hi john.

other than domestic distributor sites, is there a site that lists boxset info for all anime titles? such as the number of different boxsets their distributors already released in the past and/or upcoming release dates of (or plans for) new titles or upgrades of boxsets to series that already have one (sometimes even two..) released?

for people who wait '"patiently" ;) for the release of boxsets, it sucks to find out down the road that a new, upgraded, and possibly less expensive one will be released in the near future when they just recently bought its older counterpart. maybe its just a marketing ploy fans can't do anything about but still, it sucks. so maybe if such a sites exists, it could give people peace of mind and not to mention less holes in their wallets as well as avoiding the feeling of missing out of on those ''upgraded sp. ED'' products.

animeondvd.com seems to be one of the better sites for dvd releases, but they aren't going to have any information before the licensor actually says they are going to release it. ADV has been the biggest pusher of box sets that are as cheap sometimes as 1-2 volumes of the dvd series, but they have recently anounced they won't release a box until like one year after a series has been released.

As already mentioned, AnimeOnDVD.com will be your best reference source for info about previously released and announced future release DVD sets.

ChibiBuddha, you bring up probably the most important issue pertaining to anime in America. To answer your question about what we can do, I think you should stay your course and continue to be "patient", and buy less. The reason re-releases are possible is often because the original sold enough, or the complete opposite that it didnt sell well at all and the company is just trying to cut their losses. Or in ADV's case with Evangelion, they release it almost yearly touting a now finally complete version because people wont stop buying it/they hid their liscences to maximize releases.

From my standpoint, the best way to stop this is to buy only what you really want very badly. That way, once the change in buying habits is recognized by distributors, they will be less able to continue their re-release habits, or even better will hopefully realize the consumer distaste in such a system.

Im with you, keep up the good fight, abstinence is the key!

However, it is also important to look at which distributors re-release more often. For example, never buy from ADV until they release their inevitible thinpak, Geneon also is picking up on thinpaks rapidly, so wait for them too. Funimation on the other hand doesnt appear to re-release as much as these other two examples, so they are a safer bet, especially since they also appear to release special editions from the get go.
