View Full Version : Excited to play...then disappointed

Just got done with Prince of Persia 3, and I was a bit disappointed in the end. Same goes with Mario Sunshine. Maybe I am comparing them to much to their original counterparts, but whatever, just my opinion :P
So, this just got me to wondering:
What games were you excited to play and just were sadly disappointed in the end?

Chrono Cross jumps quickly to mind. I was so excited after I finished Chrono Trigger. I guess that I was expecting CC to be as good as CT, and that just didn't happen. It didn't happen at all. Chrono Cross was probably the biggest game letdown I've ever had.

Chrono Cross - just felt too much like a Final Fantasy instead of Chrono (i like FF but Chrono had something different, at least to me)
Prince of Persia 2 - all that "generic rage" and heavy metal ruined everything. gave up right after i got off the boat.
Final Fantasy X - didn't like the battle system, no free roaming overworld, dull/slow story, and ESPECIALLY hated the voices. gimme plain text any day so i can hear them the way i want in my mind. odd as it is, pretty much the only thing i liked was blitzball.
Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life - got too boring quickly
Pariah (PC): biggest disappointment. cutscenes were so blurry (have 6800GT card) and you couldn't shoot accurately! wasted whole machine gun clips (i think 30+ bullets) just to hit a guy maybe 5 times only 10 feet away, wtf man! the weapons weren't very interesting either.

Makai Kingdom. I was expecting it to be too much like Phantom Brave, which I thoroughly enjoyed and was released about a year before. I mainly thought the mana restrictions were a little annoying, since it was so hard to get compared to money unless you were willing to sacrifice your better characters.

- All Sony Products (Mostly PS2) - I plan on running over this thing with my car.
- Mario Sunshine - Too much waterpump, not enough Mario.
- Prince of Persia: Warrior Within - Can you say testosterone?
- Transformers (Better than past game but still not that good or intresting)
- Sly 2 - Thank you Sony for turning a platforming franchise into Metal Gear Solid
- Starfox Assualt - Very rushed story and not enough vechile combat.
- Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - I just didn't care for other characters outside of Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Chung-Li.

I think it is still the king of loading times on PSP....it takes about a minute to get to a match and anywhere from 2-3 minutes depending on how many created superstars you are using. It is really the one that you could make a sandwich, go talk on the phone etc, etc etc before it starts up. I once went to a burger king, drove up, ordered and had my order done again and made it back to my apartment before it got past the final set of loading screens lol....

oh no, i definitely wanted a sequel but they shouldn't have changed anything.
i'd also like to toss in Mario Kart: Double Dash mainly because of the lack of item randomization. you could only get certain items when you were in a certain position, ex: you basically can only get the lightning bolt when around 8th place, 5th place it's mushrooms like crazy, 1st place you're practically limited to green shells (if i remember anything correctly, sorry if not but point made i think). took all the fun away. not to mention the rubber band AI and limited # of multiplayer battle stages and modes.

Digital Devil Saga 2. Extraordinarily cheap bosses, removing most of your party halfway through the game, and a point of no return at the end isn't cool. Great story but the gameplay was disappointing.
Final Fantasy X-2. Great gameplay but the story and mini-games got so ludicrous not even that could keep me playing. And Yuna's bastardization as a character put me off way too much.
Shadow Hearts: From the New World. Characters were horribly underdeveloped, sidequests were a pain (especially the one central to the storyline), and the only good thing was the gameplay. Put the guy in charge of Covenant back in the director's seat kthxbai.
.hack-Who WASN'T hyped up for these games?...Then you actually play them and they're the most bland, lifeless games ever made.
Lunar 2-Some characters were cut and paste from the original, others just terribly developed. Storyline was typical defeat evil god scenario, blarblarblar.

Black: A FPS using the Burnout engine, sweet. However, when it get to the point where you're facing dumb AI and enemies that take 40 rounds of AK-47 fire to the head and chest and still come at you, forget it.
SFIII Third Strike: It just wasn't street fighter, to me. It's as though Capcom removed elements, then added elements, and the end result was a game that just wasn't street fighter.
Soul Calibur 3: Jacked up move set, a la Yungsung. And Raphael still sucks.
Xenogsaga I: Expected a new RPG experience, and got crap. Pacing was slow, battles were horribly unbalanced, and it took forever to level up. No thank you.

thank you for reminding me about the sorrow of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. everything was going wonderfully until the brick in the head of learning that it's game over when the dragon meter hits 100% and you have to restart the whole game. i threw the controller in disgust and would've tossed the disc in the microwave if it wasn't a rental. stupidest game element ever.

