View Full Version : Enomoto Daisuke - Space Tourist, Gundam Fan

I'm sure most people have heard of the "Space Tourists" (http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/10/14/0152224) - very rich people who pay Space Adventures money to set them up with a trip to Russia/Khazakstan for a vacation up to the wild blue yonder and beyond. So far, there have been three successful trips, two Americans and one South African.
The soon-to-be fourth one is a Japanese man, Enomoto Daisuke, a 35-year old who made his millions in the 1990s working for Livedoor, a Japanese ISP. He now does IT/ISP consulting work across Asia. Enomoto; however, is not your typical quirky millionaire. No, there's something more about him - like us, he's a Gundam fan. And Enomoto had a special request about going up into space - he wants to cosplay as none other than Major Char "The Red Comet" Aznable while he's up there. New Scientist Space Article About Him (http://www.newscientistspace.com/article/mg18825252.700.html)
According to this Yahoo UK article (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/14072006/323/japanese-nerd-endures-intense-training-space-dream.html) about himalso says he is going to assemble "a robot" (RX-78-2? MS-06S Zaku II?) in zero gravity and make the video available across the Internet.
Truly, this is probably one of my most geeky moments because I am extatic to get a hold of this and cannot wait for this to happen. Anyone else like me joining in the geek-fest?

While I've known about this man for a while(old thread) I like the looks of that Yahoo article.
Awesome. XP
Just a useless clarification of what it says though('cause what you said Suiko got me overly presumptuous. :P ), a robot "toy".
Still cool though.

Though, at first glance, there are a number of model kits that look like toys - the fact that Yahoo didn't specify anything other than robot, there's a very wide range of speculation.
Either way, I think it'll be great to get some video of "Char" in space.

I believe he said he would bring a model kit of the original MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type to build in space, but whether it's HG, MG, or PG remains to be seen. Still, I fully support the guy and am using this to further justify my love of Gundam to my parents ("Mom, if a millionaire dresses up as Char and builds his MS, certainly it's a good show!" XD).

If I were them, I'd see it as "Even a respectable man is embarassing himself in front of the whole planet because of this show. I really think that you should stop watching this." ;)

That is so cool ^_^ :D :P , what a brilliant idea. I can't wait to see the footage.

Personally, I think he'd go for a HG, an MG would be pushing it; but a PG in eight day's in Zero-G? doubtful
Edit: having said that, I was considering the time for paint aswell . LOL, who'd be stupid enough to use paint in zero-g...apparently me.

I'm not so sure.. those PG's might just be large enough to have a significant gravitational pull of their own..

If I were paying the amount these folks pay to go into space (something around 4 Mil USD, wasn't it?), I could care less what some Astronauts and Cosmonauts thought of me.

Too true. Though, I would probably assume a MG kit; I think I did mine somewhere around eight or nine hours (@9.8m/s^2), so doing a kit like that in 8 days in 0Gmight not be too much of an issue once he gets used to it. MGs are a good balance of size, detail, and economy, too when comparing against HG or PG kits.

I read about this elsewhere a while ago, didn't even notice this thread. Anyway, this guy has my full support. As a Gundam and Char fan and as a person who just loves space in general.

I can't wait for this^_^ I wonder how much it will get noticed in the US. Maybe it will even be made into a few jokes on a late night show:P

"He is being taken off that flight for medical reasons"
They say he could fly some other time though, so theres still hope.

Yeah, Greg Olsen failed his first physical at 60 but then passed a second one and was still able to go.

Still if he ever gets up there, I'd love to see him a model kit in Space. Ooooh, I hope it is a master grade or version Katoki.

I'm sure he'd build just a 1/144 HG. MG's take me a few hours to build & that doesn't even include all the details like painting. 1/144 are really fast & easy build however.

He's scheduled to be up in 0G for 8 Days. It's not like it takes that long to build one...

Well I mean, does he plan to video record himself building a model to show viewers? Thats what I expected because it would be interesting for him to show. But watching him build a model that takes anywhere from an hour or more would be rather long to watch. But watching him build a 1/144 HG fast in maybe 15 minutes makes more sense.
I don't know.

You know, you're all assuming he's only going to build one model. At 1/144 scale, in 8 days, he could build all of chars mobile suits and release them all as seperate videos.

Well, you won't have to ponder that anymore.

How totally and utterly disappointing.
But maybe Daisuke'll end up like that other man mentioned in the end of the article and have another checkup at a later date.
