Well, I usally buy single DVD's from Ebay. I shy away from box sets. If you're really freaked, always read the comments before you buy from someone. That way, you can search for somebody saying "it was a bootleg."
Otherwise, not everyone is bad on there. I got all the Battle Athletes series from ebay, and it was fine.

Sometimes I buy from Ebay when I see a really good deal like when I bought all of Bubblegum Crisis 2040 the Essential Anime for $16($20 after shipping).
But that site is so flooded with bootlegs that it can be hard to find R1 DVDs<_<

I buy a lot of anime off ebay, you just gotta know what to look for.
Its been stated many a time on this board (just search for "bootleg"). But here are the main bootleg flags:
Region 0 or Region "all"
Chineese subtitles
An enormous amount of episodes per dvd (most common is 26 episodes on 3 dvds).
Also, if the item is 1 penny with $29.99 shipping, those are usually bootlegs too.
Just make sure that the dvds are region 1 (or 2 if youre looking for an import). Also if they have a real picture (not just a stock cover picture) helps a lot too.

I bought my M.D.Geist DVDs on eBay. Normally I stay away from there to avoid bootlegs, but in this case I thought, "It's M.D.Geist. Who cares?"

I remember the first dvd I bought of eBay was a bootleg. But after that I became wiser. I've bought several dvds after that and they all turned out to be good.
If you're looking to sell some of your anime on eBay, I'd say go for it. There are plenty of fans looking to buy legit dvds. They'll find your auctions among the bootlegs ^_^

If you're selling anime on eBay, I suggest you stick with the legit copies. Otherwise, the buyer might not be too happy getting copies that are booties! ^_^ I've bought booties before but knew what I was getting. There's plenty of negative feedback on eBay from disgruntled buyers who even reported the seller to eBay. Oh, to answer your question, I have bought Japanese animation and merchandise from eBay before. :P

i buy lots from ebay, gotten some great deals. if you're planning to sell, my advice is to mention "Region 1" (if are indeed USA products, don't say it if not) in the title and repeat it again in the description. that's what i always look for and it immediately weeds out most of the bad listings for buyers. if you can, upload a personal picture of the items instead of relying on the stock photo, this again let's people know they are getting an official product. and please, be reasonable with shipping costs! it breaks my heart to see sellers tossing out $7+ just to ship 1 disc using media mail or first class. i know it's to offset the fees but come on!

Or you could not do that:
Do not include links in your posts or your signature to other anime retailers... sites that sell bootlegs... We ask that you do not create posts that advertise an AnimeNation competitor.

What he really should do is list the Item #'s then all people would have to do is copy and paste them in the search.

Also, if the item is 1 penny with $29.99 shipping, those are usually bootlegs too.
I can see why you might think that, but high shipping charges have nothing to do with bootlegs and everything to do with ebay's fee system. Since shipping charges are exempt from some fees, many sellers push the actual prices over into the shipping column in order to keep their costs down. This used to be a pain for buyers because it wasn't always easy to see what an item was going to cost out-of-pocket from some listing screens. However, ebay changed their format to include the cost of shipping on most listing screens, so now it's easy to see the total price even if 99% of it is coming from the shipping charge.
I have sold fully legitimate anime on ebay on numerous occasions and over time I've started to push the bulk of my prices into the shipping column as ebay continues to raise their fees. Someday we may have a true alternative to ebay with lower fees, but until then you can expect experienced sellers to do what they can to keep their costs down and their profits up.

I was wondering also about buying anime DVDs from ebay. I'm rather hesitant about buying from ebay since a few of my friends bought stuff from ebay that wasn't even the real thing. Recently though I've been looking for single DVD volumes on ebay and some that I've seen on there are the real thing. Just got to be careful.

This is how ebay usually is (for anime, at least): If it looks too good to be true, don't get it.

If you're careful you can find some real deals. I got my first two Marmalade Boy DVD sets there for about $25 and $40, as compared to the $60+ in other places, and all 3 Risky/Safety DVDs for about $25.

I was mainly referring to all the Buy It Now auctions that do penny for the item and $30-40 for shipping. Ive yet to see a legit one listed like that. Then you also have the people who tack on another $15-20 of required insurance ($1000 insurance costs $11.75, not many of the penny + shipping BIN items are worth more than $1,000)
But i do understand why people'll add on a few dollars to shipping. Its extremely rare these days to see people doing real pricing on shipping. Hell, even i tack on a few bucks, most for myself (to cover the charges paypal takes...), some to keep the bubble wrap & tape supply going.

I buy a lot of Anime VHS off of eBay. I recently bought some Fushigi Yugi and Ceres Celestial Legend VHS (VHS/DVD Combo for Ceres). And right now I am bidding on a couple of auctions for VHS lots.

I only go to eBay to look for rare DVD's, but I usually stay there too long and spend all of my money there (like this month). -_-;

If there's something I can't get at some place better (usually if it's OOP), I usually check eBay, but I've never bought anime from there. Almost all of it's bootlegs. eBay must be the chief breeding ground for pirated stuff.

I bought some VHS on Ebay because they were rare & not released on DVD. I got Giant Robo 6 VHS complete set, first dub. At the time it wasn't released DVD or planned.
I also got the rare Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy boxset subbed with original Japananese track. Which you won't see on DVD. The DVD release only has the new 5.1 Japanese track. Most of the original cast is in it but the acting sounds better in the old Japanese track. The sound effects were also changed in the DVD release to be more realistic, but I prefer the classic sound effects in the old track. The music is the most disapointing aspect of the new track though, they changed the music around & theres a lack of music. For example durring the scene where Amuro & Lalah Sune first meet, maybe the most magical scene in the anime. The original Japanese track has a great song durring that scene, but the new Japanese track has no music with just the sound of the rain.
Heres the clip in original track, its 7 mb:

The music doesn't start until 1 minute into the scene though.
