Gainex ran out of money. A more detailed way of putting it was Anno had this grand ending planned but ran into a number of walls, such as budget, time and censorship. The people funding Eva were already jittery at some of the content (the uber violent fight scenes with buckets of blood and the Misato\Kaji sex scene airing without approval) and for the last two episodes something like End of Evangelion was planned, so Anno had this alternate ending. As for the ending itself, it's basically a tell me version of Instrumentality, as well as trying to tie up the other characters, the main ones at least. EoE is the show me ending that has all the juicy, gory details if you think you can handle it.

No kiddin'? People on this forum have been striving to understand everything for years. They're going to want to ask you a lot of questions.

First watch End of Evangelion, as stated it's the version of 25 and 26 that Anno originally had in mind. Watch EoE, and then come back with questions. You'll still be confused, but it may at least save you the wrath of some people, and you might understand a bit more.

Or it may confuse you even further, depending on whether you do something such as, say, read deeply into the minds of the characters and their motivations.

You need to see the movie End of Evangelion to make sense of it all; the movie shows what going on in the external world as Third Impact comes about, while the TV ending is more the subjective internal experience of 3I, mostly from Shinji's POV, since he's at the center of it all...

One consciousness... You know, that always freaks me out. I'd rather everyone die and be dead than fuse with everyone soul on Earth... man...

^You probably wouldn't be able to tell what's happening either way.
