I've been dying for a good RPG to play on my DS, so I'm very excited about FFIII. Anyone else looking forward to it?

The game, yes. Playing it on a portable, no.
I hate RPGs on portables, but I will get it anyway... just hopefully the Wii will have a DS player so I'll be able to play it on the TV eventually.

I'm really looking forward to it. Lately, DS has been my favorite system to play. While I'm sitting at my computer, bored as hell, I can just swing my chair around, pick it up, and start playing. I've been waiting for an RPG to play on it, since RPGs are great for pick-up-and-play value.

I don't know about others, but I prefer remakes to ports. Heck I probably prefer them to the original.

FF1/2 Dawn of Souls I liked a lot, never bothered playing the originals though. In 2 they fixed the stat/leveling system to where it is one of my favorite. And they got rid of the limited spell use I disliked about 1.

I am not big on the character designs of 3, but it still looks interesting to me.

Yeah, I'd much rather have a full-fledged remake than a port.

I'll eventually get it when I get a DS. I'm not looking forward to it as much as other games, but I'm glad we will finally be able to play FFIII even if it is a remake and not a straight port.

you may be waiting a long time.

anyway...

I've been wanting this for months but have ended up happy it's been delayed because that original release date was going to kill me. There was like 5 must have DS games coming out on the original release date of Sept. 12.

Yes, it will be $40.
But the day is the same so far. It's Squeenix, and they can do whatever thay want, because people will pay for it.
I'm glad it's coming out on DS, because I can only play RPGs on handhelds. I'm super excited about FFIII, and i hate Final Fatasy.

Thats pretty interesting. Seeing as how FF art is usually just the logo on the cover at times in Japan. And now we're getting just a plain white cover. But then again, this may not be the final product. Maybe, maybe not.

The game is more important at this point anyway. Everyone should already have learned by now that America will never get anything good compared the Japanese.

I'm sorry, but a plain white background with a logo in the center is the worst idea for boxart ever. It's even worse than Phalanx (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_%28video_game%29). They should give us that kick-*** artwork like on the Japanese case.

In europe all the ff-boxarts where like that.

I think it's great, a simple boxart on the outside and on the inside a fantastic game.

I got this game on Thursday and it's great.

So far, I'm up to the Amur Underground Sewers and I have a Knight, Dragoon, Geomancer, and White Mage in my party.

Only thing I don't like about the game is that in order to progress, you're basically forced to level up your characters even when it seems unnecessary (since in dungeons there are no save points), taking a bit of the strategy out of the game. But other than that, it's a great purchase. ^_^

I bought FFIII tonight since Im almost done with FFXII. I saw the job classes available and I cannot wait to try Ranger, Thief, and BARD! Bard will help greatly in battle Im sure. =] I have always been fascinated with Ranger so thats a no brainer. And Thief has always been one of my favorite of the series. Scholar will be interesting.

FFXII is my Part 1 of Losing My Sanity series.. FFIII is Losing My Sanity Part 2..

That and a chunk out of my bank account. =P Im sure its worth it, though.

Nintendo DS is fully worth getting. That is, as long as you play lots of other genres as well as RPGs. I wouldn't even consider getting one just for the RPG selection, but if you like lots of types of game, then your only problem will be having the money for all the titles you want.

I fully intend on getting a DS, as I am interested in the Castlevania games as well (I loved SotN and I enjoyed the GBA ones). There are other games I am interested in as well.

The two big issues are time and money. Both are being sucked up by other games as well as various anime and manga. :cries:

To tell the truth, I like the game but IMO it was released at a bad time (After FFXII). This is also kinda the reason I'm not a big fan of the retro Final Fantasy's. I love the difficulty (I died like 5 times in the first 2 hours) but the storyline is almost non-existent.

I love my DS way more than I love my Wii if it makes you feel better. But then, it's pretty damn early for the Wii. Still, DS is pretty solid. Games like Mario Kart even play better than their console counterparts, and its a great distraction for company.

I'm with my folks this weekend, and for whatever reason the DS Lite and the Xbox 360 were a hit. Go figure. Though I must admit Okami, Twilight Princess, and FFXII (the games I'm playing at the moment), aren't the greatest company pleasers. They're fairly solo experiences.

Since we're on the topic, can you recommend any games I get for my DS? I bought it specifically for FF3 but am definitely not limited to it alone. I'm mostly into RPGs but the only two that interested me were Children of Mana and Magical Starsign...as for other games, well I've no idea what to look for. Mario Kart is definitely on my list, but what else? Phoenix Wright? Animal Crossing? Not sure what to get. Help? >_<

If you can find Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow, then yeah, that's one of the highest DS recommendations anyone can make. Also, Mario and Luigi: Partners In Time is another great DS title.

I was just looking at Dawn of Sorrow, actually. If I can find it then perhaps I'll be obliged to pick up. Also, isn't Portrait of Ruin coming out next month? I've always been a fan of the Castlevania series.