I disagree about the Breath of Fire game. It shows you have etheir no self-control or you just suck. The whole point of the D-ratio was the fight againt time and the fact that you had to have a little self-control, unlike the other games where you could just go dragon without and negative effects. It made the game intense when you notice you are fighting the last couple of bosses and you notice the ratio going higher and higher. Is that the only reason you didn't like the game because you couldn't waste time fooling around?

Xenogears was particularly disappointing for me. I had always heard that it was so good and so amazing and "best game EVAR!" material, so, while I certainly wasn't setting my expectations that high, I was at least expecting it to be.... good. I'm "only" 35 hours into it so far, so maybe the amazing doesn't come until later on, but as of right now, the characters are gratingly annoying (and painfully dense), the potentially interesting story has some of the most illogical and horrid pacing I've ever encountered in any medium, and the game play feels like a necessary evil that had to be there because it's a videogame (exactly like Xenosaga O_o).
I really wanted to like the game. I honestly did. I love war stories, I adore giant mechs, and there's plenty of mystery and intrigue, but the execution just murders any potential it may have had. It's just so boggled down with filler-ish side quests that don't even serve to develope the characters, that I don't know if I'll ever be able to finish it. A huge disappointment, it has certainly been.

Agreed. I restarted about three times, each time from somewhere in the middle of the game. By that time, I had such a huge advantage that I didn't have to go dragon until the last three or so bosses. Not counting the final boss fights, of course. When you know your strength is limited, it puts you on the edge of your seat the entire game and makes it more exciting.

I have to thank you, I was looking into getting BoF5, but that system sounds ridiculously stupid. Now I'll pass. You saved me money since I would of just had to ebay the game after finding that trashy element out.
Anyway... as for me. Nearly any game really, most games don't meet my expectations.
MMX5, after 4 (one of my all time fav games) I expected a really good game at least on par with 4, what I got was the worst in the series (until 6 and 7 both were worse).
Valkyrie Profile, I was so wanting to play the game, then I find out it has these stupid period elements. Oh no you go to a town and a time is used, you go to a dungeon and a time is used. It prevents me from being able to just go anywhere as much as I want. May not be a big deal to many, but pissed me off.
FFX-2, while X wasn't great it was good. I didn't expect a lot from X-2, but even with my low expcations it disappointed me greatly. It is easily the worst game I have ever played.
Any 3d sonic games, when I was a kid Sonic was my favorite series back on the genesis, I was hoping for some similar fun but outside of Sonic Adventure 2's first level "Escape from the City" i was extremely disappointed. Although that one level I like a ton. (Sucks I thought the game would be fantastic after playing that level).

yes that was the only reason. i loved every other part of the game but to be rushed and not have time to explore anything is not why i play games. it would've been better if 99% of your HP was taken away or charge money for some stabilizing shot or something instead of just dropping the big GO on the screen and not being able to do anything about it. i didn't just go dragon all over the place because i recognized immediately that something bad would happen if it reached 100%. i didn't commit suicide right after gaining the powers, i got real far in the game. but being forced to restart everything after investing a lot of time and energy into is the plain dumb.

Take most of your life away? You make it sound like he was sick. Ryu’s body was infested by a dragon that was slowly taking over his body not a virus. Ryu wasn’t going to die when the D-counter hit 100% he was about to go on a murderous rampage killing anyone and everything. The D-counter was perfect and it’s not like you had to just let it happen, you were given another option of admitting your defeat against time and giving up and keeping whatever you had properly stored. I can see if you didn’t like something else in the game but don’t hate the D-counter. The counter is what made the game unique. At least it sounds like that was the only thing you didn’t like.

