basically, there was an interview with Rumiko Takahashi and she said that the "most important part of the manga is still invisible" and that even though she sees the ending "roughly" in sight, she still doesnt have any idea how it will end and what will happen to each character and that the manga still has lots of time ahead.

Well, that's good news for people who want to see a lot more of InuYasha and aren't keen on the series ending. On the other hand, it's bad news for people who think the series shouldn't extend past 500 chapters (which it looks like it might). It's also bad news for our wallets. Personally, I'm not entirely sure what to think of this. I guess whether or not I like the fact that InuYasha is not ending anytime soon depends on where Takahashi takes the story from here.

My question is how much time has passed between that interview and when it was posted on the internet. If it was in January I'd believe it. If it was 2 weeks ago I'd say no way in hell. With the departure of two significant side characters and the possible disappearance of a third I don't see how she can keep the series going. Right now is the climax of the story. To drag it out now would be utter foolishness. Then again that hasn't stopped Takahashi before.

I wonder if this will delay the second anime series...

I doubt there will be a second anime series. It's been two years. There mayve a movie to conclude this but there won't be another tv series.

There wouldn't be all those deadlines to meet, so the animators can take their time and produce something of much better quality, and there wouldn't be the time restraints of a movie, so the animators can focus on details.

I'm not so sure, since ANN's trivia page (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=159&page=22) mentions the producer of the anime hinting at a second series.
"After 167 episodes, Sunrise Inc. decided to end the animated show and release the conclusion to the story in manga (Japanese comic books). But, on a radio talk show, the Producer of the show announced that they only ended the first series of the show. Hinting that a second series will be coming soon."

An OAV will probably allow the animators more time (and a larger budget, maybe), so they can produce something of much better quality--hopefully, something with the same animation quality as some of the movies (though not the first one--the animation quality in the first movie sucked).

i believe that in chapter 400 it said that the series was AIMING to end at 500.. and given the current storyline i would say that it will end sooner than that.

I heard that Rumiko Takahashi plans on reaching 500 chapters before ending it, sort of like what the Simpsons are planning to do (going up to 21 seasons)

^Yes, that's true. Takahashi plans on reaching 500 chapters before ending the series, and the way things look right now, she may very well end it at chapter 500.

Well just read up to the latest chapters (thanks Mikadzuki!). I kinda took a break from Inuyasha for a while, so I was wondering, why did the anime stop if the manga is still going? It seems like the latest chapters are getting very good. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have been out of the loop for a while. ;)

The only answer we can come up with right now is that it just wasn't worth it for Studio Sunrise to continue animating the series at the time - they kept catching up to the manga and had to waste episodes on fillers - so they ended it, and gave it an open-ended ending. However, rumours have it that Sunrise may decide to produce a second InuYasha series, perhaps after the manga is complete.

i too want inuyasha to end someday, but i definitely don't want a forced ending or too much of a tragic ending to make it all dramatic and violent. but knowing takahashi's calibre, i don't think it'll walk the harry potter road. harry potter simply sucks nowadays, with an overdose of unnecessary tragedy and melodrama.