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=180197 Preorder Castlevanai PoR and get one of the sweetest extras ever for an american release of a video game. For FREE. No extra $10 price tag, only catch is you have to PREORDER it. May consist of you plopping $5 down towards it though.
I'll get FFIII DS later when it's cheap( in 2 years), got a lot of games to play now that I got a '360 and Live. (My gamertag is DeafSmith)

Back to the topic: I'm about 6 hours into FFIII and it's getting a little better, still no story, but job system is really fun to fool around with. I have a question though, In the game when you change jobs, it says something like "wait 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 battles before proper placement takes effect". What does that mean?

HitokiriShadow
November 24th, 2006, 10:14 PM
From what my friend/co-worker tells me, it means you have to fight a certain number of battles before you can use the job class's commands. Apparently they did that to discourage frequent job switching.

I'd just like to let you all know that the CV preorder bonus is not necessarily guaranteed at the moment. Right now it's pretty iffy if they're gonna get enough for everyone.

I had GameStop employees telling me that it was first-come, first-served and then from other people getting email responses from GameStop's customer service email mentioning that the bonus is on back order. It's pretty much a mess.

I'll be standing in front of GameStop release day to get mines nice and early and beat out anyone else that want's the bonus package.

Eh? The first to preorder don't get priority, do they? This package sounds pretty badass so if it's the first to come get their copy that get the extras then I'll be sure to get there as soon as the store opens. Though I'm sure it probably works differently at different GameStop locations...oh well, I'll just have to wait and see. OR ask my local GameStop employee. Hmm.

From what my friend/co-worker tells me, it means you have to fight a certain number of battles before you can use the job class's commands. Apparently they did that to discourage frequent job switching.

Actually, what it is is "crystal sickness," where you switch the job and the person whose job you switched has their stats go down temporarily. Then after a certain amount of battles, their stats go back up where they're supposed to be according to the job.

You can tell if someone is suffering from crystal sickness by checking the menu screen. By the character's portrait, if they're going through crystal sickness, it'll show a blue arrow pointing down. Once it's over the arrow will go away.

Lunay

I hate crystal sickness! Isn't it also called the job transition phase?

I have only played 7 hours so far but here are my opinions so far.

Minor complaints:

1) Dungeons seem rather too small and unchallenging. Hopefully, this will change as I continue to play.

2) They forcefully require you to play certain jobs to progress the story. This can be good or bad depending on the situation...

3) I hate tilting the camera. Titlting the camera in every area can get tedius...

*These complaints are just minor and my opinion may change as I continue to play..*

Compliments:

1) I love dual-wielding and hit combos. Hehe.

2) Arrows are comsumable - This can make the game slightly more challenging and realistic. I like it this way.

3) Nobuo Uematsu. Classic FF music for your listening pleasure.

Im having fun so far raising the first 7 jobs; Red Mage, Freelancer, White Mage, Black Mage, Warrior, Monk, and THIEF (I went to Castle Argus and Pick-locked its doors to find like 12 treasure chest.. Thief love).

I love the cute character design and its small action sequences as well.

Oh, thanks all. I actually figured it out a while ago, And it seems when a character job level is a certain amount, You can change on the fly.

Playing this game atm, but I only have a few complaints

Sooo many battles :( It seems like every half screen I walk, I get into a battle.

You can't farm job levels, and changing jobs is a pain since you have to fight it all back. I really don't know how people raise job levels on multiple classes with ease. It would seem like it would take a lot of time to do so.

I think thats it. Other than that, its a standard RPG, pretty cute, good graphics, etc. I'm lovin it though since I'm a huge fan of the oldies.

Yes, it does take a lot of time, but not as much as raising your characters actual level. Its actually really easy to raise job-level. All you need to do is have everyone Guard or use a defensive ability 6 or 7 times per enemy, and 'voila', gain a job-level. It can get tedious and repetitive, though. ;p

The older FF felt like character development was high lacking. If FF3 has bad character development, imagine the GB FF. (I played those and I can't remember much character development).

I don't think there was any character development in the series until FFIV, hence, III is lacking in that department. I really wasn't expecting the remake to make drastic changes to the story or character development.

@Danju - Adding you now.

Altema
December 26th, 2006, 09:40 PM
For some reason, I put importance on joblevel more than actual level. It felt like as the stronger I got in terms of level, so did my opponents. Example would be ODIN. I would fight that guy only to be killed by an attack that hit everyone for 1000. After beating other bosses and leveling up, my HP went from 700 to 1000, and I fought ODIN again. He hit me for 1300 this time.

Yeah, I have been guarding each battle, and farming levels that way, but its sooooo boring :(.

This is my first time playing the series, but I was not expecting any character development because I have played FF of long ago, and they did not have any character development as well.

