He was an MMA/ Pride/K-1 type fighter (Reidar would know better than I what org he was with) who went to Japan to compete. Being that Sapp is absolutely huge and black, he stands out more than your average gaijin. He started making tons of appearences on variety shows playing the role of what I call "the Goofy Gaijin" and eventually got a record deal with a hit single, Sapp Time!. All of that is up to 2003 and to be honest, I've been out of much of the pop culture loop in Japan over the past couple of years, so I have no real clue in estimating his popularity there.

"He gives black men a bad example in Japan" that's what I used to think... and that goofy gaijin stuff pissed me off, that's why I wanted to go over there and see what it was like. Luckily, what people had been saying about the stereotypes that Japanese people gained from Sapp turned out false, of course.
Edit: Sapp is cool. I just want to see him survive my Windscar!!!

Yeah, it pissed me off for all of fourty-five seconds. Some it is, to me, was genuinely funny.

There are some funny parts, but still, if you hate a show, there has to be atleast some qualities you find funny in it. (For example, KND's DBZ parody. I hate KND, but that was sweet FAH.) :P

Me and a co-worker where discussing MMa and K-1 matches at work the other day. ANd we noticed a lot of the americans that go over there get beat pretty badly, I've seen some damn hardcore beatings dealt out by little korean or japanese guys, and one girl. Sapp was a preetty tough fighter but I think he lost his 15 minutes of fame

I've noticed that the European fighters (especially the Dutch ones) tend to be the most successful in K1. Thai boxing is huge in Holland from what I hear.

Hi Guys
Bob Sapp also tried his hand at pro wrestling with NJPW i think he even won the title but i could be wrong .I think Inoki had it bad for guys who are MMA fighters he also put alot of his wrestlers up against shoot fighters and i believe the wrestlers came off second best. Theres also a funny video with Bob Sapp going around a japanese zoo and somebody keeps giving him a cardboard cut out of Nakanishi and this music starts and Sapp takes off his shirt and snaps the cardboard cut out in half. :)

Yeah Ologun was a bigger butthead than Sapp and was hated by most of the black men I know in Japan...