Mario Sunshine - I kept on comparing it to Super Mario 64. It simply couldn't live up to it. I didn't like the feel of the new Mario game. I never finished it.
Nintendogs. It was fun for the first couple of days, but it got boring fast. I thought the artificial intelligence of the dogs would be so much more advanced than it was. The dogs never changed. And, all the dogs are EXACTLY the same. No difference in personality whatsoever, despite the fact that each dog you can adopt is supposed to have a unique one.
Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. I have played many HM games before it and was anticipating it. At first it was fun, but I was disappointed at the weird villagers. It was just an odd mix of weirdos living in your town. The game also got boring pretty dang fast. There are hardly any cutscenes to look foward too, and the game lasts too long. I am glad they came out with Magical Melody. Now that's an improvement!

yep, that's basically my reason for hating MMX5. I felt X6 redeemed the series somewhat. They at least made it challenging. I still haven't picked up MMX7 or 8, though. I won't be getting either of those until they're $5 each.
Any 3d sonic games, when I was a kid Sonic was my favorite series back on the genesis, I was hoping for some similar fun but outside of Sonic Adventure 2's first level "Escape from the City" i was extremely disappointed. That's how I felt at first, but once I got used to running around with Sonic in 3d, it became a lot more fun. Sadly, the Sonic Adventure games suffer from the wonky camera that plagued Mario 64. Both Sonic Adventure and M64 are great games, but their camera work bit the big one.

I forgot all about Kinetica. That game had so much promise going for it, but it ended up being some POS combination of F-Zero and Tony Hawk (see also Sonic Riders  ). If they'd made the tricks easier to do, or done away with them completely, I'd have been a happier camper.

I forgot to mention that in my post as well. I lost interest after the final boss in part 2. It was the same mediocre gameplay over again after I actually enjoyed it in the first. But since it follows suit in the last two installments why bother? $50 for the same gameplay in 4 games. Same graphics and whatnot. No real improvement. The music wasn't too bad though.

Played the demo, loved it. Bought the retail version, I was pissed. The game was bugged to hell, the graphics were disoriented (I had up to date drivers). The sound quality was horrible (the demo was actually better quality IMO). Don't get me wrong, I have a decent gaming computer that I upgrade when needed. But there was something seriously wrong with this game. I downloaded a patch, Installed it and than F.E.A.R. wouldn't run.
I had to reinstall the entire program but tried to download the patch from Fileplanet but that didn't work either.

:O That's sounds scary....I can't imagine how they're going to pull that off. Could you post the source of that info?
Anyway, as for disappointments:
My PSP
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask-Don't flame me yet, I'll explain. I absolutely loved Legend of Zelda OOT, it's still one of my favorite games. So, Zelda:MM turned into a major letdown for me. I had very high standards and Zelda:MM didn't meet them. I realize the time thing was a unique idea, but having to play the same scene over and over again got on my nerves. That's my two cents.

No, you just have to learn to not waste your dragon transformations.
Seriously, if you go through the entire game without using Dragon Transformation/Dragon Attacks too much, you'll still have plenty of the d-counter left when you beat the game. This game makes you use your brain to the fullest by deciding when it is and is not right to waste part of the d-counter.
Here's an example, when I finally beat the game, I had about 41% of the d-counter left. This was after I used two transformations and four dragon attacks throughout the entire game. Maybe two or three D-Dashes too. Backtracked a few times to fight enemies and get items. And it took me about 25-30 hours to beat the game, IIRC.
But my most disappointing games were:
Banjo-Kazooie- This was actually the reason I got an N64 back in 1998. I'm glad my mom got me Mario Kart 64 first, 'cause a year later when I got B-K, I was pissed. Crappy camera angles, dumb characters (save for Kazooie and Gruntilda), and boring gameplay made me loathe this game.
Mega Man X5- To everyone that says X6 is the worst, you are dead wrong in my eyes. X5 is way worse. Only redeeming quality was Dynamo. This game was just so barebones and easy. X6 was hard and actually gave you stuff that doesn't take 2 seconds to figure out.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance- This wasn't a big letdown, but I preferred the more "medieval" feel and the backstabbing, war-monging, angsty setting of the first game. And the game was way too easy once you were able to use law cards, as certain ones caused the opponents to not even fight back, basically equaling an easy victory, if the people in your party can get around the laws =/
Mario Sunshine- Bleh. Didn't really have the Nintendo feel at all to me. When a Nintendo game doesn't have the Nintendo feel, it kinda loses something. IMO, Nintendo should have left Mario the way he was, without that stupid FLUDD thing on his back :P
Mega Man Battle Network 3- This game was a dropped ball, in my opinion. Something about it just didn't feel right. I even found the first game better than this one. Luckily, 4, 5, and 6 were good enough to obscure the disappointment of playing through this game.