Lunay
December 26th, 2006, 10:01 PM
^ Hmm, I never noticed the mobs grew stronger as your characters rose in level.. If its true, I actually prefer it that way. Im trying to raise my characters actual level, not job-level, to 99 because of Onion Knight. Their stats are insane when your level is 95+. That and I need all the HP I can get to fight Iron Giant. But, yeah, it can get boring. Old-school grinding to the max. ;p

Sure he didn't hit you with a crit? I'm fairly sure enemies don't level with you; I've gone back to starting areas and completely massacred the poor low-level mobs. Perhaps bosses level with you? That would be kind of cool, in my opinion, since it woud ensure that certain bosses have a certain level of difficulty.

^ Its also possible to send Master Smith Cards to other people, which is gotten at some point during the game, when you have raised your characters 'job' level to 99 and have completed certain quests. These cards are used to obtain special weapon or armor for each job.

Mine is 2835 - 5273 - 8290. I'll add Simon and Demon when I can.

I can't find the Master Smith. I did all the things I have to do, and I'm on Princess Sara's quest and I talked to Takka and he was like GO FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO FIX THE PENDANT. I went to North East Saronia, in fact, ALL of the Saronias, and I can't find her ANYWHERE. I need help bad D:

She won't appear until you have defeated Garuda and have obtained the Invincible airship. I also tried to do that quest too early, and like you, couldn't find her anywhere.

I can go beat the cloud right now and end the game.. I have nothing else to do but the final dungeon and the secret dungeon, which I can go to, but die at the Iron Giant.

SO: I've defeated the Garuda AGES Ago. Am level 51. Have the invincible, and the Nautilus, and I've searched EVERYWHERE in Saronia, and can still not find her. Oh and did I mention I have 3 level 99 jobs? So I'm stuck with 3 un-rewarded level 99 jobs, and an unfixed Sara's Pendant.

First of all, I didn't know how far into the game you were. Second, Im just trying to help but its hard without knowing all of the necessary information, which leads to myself asking more questions, so bare with me:

Did you send/receive 4 letters each from Sara, Cid, and Takka?
If not, you probably need to send more letters to your friends before you can recive the 4th letter.

If you have done that, the Blacksmith should be in Northwest Saronia (all the way to the right between the tree and the building). Its very hard to miss so look thoroughly.

Good luck.

Im sorry. Im not angry either if I came off that way. ^^;

But, yeah.. Did you send/receive 4 letters from each of those characters? If you need me to spam your Mognet inbox, please feel free to add me.

Im sorry to say but you need to receive 7 letters from real people, otherwise, you cannot continue with this quest. Find a friend with FFIII DS or head over to Starbucks or McDonalds and one of us can spam you. Or maybe find a hotspot in your neighborhood. ;p

Edit: Oops.. you live in Osaka? Does Starbucks and McDonalds in Japan provide free internet connection?

I have 7 letters in my inbox. 8 to be exact. I have 2 DS's and 2 FFIII cartrages.

Not to mention, I live in the "aging" part of Osaka and not many people carry around english FFIII DS game packs.

You can finish this quest, then! Just send up to 4 letters to Cid and Takka and you should be able to find the Blacksmith.

Not to mention, I live in the "aging" part of Osaka and not many people carry around english FFIII DS game packs.

I have been to the "city" part of Osaka (the one with a huge mall) and I loved it.

OSAKA: Huge mall is under-rating our beautiful shopping arcade. xD

FFIIIDS: and.. When I send letters to them, they don't send letters back to me.

All I can suggest is to try sending and receiving more letters between your DS'es. This is just a guess but maybe you have to have 7 letters in both your outbox and inbox. If that still don't work follow this guide (http://www.gamespot.com/ds/rpg/finalfantasyiii/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-31909347&pid=924897&page=0).

Good luck.

Question: Can I level my job multiple times in one battle? Right now I'm guarding for 7 turns then finishing the monsters up to job level once. Can I guard two or three times more to level two or three times?

As far as I know, you need to receive 7 letters from real people via close range-DS or WiFi; I don't know why it didn't work for Osaka. If you have WiFi, you can use my code which can be found a few posts back. If I were you, I would send 7 letters to an NPC, just in case.

Its under the category of "symbols", marked "_". Or I might be wrong but, I think, you can also use the R buttong for spacing.

i cant believe i missed out such an important word, what i meant to say was do i need to receive mail from 7 different people or just 7 mails from a real person

Lunay
January 6th, 2007, 03:53 PM
All 7 letters can be from the same person or 7 different people. I just noticed I made an error on my previous post: I meant to say PC, not NPC. And I found out that receiving letters does not do anything, you only need to send. So, you can spam me if you want. I got one letter from you by the way.

Soon I may have to use the Wifi Mail feature in Final Fantasy III DS, if I get my Wifi router and connection to work, but I'm still pretty early with FFIII DS though.

KEFKA!!!
Sorry, blacked out for a second when I saw that avatar... *Shudders at memories of Kefka*
Where'd you get that avatar Lacan? The playstation version of VI?
I loved this game, it was a pleasant challenge...
I found out though that our wireless gateway isn't compatible with my Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, so now I have to buy the Nintendo USB Router...
Where do I get $50, and fast? Without doing anything illegal... <_< >_> ^_^
