I've watched the frist 40 episodes of the series, and I was wondering when do the movies take place(I don't want to watch them and have the series spoiled for me). How far along do I need to watch in the series before watching each movie?

Here is some info from Kuro's site that should answer your question, but for Movie 1 it should be after episode 54, not 53.

A: Honestly, there isn't that much in the way of spoilers in the movies, save for a few techniques/attacks and perhaps some (kind of obscure - or nitpicky) references. Here's where I figure are the most likely places for each of the movies to fit in (not that the gang could logically fit all this into their busy in-between-canon-storyline schedule, what with all that Shikon shard hunting, getting sword upgrades, and the occasional run-in with Naraku... but logic doesn't always fit in this world, now does it.)

Movie 1: (Toki o Koeru Omoi) - after episode 53
Movie 2: (Kagami no Naka no Mugenjou) - after episode 74, definitely before 145, at least... :P
Movie 3: (Tenka Hadou no Ken) - after episode 82 (-ish), may even be after 132
Movie 4: (Guren no Houraijima) - after episode 157, probably likely after 167 (final anime episode)

Huh? I was sure that it was more like:

Movie 1: After ep 54 (the Ryuukossei two-parter)
Movie 2: After ep 95 (or somewhere right around there)
Movie 3: Somewhere in the 130s
Movie 4: After the entire series

EDIT: Ok, here are the pages on ANN with the official airdates of the Japanese episodes, and of the movie theatrical releases: series (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=159&page=25), movie 1 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=294), movie 2 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2141), movie 3 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2981), and movie 4 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4228).

Movie 1's premiere is 12/22/01. That puts it between episodes 55 and 56 (which aired on 12/12/01 and 01/14/02, respectively).

Movie 2's premiere is 12/21/02. That puts it between eps 95 and 96 (which aired on 12/09/02 and 01/13/03).

Movie 3's premiere is 12/20/03. That puts it between eps 136 and 137 (which aired on 12/08/03 and 01/12/04).

Movie 4's premiere is 12/23/04. That puts it well after ep 167, the series finale. (which aired on 09/13/04).

There you have it. ;)

I think someone should try making this a sticky. At least once every other month, a thread asking about the placement of the InuYasha movies within the series pops up. (Not to ridicule those who post these threads; I'm just stating a fact.)

Yeah I was feeling lazy and didn't want to do a search. :P I can get a reply almost faster than I can do a search. Thanks for the info though, it's been a big help(I was going to wait until I saw the entire series before watching any of the movies).

Yeah, all of the movies are really side stories. You can probably watch them just about anywhere, except make sure you've seen through ep 54 before seeing 1-3, and through ep 157 before seeing the 4th one. Ep 54 reveals the Bakuryuuha ("Exploding Dragon Blast", poorly dubbed as "Backlash Wave"), and 157 reveals Kongousouha ("Diamond Spear Blast", dubbed as "Adamant Barrage").
