ok, so has anyone else noticed how riddiculously cheap japanese/chinese buffets can be.

a $10 buffet with all you can eat large snow crab legs, frog legs, sushi, assorted fishes, stuffed crabs. Do you know the market price of snow crab? how do these people make buisness. The have caviar sushi, california rolls, some other stuff I have no idea about. I must have taken atleast 3 plates of snow crab back to my table.

The most unbelievable thing is when the snow crabs are out (every 30 mins.) they bring out more... Where is all this food coming from. It makes no sense to me. All the fried rice, dumplings, noodles, pork, beef, lamb, WTF??

It is just inconcievable.

-another story-

this wasn't a buffet, but I was in China town in London. So me and my friends go to a chinese resturaunt. I see, hmm some cheap stuff. So I order the special fried rice, like 5 pounds. WTF??? how much stuff can you put on a plate. My friend ordered the special fried rice with some beef dish, I swear they were hiding cown in the kitchen.

so heres what I think:

1) the buffet is run by chinese people, perhaps japanese (can't tell by the employees), and they are getting cheap imported fish from China/Japan.

2) their employees are illegal/family. I know for a fact it is a family though.

3) maybe I'm hallucinating T.T

Well usually at all you can eat places, the food isn't of good quality. So they probably just buy a large amount of ingredients at discounted prices.
Since you're in the UK, they are more than likely illegal chinese (i hear you guys get a lot) and yes they probably are related or came on the same boat.

I'm not in the UK, just a frequent traveler. -_-;

Buy snow crabs in mass quantities all you want, no way you can pull this off. They are just steamed, but so many for just $10 is riddiculous. The way they replenish their stock O.O

that's one hell of a discount.

how come no other cultural resturaunt does this?

well i could give the other answer: Its not crab. Its a bootleg crab. They're chinese after all. And if they can invent VCDs to get out of having to make DVDs, they can surely invent a fake crab to get out of having to serve real ones.

Actually, I think it is a mix of what's called Imitation Crab (hence part of the reason why real crab is even more expensive) but also that many of the other ingredients can be bought in even larger quantities at lower rates and offset the total cost of the crab/IC.

It depends on where I'm going and when I am going; the couple of my local traditional Japanese restaurants are fairly priced but still ends up kind of expensive while there are the buffet faux-Asian places around here, too. Depends on exactly what I am in the mood for and how much I am willing to spend in cash and travel time.

Refer to this thread for the reason the meat (http://www.animenation.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194796&page=1&pp=30) is so cheap

We have a few asian places around here. One Japanese/Korean BBQ. They dont have the best sushi in the country, but definately in the state probably. They flash freeze it so it is as fresh as it can be. That places get a bit expensive, with their udon, sushi, and various BBQ stuff.
Other than that we got a few buffets. which I sometimes go to. I tend not to trust them that much....

ya, I stay away from the raw muscles and clams and don't eat to much sushi... Snow crabs seem fine though cause the meat is still in side the leg... until you crack it and eat it up ofcourse :D
