets REALLY TRICKY! Both City Hunter 3 and City Hunter 91 are so damn hard to find these day. Hell, I don't even have City Hunter 91 yet (watched my brothers set originally). Both are only 13 episodes each, but cost more then both CH 1 & 2 put together most times. There are a bunch of movies, specials and OVAs to watch as well. All of them are easy to find. The last movie isn't licensed (best one imo) and might never be, but you can find it to download easily.

City Hunter is as episodic as it comes. Most comparable to Lupin III, where you just NEVER get tired of it and could watch it for years and years. So buying CH1 just to see if you like it and then taking a break for even a year wouldn't matter at all. You'd just pick up where you left off. I love this show so much and if my sig wasn't edited down my a certain person you'd still see it there a #15. I have to stop rambling about this now or I'll never shut up. Like a friend of mine once said. City Hunter = Love.

I could go on about BAV and SM like you do City Hunter.

I've heard a lot about it, and I want to get into older anime, and not all this new stuff. (Still haven't seen that Haruhi show). But I found some of the box sets. I think when I have enough money to spare, I'll get it. I still want Outlaw Star though.

I'm always thrilled when I hear/see someone expressing wanting to get into the classics older anime. Well, City Hunter is definitely both of those. Most people seem to be in love with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but to me it was just another series. A good one at that, though maybe I'd appreciate it more if I wasn't into anime as long as I have been. I'd still recommend it as it's good stuff just not something I'm about to go crazy over. Newer anime has a charm of it's own, but I'll always prefer older anime dating back to the 70's-90's most of all. I really love it when I can honestly say that a newer series is one of my favorites or atleast something I can add to the list of great series.

Same here. A lot of this newer anime is inspired by the older stuff. (The Sailor Moon refrence in the first episode of Fushigi) BAV is my favorite anime, and that was late 97' in Japan.

Older stuff is always great. I have more older aime in my collection than I do newer. I got Cyberteam too. Although I think that's an older one.
