I manage to get to chapter 4 *yes I've beaten the dreaded first boss somehow in Chapter 1, the rest of the bosses were easier I think*. Well anyway I got to the part where these black ninjas appear and I got my butt kicked and I have to start all over from the beginning again of Chapter 4.
Also I made the mistake of giving Muramasa my golden scrarabs because now I fear I screwed up my chance in unlocking Ninja Gaiden 1 with 50 scarabs and 2 and 3 later on.
BTW I'm playing the original Ninja Gaiden on normal mode. And yes this game is hard, harder then Devil May Cry 1 hard. In fact I remember Ninja Gaiden games on the NES being easier.
Also is there some tips for me to build up my essence so I can buy alot of stuff to prepare myself. Like areas with easy repawning enemies?

Upgrade the Dragon Sword to level 2 and use Flying Swallow (X + Y) on everything.

The only way to get the games is to give him the scrabs. The scrabs stack up, so there's no way of screwing your chances of getting the carts, as he awards you them.

the best advice i can give is to observe and recognize enemy movements and get good at counterattacks. keep blocking until you see a good opening and don't try to roll/dodge around too much w/o real reason, i kept ending up rolling into attacks. i played the game only once and beat it on hard difficulty and that's pretty much what got me through.
if all else fails, ABANDON SHIP! i won't think any less of you

Why does everyone say this game is so hard on normal mode? The ONLY hard boss was what's-her-name purple demon girl. And, like the first reply said, flying swallow owns everything.

Everybody has to start somewhere, and difficulty varies by person. I didn't find Alma particularly difficult, yet I had an incredibly hard time with the giant worms.
Anyways, just hop around like a rabbit. Be on the move constantly, especially with those Spider Black Ninja dudes. Those explosive darts deal massive damage. And yes, definitely upgrade your dragon sword to level 2 as soon as you can and master the flash attack. It's a quick blow and it's sometimes a one-hit-kill on a few enemies.
As for tips on building up essence? Everytime you encounter an area with bats, kill two of them with your shirukens and absorb their essence while charging an attack with the nunchakus (or Vigoorian Flails later, those are better). This will increase your attack and you'll kill the rest of the bats with the super combo, giving you greater essence. Rinse and repeat. Just leave the area and return. It's a good idea to have a few potions handy in case you get low on health.

Thanks for the tips guys, right now I'm using that move that Ryu dashes in the air and slices the enemies heads off. I found a nice Essence farming spot also.

I'm kinda confused if I were to give 40 scarabs for the healing armlet and then later another 10 will I still get the Ninja Gaiden 1 NES game?

Yes. He tallies them together every time you bring him them. So, your old amount still counts towards your next reward.
