View Full Version : EVA Offspring

Seems like EVA is hitting that ripe old age where it gets honorable mentions in various popular anime. For example the idea of Instrumentality was mentioned in the last episodes of GITS SAC 2, where Kuze moved to load all refugee souls onto the Net, creating a godlike form to "rise above" the rest of mankind. This is hotly debated by the Tachikoma, and the question of whether individuality would continue is unanswered. Ultimately, the success of the endeavour hung on the issue of whether the human essence, or "Ghost", would be retained...

I thought that was pretty blatant. Any other sightings?

The Eva references in Sergeant Frog are too numerous to mention:

Oops, I forgot. The Tachikoma, which seems like an original concept, happens to be an inverse of Instrumentality: Individual personalities evolving from a single consciouness and getting their own souls.

Why, lookie, it's GNR. Even the hair is right.

I think I considered changing it to NGE and then changed my mind and just added a smiley face... I think.

That's not an NGE reference. Evangelion didn't invent the concept of Instrumentality, it borrowed it from Ideon. And Tomino probably took the idea from some older science fiction novel.

(Oh crap, I was about to suggest Foundation and Earth as one of the many possible influences, but then I noticed it was written in 1986. :uhh: Asimov's cash cow... )

Yep, that's a side-ways on Ideon gauge there (the green E-thing, for the uninitiated).

Possible points on the NGE family tree include Vinge's Marooned in RealTime (1986), Clarke's Childhood's End (1953), Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker (1938) and Last and First Men (1933), which latter tapped into the 1930s speculative zeitgeist. There are many other possible parents; these are just the ones I can bring to mind to cite at a few minute's notice.

The SEELE-style monoliths are more unambiguously an NGE reference in Keroro Gunso.

A random scene from the (late 1990s) videogame Eve Burst Error.

It's just what it looks like when you enter the school canteen and there are people present. Bears no relevance to the story whatsoever.

I bet you that's Amuro in the back. C'mon, take the bet. Oh wait, we're talking EVA characters, not Gundam...

I'm thinking Tomino got the idea from Buddhism, but then I could be wrong. If anyone has an earlier sci-fi source for what happened in Ideon/Eva's Instrumentality, feel free to point it out :P

And Cordwainer Smith's 'The Instrumentality of Mankind' although the experts will have to let me know if it was just the name that Anno took, or if there was other themes contained in there as well. Have never gotten a chance to read it.

While the Instrumentality's governing/guiding council of ancient humans has some generic resemblance to SEELE, there is no real parallel to the most obvious motif, the animal derived underpeople. Nor really to Smith's refined Catholicism.

Burst Angel could be considered Eva if Rei and Asuka had guns, and then there's the unforgetable Burn Up episode that was basically an Eva piss take, replete with woman's (well girl's) spirit trapped in purple robot.

Not really, because Burst Angel isn't really anything like Eva, and Meg isn't really anything like Asuka. Jo is quiet at times like Rei, but then again at times Jo is also extremely aggressive, something we don't see from Rei. Although the one notable similarity is that the red haired characters, Meg and Asuka both have wildly inconsistent breast sizes...

You have to admit though that Jo is more like Rei than most of the RIAO stuff out there. And someone who didn't know better would see Jo and think it's Rei.

There's a lot more than just that snippet : there are Sound-Only monoliths, and a generous couple of nods to Ideon (Keron gauge, the 9999...999∞ power rating) in the rest of episode 48.

I hate to post significant responses that will more then likely get lost in a flood but nonetheless, the entire concept of human instrumentality is based upon the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

Dual is an unholy parody amalgamation of Tenchi Muyo, GOS and RahXephon (in a thematic sense, of course; I know Dual was made before Rah, so STFU). But it indeed seems to be a rather badly known series.

Ya, I know that at least, :naughty: . I just figured they did that on purpose. Your right though, it could just be coincidental. But you have to admit, after the way we meet her in the series, it would make a good name for an aircraft carrier.

The name of the aircraft carrier in #08, "Over the Rainbow", is an in-joke reference to the character Asuka Mizunokouji (http://www.furinkan.com/uy/characters/asuka.htm), and her secret base, which is code-named "Over the Rainbow", in Urusei Yatsura.

Completely random trivia: The Admiral we see in that episode is voiced by the same guy who does Akuma's voice in the Street Fighter games (forget his name at the moment).

In related news it seems like the majority of the Eva crew like to work together. As well as Eva most of the VAs have done Gunsmith Cats, Burn Up, some other anime I cannot place. In fact GSC is a fun 'spot the voice' anime, with Rei, Asuka, Shinji, Misato, Gendou, Fuyutsuki, Hikari and others playing the characters.

I mentioned a slightly more plausible NGE reference in Macross Zero over here (http://animenation.net/forums/showpost.php?p=4793763&postcount=30). Shoji Kawamori sure likes them there Sepirothic Systems (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/Dr-Nick/sightings/aquarion_sepiroth.jpg). <- Image from Aquarion, a show that mixes Getter Robo, Escaflowne and funky recreational drugs.
