Hey guys,
I'm about to get a new computer, and I want to get a PC that I can sync up with my 360. I know that you can this with either a wifi connection (although $99 for the 360 wireless thing is ridiculous) or an ethernet cable.
My question though, is can this be done using XP, or just XP Media Center edition? I really would like to get XP Pro as opposed to media center.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Well, It might be different on the 360, but When I connect to my Xbox, I have to use an FTP Client like FlashFTP. You need a Crossover Cable, and if you want to connect to the internet at the same time as you are connected to your Xbox, you need two Network Cards. Hook up the Crossover Cable, and it MUST be an Cross Over cable, this is probably the most important part, as it will not work at all if its not. Then you need to get the IP Address from your Xbox. After you get it, open up the Network Card that your Xbox is atatched to. Go into Properties and change the IP From "Acquire Address Automatically" To "Use the Following IP Address" Input the IPAddress and DNS from your Xbox in there and save. Next, open up your FTP Client. For me, I used the Unleash X Dashboard to get the Password for my Xbox. Enter that into FlashFTP, For instance, mines, NAME: FULLMETAL PASS: ******* The connect to your Xbox. Now, this is ONLY For XBOX, as the 360 Cannot be Flased to allow for Modded Firmware. You cannot use the EXACT Same Method, but this is a general idea of what it would be like, as its basically the same thing.
Hope this Helps.

It is diffrent. 360 syncs with Windows Media Connect from the MS website. Its fast and easy. With XP pro you only share Pics and Music. With MCE you can share recorded Videos and I think you can use the TV tuner on the PC to show TV from the 360 but I dont fully know.

So essentially I have to put up with a sub-par OS (MCE) in order to stream downloaded video over to the 360? That totally sucks... :(

Windows Vista will be totally integrated with the xbox 360, Movie Maker 3 has formats for the xbox, Media Center (and Extender) built right in, and of course Windows Live Messenger is going to get the ability to send messages to Xbox Live users and voice chatting, im sure video support too
Well Movie Maker 3 is in Beta 2 which my knowledge is based on

MCE is no subpar OS it has stricter Driver standards thats about it.
Same Kernal at heart just more features.
I doubt most people here use the Features of Pro anyway.,

Ya but I want to move videos and stuff over to the 360 from the computer. Can you still do that with XP?

There's a hack that will allow you to stream video using XP, but it's supposed to be a pain in the butt. You'd need a copy of some MCE files to do it, but your main OS would remain XP.

It's not worth it anyway. The 360 can't play DivX or XviD, so what good it it? They may add those capabilities in an software liveupdate, but they also may not.

You can stream DivX and Xvid to the 360 with THIS (http://dl.qj.net/Transcode-360-Beta-3-Media-Tools-Xbox-360-Applications/pg/12/fid/6683/catid/337)
I stream my Fan-subs to my 360 then watch them on my 54 inch HDTV. :P

If I were you, I'd just hold off for vista if your getting a new computer, but instead of that wi fi adapter, get a wi fi bridge, those can go for like 60 to 70 dollars, and can support encryption

I use an original xbox as a media centre. Cheapest option, and it can hook up to an HDTV. Of course, it's component only, no HDMI

As far as I know, you can stream music/pics/vids using regular XP. You choose the files XP shares with the 360 using Media Connect,

That's exactly how I'm using mine ^_^. A VGA cable+KVM switch makes for a very convenient setup.
