Title is self-descriptive, but I'll state my reasoning.
My friend recently got back from a trip from Japan, and bought me some DVDs which of course are in Japanese and are region 2 DVDs... I'm looking for a DVD player that can play these as well as R1 and any region really, but mainly just those two.
I can play it on my computer no problem, just looking for a good region free DVD player. The one I have now is kind of crappy, and I need something new anyway.

Most Philips players have a code that you can enter on the handset to switch regions.

If you have a PS2, there's DVD Region X that allows you to play Japan DVD's. No modification is necessary and it's easy to use. I used to have one and it worked perfectly.

No PS2. :) (Yes, I am happy about that...)
I wouldn't want to get in the hassle of contantly changing codes just to play various DVDs (as mentioned by Soluzar). Though if that is all that is out there I guess it may be the path I take.

i believe there are programs out there to rip the dvd w/o region coding so you can burn a fresh copy to watch on your regular player.

Yea seriously, just use Google
Theres a hack for pretty much every DVD player out.
However since im in the UK i invested in a region free player a few years back. The model i brought is a Pioneer DV-350. Its discontinued now and mine is pretty old but i swear its a gem. It plays anything you put in it and ive never had ANY troubles. Great stuff

It's actually not much of a problem. For most discs, including every anime DVD I've tried, you can use Region 0. Some discs won't play on Region 0 players, though, so you have to switch it to 1 (US) or 2 (Japan and Europe) for those titles.

I would recommend the Phillips DVP 642. I got this player for fansubs since it play divx and for some R2 dvd's i got and it plays everything excellently. Its also really cheap, like 50-60 bucks in most places. Under 50 in some stores ive seen. To make it region free u do the following:
1. Turn on the player and open the dvd tray
2. Then on your control press 7 8 9 ok 0
3. Enjoy region free dvd player
So after u put in this code u can play dvds from any region without having to change the code all the time.

Except discs with "Enhanced Region Protection", which won't play on a Region 0 player, as I said above. There are quite a few of them coming out of Hollywood.
